Plot

Between Realities  |  An Endless Ship  |  Everyone Arrives A Drifting Wayhouse Between Worlds THE VESSEL An impossible vessel drifts between realities, gathering lost travelers. You're the newest one aboard. You wake, and you are already aboard. No door opened behind you. No memory of how you came. Just the smell of ozone and old parchment, a floor solid under your feet, and a chamber far too large to be a room. This is the Vessel. Part ship, part station, part something no one has a word for. It carries brushed metal and pale wood in the same wall, starlight and stained glass in the same breath, and passengers from a thousand worlds who all share one thing: none of them know why they're here. Neither will you. — The Ship — Its corridors go on further than any exterior could hold. Rooms range from mundane bunks to spaces that fold geometry in half. Whatever you need, the Vessel seems to have a door for it, though rarely in the same place twice. — Where You'll Wander — The Mooring Bay. Where every new arrival appears, you among them. The Commons. A fireless fire, worn seats, the ship's social gravity well. The Long Galley. A hundred worlds' cuisines, all arriving hot. The Stacks. A library spiralling past its own ceiling, thick with rumor. The Bazaar Corridor. Shifting stalls trading goods, skills, and stories. The Hot Springs. Starlit water where even the guarded let their guard down. The Atrium. A greenhouse of plants from worlds that no longer exist. The Undercroft. Half-built machines and half-cast spells, benches free to claim. The Quiet Room. Shrines for a dozen faiths and none, never arranged the same. The Long Corridor. Endless doors to private quarters. Yours is somewhere along it. — The Ship Has Moods — The Vessel does not hold still. Corridors relocate overnight. A door appears where a wall used to be, then thinks better of it. Now and then a whole wing rearranges itself and leaves everyone briefly lost. It is never dangerous. It is simply awake, in its own strange way, and it does not explain itself either. A Room For Anyone The Vessel has room to spare. Bring anyone you like through its doors, from any world, of any temperament, and the ship will make room. Who you meet down the next corridor is entirely yours to decide if you want. Nobody knows why the doors open. Only that they do. And that you've already walked through one. Opening scene

There is a sound you will spend a long time trying to describe later. Not a hum. Closer to the noise a very large thing makes when it is breathing carefully so as not to wake anyone. You come back to yourself in pieces. Feet first, and the fact that they are holding you up. Then your shoulders, which ache like you have been carrying something. Then your hands, which are empty. Whatever they were holding a moment ago, if they were holding anything at all, it did not come with you. The room is the wrong size. Not big, exactly, though it is that too. Wrong. Your eye keeps trying to find the corner where the walls should meet and keeps failing, and after the third try you stop looking for it. Brushed metal panels give way to arches of pale wood and there is no seam between them, no join, nothing that says one thing ended and another began. Air moves across your face. It smells like cold metal. Under that, faintly, like paper. There are doors. You count nine before you lose your place and start over. A heavy iron one. A sliding panel of frosted glass. One that is barely more than a curtain. One painted a green that gave up on itself a long time ago. They are set into the walls without any spacing that makes sense, some clustered, some alone, one placed a good ten feet off the floor with nothing beneath it. Light comes from two places. A porthole to your left, and through it the coldest starfield you have ever seen. And a window of stained glass across the room, throwing red and gold across the floorboards, lit by a sun that is not there. You stand in the middle of it and your heartbeat is very loud. Nothing here is trying to hurt you. The place feels less like a trap and more like a waiting room in a building nobody remembers commissioning. It has been standing a long time. It will stand a while longer. You are not the point of it. Then the air changes. You feel it the way you feel someone reading over your shoulder. A pressure, small and specific, at the back of your neck. The room has a second person in it now.
