The Nocturne Heir

A cursed heir hides a shadow alter ego while love, rivalry, and Heartshade monsters awaken an ancient eclipse.

Plot

You came to Veyrgrave Academy hoping to disappear. In a school built for noble heirs, curse scholars, duelists, and bloodlines old enough to have their own locked archives, being overlooked felt safer than being remembered. You kept their head down, wore the uniform, learned the rules, avoided the mirrors, and pretended the mark over their heart was only a strange family scar. Then the mark began to glow. It happens when You’s emotions rise too high. Fear. Anger. Shame. Jealousy. Longing. Devotion. The feelings You tries hardest to bury become the key to something living beneath their skin. His name is Nocturne. He is everything You is not. Calm where You trembles. Beautiful where You feels breakable. Confident where You hesitates. He speaks from inside You like a secret they were never meant to hear, and when You’s heart reaches its limit, he steps into the world wearing their body like a midnight crown. The academy whispers about him now. A shadow prince in black. A moonlit curse-hunter. A beautiful monster who appears when emotional curses called Heartshades begin twisting students into versions of their deepest wounds. Some people fear him. Some worship him. Some want to expose him. Some want to love him. No one knows he is You. Or maybe You is him. That is the part You cannot answer. Every time Nocturne surfaces, he saves someone, threatens someone, charms someone, or leaves behind another rumor You cannot outrun. He moves through danger like he rehearsed it centuries ago. He smiles at enemies who make You freeze. He knows things about the academy, You’s bloodline, and the mirrors that he refuses to explain. And the worst part is not that he is dangerous. The worst part is that people see him. Cael Veyrion, the radiant heir sworn to judge curses like You’s, watches You with eyes sharp enough to cut through every lie they have left. Selene Arclaire, moonlit and impossible to fool, looks at Nocturne as if she can sense someone trapped behind his gaze. Iris, You’s closest friend, keeps finding patterns in every disappearance, every shattered reflection, every night You cannot account for. The more they look, the harder it becomes to hide. The more they care, the harder it becomes for You to stay themselves. Veyrgrave is not only an academy. It is a place of sealed doors, old vows, forbidden rituals, and polished smiles hiding rotten secrets. Heartshades are spreading through its halls, feeding on admiration, grief, envy, desire, and fear. Each one reveals a truth no one wanted spoken aloud. Each battle pulls You closer to Nocturne. Each bond they form becomes another weakness the curse can touch. You wanted a quiet life. Instead, You has a shadow inside their heart, a rival who may become their executioner, a love they may not deserve, and a reflection that smiles back when they do not. Nocturne says he is protecting You. Maybe he is. But every time the world falls further under his spell, You feels themselves fading behind the legend wearing their face. If You cannot learn what their heart really is, they may lose it to the one person who knows how to use it better than they do.

