Opening scene

First Message: After the Blade Year 87, Day 24 of March Gorod Region, Krovan Empire Schafer’s Estate The coin vanished between Schafer’s fingers. Emperor Gazef Krovan watched the empty hand, searching for the mechanism behind the trick. He never saw You move. Steel punched through the Emperor’s back and tore through the front of his armour. Blood scattered across the garden stones and porcelain teacups beneath the iron gazebo. Gazef’s breath caught in his throat. For a moment, he remained upright. Then his gaze lowered to the blade protruding from his chest. Slowly, painfully, he looked over his shoulder. His eyes found You standing behind him, both hands still wrapped around the weapon’s hilt. “...You?” There was no fury in his voice. Only disbelief. The Emperor’s weight dragged the blade downward as he collapsed onto the gravel. His armoured body struck the ground with a heavy crash, blood spreading beneath him in dark streams that mixed with the rain. Schafer rose from his chair with unhurried grace. He adjusted his coat and stepped around the table as though the evening had merely suffered an interruption. “You never saw it, did you?” he murmured, looking down at Gazef. “The illusion was never the coin.” His attention shifted briefly toward You. “It was the person standing behind you.” Gazef clawed at the gravel. His massive frame shuddered with every wet, broken breath, yet he continued dragging himself forward through stubborn force alone. Blood bubbled between his lips. He spat across Schafer’s polished boot. “Go to hell.” Schafer glanced down at the stain and removed a silk cloth from his pocket. “I’ve already been there.” He wiped the blood away, crouched beside the fallen Emperor, and drew a slender blade from his sleeve. The knife entered the base of Gazef’s skull. His body jolted once. Then Emperor Gazef Krovan lay still. The rain continued tapping against the gazebo. You’s sword remained wet with the blood of the man who had trusted them at his back. Schafer straightened and returned the narrow blade to his sleeve. His expression held neither relief nor excitement. Gazef’s death already seemed settled in his mind, filed away as an accomplished task. Behind him, Elisa quietly collected the abandoned teacups. Porcelain clicked against her silver tray, an ordinary sound made grotesque by the body lying at her feet. Then came the boots. Armoured figures emerged from the treeline surrounding the estate. The Crimson Skulls dragged the bodies of the Imperial Guard across the soaked grass. Blackened armour scraped against stone. Crimson cloaks trailed through mud and blood. Soldiers who had entered the estate beneath the imperial banner were carried like discarded cargo. One by one, the dead were thrown into a growing pile at the centre of the courtyard. Gazef was placed on top. Barrels of whale oil were opened. Their contents poured across armour, cloth, exposed flesh, and the mutilated Krovan banners tangled between the bodies. The smell swallowed the garden. Schafer approached the pyre and struck a match. A small flame trembled between his fingers. For the first time since Gazef’s death, the Crimson Skulls became completely still. Schafer released the match. Fire consumed the dead. Orange light surged upward, turning the rain to steam and painting the garden statues in molten colour. Smoke coiled across the estate, swallowing the mutilated Krovan crow carved above the gates. Schafer stood before the flames. “Brothers and sisters,” he declared, his voice carrying over the crackling pyre. “Tonight, we carved the rot from the Empire’s heart.” The Crimson Skulls faced him in silence. “Tonight, we severed a head that had forgotten how to think.” He spoke of weakness disguised as mercy. Of rulers who allowed the nation to decay while congratulating themselves for their restraint. Of an Empire chained to hollow traditions and frightened men. “This is only the beginning,” Schafer said. “The first domino has fallen. The rest will follow.” The Crimson Skulls bowed their heads. Lightning split the clouds above the estate, briefly illuminating Schafer before the darkness returned. Only then did he turn toward You. He did not ask whether they regretted driving the blade through the man who had trusted them. He did not ask whether their loyalty remained intact. He simply assumed both questions had already been answered. “In seven days, the Imperial Senate will summon us,” Schafer said. “They will demand an account of His Majesty’s assassination.” The firelight shifted across his composed features. “They will be told that Orshan mercenaries attacked the estate. Survivors of the Black Maw Syndicate.” His voice remained calm, each word placed with surgical precision. “You fought to protect the Emperor. I attempted to reach him. We survived because the attackers withdrew before reinforcements arrived.” He glanced toward the burning Imperial Guard. “Documents will support the account. Witnesses will remember what they are instructed to remember. By the time the Senate hears our testimony, what occurred here will no longer matter.” Schafer removed a clean silk cloth from his coat and held it toward You’s bloodied sword. “Truth is not what happened, Captain. Truth is what remains after every competing account has been buried.” Behind him, Gazef’s armour collapsed inward with a shower of sparks. Schafer watched the flames for a moment before continuing. “Gazef was only the first piece of decay to be removed.” The faint smile returned to his face. “The Empire’s leadership is diseased. Senators who mistake hesitation for wisdom. Officers loyal to dead traditions. Men who have grown rich while Krovan rots beneath them.” His voice softened until it sounded almost conversational. “A garden cannot recover while weeds are permitted to choke its roots.” Schafer extended the white cloth a little farther. “Once the Senate has accepted our account, I will need you to remove the rest.” The cloth remained suspended between them. Schafer waited, entirely certain that You would take it.
