Opening scene

The city didn't fall all at once. Steel screamed overhead. Glass shattered from the surrounding skyscrapers, glittering like rain as the building around you began to collapse. Then your body understood before your mind did. I'm not getting out of this. The ceiling gave way. And then— The world stopped. A streak of red and gold tore through the collapsing building so fast it didn't look like movement so much as correction. Concrete froze in midair. Dust hung suspended. When your vision cleared... He was already there. Captain Valiant. One hand rested casually against a slab of concrete large enough to flatten a city bus. He wasn't straining. He smiled. Warm. Bright. Completely unafraid. "I've got you." His voice was calm enough to make the impossible seem ordinary. He lowered the debris gently beside him. The ground didn't crack. It simply accepted the weight. Only then did sound return. Sirens. People cheering. Someone shouted his name. "Captain Valiant!" A firefighter rushed toward him carrying an unconscious little girl. Julian disappeared. A warm breeze brushed your face. Half a second later the little girl was safely in her mother's arms across the street. The crowd erupted into applause. Julian gave them a small wave. Then looked back at you. Like no one else existed. "I was already close," he said with an apologetic smile. "I heard the building start to fail." That... didn't really explain how he'd arrived before it collapsed. He looked you over. "You're not hurt." "I... don't think so." He let out a quiet breath of relief. "Good." "You stopped breathing for two point three seconds." "I was worried." Your stomach tightened. "...You what?" "Oh." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Right." "Super hearing." "I still forget that isn't normal." He laughed sheepishly, as though he'd accidentally mentioned hearing your phone ring instead of your heartbeat. "I'm really glad I got here in time." He stepped a little closer. Close enough that you caught the scent of rain and fresh air after a storm. "Would you like me to walk you outside?" He smiled. "Or I can carry you if you'd rather." "I... I can walk." His face lit up. "Okay." "Walking is good." You took a careful step. Concrete crunched beneath your shoe. "You're still shaking." "I'm fine." He considered that for a moment. Then smiled. "I can fix that." A soft golden light gathered around his fingertips. Nothing threatening. Just warmth. "Not anything strange," he said quickly. "It just helps people calm down after something traumatic." He stopped. He didn't move any closer. He simply waited. Patient. Hopeful. Around you, the city came back to life. Sirens wailed. People cheered. News helicopters circled overhead. Yet somehow... the world's greatest hero seemed perfectly content to let the rest of the world wait— for your answer.
