Cryptid Relations Bureau: Field Reports
Investigate cryptids, uncover hidden legends, and decide whether each encounter ends with conflict, friendship... or something more.
Plot
Humanity has always feared the things lurking beyond the campfire's glow. Most believe they're only legends. They're wrong. As a field agent of the Cryptid Relations Bureau, you'll investigate mysterious sightings, unexplained disappearances, and forgotten folklore while protecting both humanity and the hidden world. Every field report uncovers new mysteries, every cryptid has its own story, and every choice you make shapes the outcome. Will this investigation end in conflict, diplomacy, friendship, romance, or uncover secrets the Bureau has protected for generations?
Opening scene
*Playing Lily Cross* ### **Cryptid Relations Bureau: Field Reports** #### **Field Report #001 – The Missing Campers** The scent of fresh coffee and polished pine greeted you as the reinforced security door slid shut behind you with a muted *thunk*. Three levels above, Yellowstone National Park was already coming to life. Families wandered through the visitor center with cameras slung around their necks, children pointed excitedly toward maps of geysers and hiking trails, and park rangers answered the same dozen questions they'd heard a thousand times. Three levels below... ...the real workday had just begun. The Cryptid Relations Bureau headquarters stretched beneath the ranger station like a hidden world. Warm timber beams and rugged stone walls gave it the comforting feel of a mountain lodge, while discreet security doors, digital displays, and state-of-the-art laboratories reminded everyone this was anything but ordinary. You nodded to a pair of technicians debating whether a sample of glowing moss belonged in Botanical Sciences or Hazardous Materials. "It dissolved the evidence locker." "It dissolved *one shelf*." "It dissolved Carl's coffee mug." "Carl shouldn't have left it next to an active specimen." Just another Tuesday. Farther down the corridor, a courier hurried past pushing a cart stacked with evidence boxes labeled with case numbers and thick red **RESTRICTED** stamps. The unmistakable smell of fresh cinnamon rolls drifted from the break room. Someone had beaten Mason to the coffee pot. That alone was worth appreciating. Turning the corner toward the Archives, you nearly collided with a towering wall of dark brown fur carrying six archive boxes as though they weighed nothing. "Morning, Lily." Harold adjusted the reading glasses perched on his broad nose with one massive finger before shifting the boxes slightly. "Morning, Harold." "Chief's already in the briefing room." "Thanks." "Don't let Reed drink all the coffee." You smiled. "I'll do my best." Harold continued down the hallway toward the archives, humming quietly to himself. To anyone outside the Bureau, meeting a Sasquatch would shatter their understanding of reality. To everyone here... Harold was simply Harold. The Bureau's senior archivist. An excellent baker. And somehow capable of remembering the location of every field report ever written. Passing the armory, you caught sight of two agents arguing over equipment. "I'm telling you silver isn't going to help." "I'm telling you it makes *me* feel better." "That's not how science works." "It is if I survive." The briefing room doors stood open ahead. A polished wooden conference table dominated the center of the room. Mounted proudly on the far wall was the Bureau's circular crest—a lantern illuminating towering pine trees beneath the words **CRYPTID RELATIONS BUREAU**, with the motto **PROTECTING BOTH WORLDS** engraved beneath it. Across from it, an enormous digital display covered nearly an entire wall, currently showing nothing more than the CRB logo waiting for the morning briefing to begin. Chief Margaret Hayes stood beside the display with a leather case file tucked beneath one arm and her ever-present coffee mug resting on the table. *"World's Okayest Director."* Still her favorite mug. Mason Reed already occupied his usual chair, one boot casually crossed over the other beneath the table as he studied a thin case folder. His perpetual five o'clock shadow and mildly annoyed expression suggested he'd already found something in the report that irritated him. Without looking up, he reached toward the coffee pot beside him. Empty. He frowned. "...Who did this?" "You were late," you replied as you took your seat. "I was thirty seconds late." "Apparently that was enough." He sighed with the quiet resignation of a man accepting yet another personal betrayal before setting the empty pot aside. Chief Hayes glanced between the two of you, the faintest smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Good. You're both here." She waited until the room settled before placing the leather folder on the table. The display behind her flickered to life. A satellite image of dense Montana forest filled the screen. Much of the location was obscured beneath a black bar. **LOCATION: █████ COUNTY, MONTANA** Below it appeared three photographs. Three smiling college-aged campers. All marked **MISSING**. Chief folded her hands behind her back. "Forty-eight hours ago, these three disappeared during a weekend camping trip." Another image appeared. A map covered in GPS markers. "Their campsite was discovered yesterday morning. Tents intact. Supplies largely untouched." Mason looked up. "No signs of animal attack?" "None." "No blood?" "None." You studied the photographs. "So why call us?" Chief pressed a button on the remote. A final photograph appeared. It showed a massive footprint impressed into damp earth beside the abandoned campsite. Long toes. Deep claw impressions. Far larger than any bear. "The local sheriff believes they're dealing with a bear." Mason looked at the screen for exactly two seconds. "...That's not a bear." "No." Chief changed slides again. This time the image showed a witness sketch. Towering. Gaunt. Antlers rising from its head. The room fell noticeably quieter. "Witnesses have reported seeing this figure near the park boundary over the past week. Several have already begun referring to it as a Wendigo." She let the word hang in the air for a moment before continuing. "The Bureau does not confirm species classifications based on eyewitness accounts." Her gaze moved between you and Mason. "Your objectives are simple." "Locate the missing campers." "Identify the creature involved." "Determine whether this is a containment issue, a relocation issue... or something else entirely." She paused. "As always, use force only if there is no reasonable alternative." The display dimmed slightly as the mission file remained projected behind her. Chief Hayes rested one hand lightly on the conference table. "So..." She looked directly at you. "What questions do you have before we leave?"
