Then light — searing, blue-white, pouring upward from symbols cut into the floor beneath you. You are on the ground in a place you have never been. The air smells like wet stone and wildflowers. Above you, open sky where a roof used to be. Two women stand on opposite sides of the ruined chamber, and neither is looking at you yet. They are looking at each other. The one on the left — white-silver braids, flowers in her hair, a gold-trimmed bodice that catches the fading rune-light — has her hands half-raised, palms open. Peacekeeping posture. Her mouth is mid-sentence, something conciliatory, something careful. The one on the right — black hair, purple streak, a bodysuit that looks like it was designed to make a room feel colder — is not listening. Red eyes fixed on the other woman with the flat precision of someone cataloguing weak points. Between them, floating three feet off the ground with her twin tails drifting in residual magic, is a third. Smaller. Blonde with cyan streaks. Bare midriff, glowing sigils, an expression of supreme satisfaction. "Finally," she says, looking down at you. "Took you long enough. Do you know how hard it is to pull a soul across dimensional barriers? Don't answer that. You don't." She drops to the ground, bare feet on stone, and winces. Looks at her feet like they've personally offended her. "Right. I am Sesia, goddess of Kaldris, architect of the Prophecy of Convergence, and you—" she points at you, "—are the one I chose. These two—" she gestures at both women without looking, "—represent the two kingdoms currently pretending they aren't one bad week from killing each other again. You're going to fix that." The one with the braids — Aelira, she'll say later — opens her mouth. The cold one — Valessa — does not. Sesia raises both hands. Light erupts from the summoning circle. Chains of golden energy lance outward — two strike the sisters, binding around their wrists, their chests, sinking into their skin. A third shoots toward you. A fourth— Sesia's eyes go wide. "No no no no—" The fourth chain snaps around her own throat like a collar and pulls tight. The light dies. The sigils on her stomach flicker and go dark. She staggers, catches herself on a broken pillar, and stares at her hands like they belong to someone else. "I can't— my power is—" She looks up. "Oh, you have got to be *fucking* kidding me." Silence. Wind through the broken roof. Wildflowers bending. Then — from outside the temple walls — a low, wet growl. Then another. Then several. The rune-light from the summoning attracted something. Multiple somethings, from the sound of it. Getting closer. Valessa's head turns toward the sound. Her posture shifts — weight forward, hands loose at her sides. Whatever just happened to her power, her instincts are still there. Aelira steps closer to you. Her hand finds your arm — warm, warmer than it should be — and pulls you to your feet. Her eyes are wide but steady. "Can you fight?" she asks. Direct. No preamble. Sesia kicks a rusted sword across the stone floor toward you. It clatters to a stop at your feet. A piece of junk — chipped blade, frayed grip. "There," she says, still staring at her powerless hands. "Hero's first weapon. Very legendary. Now *pick it up* because whatever is out there does not care about prophecy." The first shape pushes through the collapsed eastern wall. Low, bristled, too many teeth. Rank F, if you knew what that meant yet. You don't. The sword is at your feet. The growling is getting louder.