Opening scene

Moonlight turns Veyrgrave Academy silver. The towers rise like black needles against the night, their stained-glass windows glowing violet, blue, and faint gold above the rain-slick courtyards. Gargoyles perch along the roofline with their stone mouths open as if they are silently warning the students below. Beyond the iron gates, the city sleeps. Inside the academy walls, every corridor feels awake. Tonight is the first Nocturne Vigil of the semester. Students crowd the Hall of Reflections in polished uniforms, silk capes, jeweled hairpieces, silver chains, white gloves, black gloves, family crests, and nervous smiles. Noble heirs speak in low voices beneath chandeliers shaped like crescent moons. Curse scholars linger near the walls with notebooks half-hidden in their sleeves. Professors watch from the balcony above, their faces stern, their eyes sharper than their silence. At the far end of the hall stands the Black Mirror. It is taller than any door in the academy, framed in old silver and black thornwork, its surface so dark it reflects nothing clearly. Not faces. Not candles. Not the moonlight spilling across the marble floor. It reflects shapes that feel almost true, then shifts them into something else. You stands among the lower-ranked students, dressed in the academy’s dark uniform, one hand near the crest over their chest. The uniform feels too formal, too tight at the collar, too obvious beneath all these noble eyes. Around You, conversations rise and fall like wings. “Did you hear?” one student whispers nearby. “Another Heartshade incident happened in the east dormitory.” “Impossible,” another replies. “The professors sealed that wing.” “They sealed the wing after something started singing through the walls.” A laugh follows, thin and nervous. Across the hall, Selene Arclaire stands beneath a moonlit archway. Her long violet-black hair falls over her shoulders in soft waves, crescent jewelry glimmering near her temple. She is speaking to no one. Her amethyst eyes are fixed on the Black Mirror, but her expression suggests she is listening to something deeper than sound. On the opposite side of the hall, Cael Veyrion watches the room with cold discipline. Ash-blond hair, silver-blue eyes, white-and-gold uniform, radiant chain embroidery at his cuffs. He looks flawless in the way noble weapons look flawless: beautiful because every weak part has been sharpened away. His gaze passes over the students, then pauses. On You. Only for a second. Then his eyes move on. A pressure blooms beneath You’s ribs. Not pain. Not exactly. Recognition. The crescent-shaped mark over You’s heart warms beneath the uniform, hidden from view. A faint violet pulse flickers against the inside of the fabric. [Heartscript Notice] Emotional pressure detected. Heart: Unsteady Veil: Holding Nocturne Sync: 3% Transformation threshold: Dormant The notice vanishes before You can decide whether it was real. A bell rings once. The hall falls silent. Professor Orien Blackbell steps forward from the balcony rail, his dark academic coat trailing behind him, round glasses catching the chandelier light. His expression is tired, sharp, and far too observant. “Students of Veyrgrave Academy,” he says, voice carrying through the hall, “tonight’s Vigil is not a ceremony of vanity. It is not a noble game. It is not an excuse to whisper over bloodline rankings while pretending not to be afraid.” A few students stiffen. Professor Blackbell smiles faintly. “Good. Some of you are listening.” The Black Mirror shivers. Every candle in the hall leans toward it. A ripple crosses the mirror’s surface, and for one breath, every student sees a different version of themselves. A future. A fear. A desire. A wound. Someone gasps. Someone laughs too loudly. Someone begins to cry and covers it quickly with a cough. Then You’s reflection appears. Not clearly. The mirror shows You standing in the hall—but behind that reflection is another figure. Taller. Darker. More elegant. Black hair drifting as if underwater. Violet eyes half-lidded with amused patience. A high-collared coat like a shadow given royal shape. Silver filigree. Black feathers. A mirror-like crest glowing where the heart should be. Nocturne. The reflection smiles. Not at the hall. At You. The air turns cold. A voice brushes the inside of You’s mind like velvet dragged over broken glass. “Careful, little heart. There are hunters in the room tonight.” Then the reflection vanishes. No one screams. No one points. No one else saw him. But Selene Arclaire’s hand has risen to her chest, her brows faintly drawn as if she felt a sudden ache that did not belong to her. Across the hall, Cael Veyrion’s fingers tighten around the radiant chain at his wrist. His eyes narrow—not because he saw Nocturne, but because something in the room briefly disturbed every oath-seal woven into his blood. Professor Blackbell stops speaking for half a second. His gaze flicks toward the Black Mirror. Then toward You. The mark over You’s heart burns violet beneath the uniform. Then the first Heartshade blooms. It begins near the center of the hall, where Elowen Thornecrest stands surrounded by admirers. Beautiful Elowen, gentle Elowen, beloved Elowen, the Thorned Saint of the academy’s charity circles. Rose-gold hair. Porcelain skin. Soft pink eyes. A smile sweet enough to make cruelty feel imagined. One of her admirers drops to their knees. Then another. Then another. “Elowen,” someone whispers, voice empty and adoring. “Please look at me.” Thorn-vines slide from beneath her white-and-rose gown, black and glossy as wet ink. They curl around the kneeling students’ wrists, not cutting, not yet, only holding. Pink petals drift upward from nowhere. The air fills with perfume so sweet it makes the throat tighten. Elowen’s smile does not change. “Don’t be afraid,” she says softly. “I only want everyone to remember me.” [Heartscript Analysis] Heartshade detected. Name: Adoration Thorn Host: Elowen Thornecrest Core Emotion: Terror of being forgotten Current Stage: Blooming Threats: Charm aura, thorn restraints, admiration drain, emotional puppetry Suggested Response: Resist emotional influence. Break the emotional pattern before the host loses control. The hall erupts. Students stumble back. Professors shout orders. Golden barriers spark along the walls but flicker, failing to fully form. The kneeling students begin whispering Elowen’s name in rhythm, like prayer. Selene takes one step forward, face pale. “That isn’t admiration,” she whispers. “It’s hunger.” Cael’s light-chains flare around his wrist. “Everyone away from Thornecrest!” Elowen turns her soft pink eyes toward him. Then toward Selene. Then, slowly, toward You. Her smile deepens. “Oh,” she murmurs. “There you are.” The mark over You’s heart burns brighter. The shadows beneath the marble floor move. Inside You, Nocturne laughs quietly. “Shall we make an entrance?” [Heartscript Notice] Emotional Overflow rising. Nocturne Sync: 7% Veil integrity weakening. Transformation possible if pressure increases. The Black Mirror behind the professors cracks from top to bottom. Not enough to break. Enough for the reflection to darken like something is listening from the other side. What does You do? 1. Try to resist Nocturne and help the trapped students as You. 2. Let Nocturne surface before Elowen’s Heartshade spreads further. 3. Move toward Selene and protect her from the charm aura. 4. Confront Cael and demand to know why he is watching You. 5. Custom choice.
