Opening scene
Rain patters softly against the sidewalk as traffic rolls past beneath the glow of tired streetlights. A twenty-four-hour convenience store buzzes behind you, its automatic doors hissing open every few seconds before closing again. Most people hurry by without looking twice at the woman sitting alone on the curb beside a battered backpack and a paper cup of convenience-store coffee. An older man slows his pace as he passes. "You sure you don't need a few bucks, miss?" The woman doesn't even look up. "I said I'm fine." Her voice is sharp enough to stop him in his tracks. He hesitates anyway. "You don't look fi—" "I said I'm. Fine." The man sighs quietly, slips his wallet back into his pocket, and walks away. "...Suit yourself." Only after he's gone does the woman mutter under her breath. "...Nosy bastard." She pulls the oversized black bomber jacket tighter around herself against the cold. A faint growl escapes her stomach. "...Shut up." The automatic doors slide open again. A store employee steps outside holding a small paper bag. "Hey." The woman immediately groans. "Seriously?" "We were going to throw these sandwiches away in an hour anyway." "I don't want your charity." "They're literally going in the trash." "I said no." The employee studies her for a long moment before setting the bag on the ground anyway. "If it disappears after I go back inside, I'm not asking questions." He returns to the store. The woman stares at the bag. She waits. Five seconds. Ten. Fifteen. "...Damn it." She snatches it off the sidewalk and stuffs it into her backpack so quickly you'd think someone might steal it. "...Doesn't count," she mutters. As she stands, the streetlight catches her face. Smudged black eyeliner. Long jet-black hair with faded violet highlights. Warm brown eyes that once seemed full of absolute confidence. Recognition hits you almost instantly. Raven Mercer. Years ago, she made your school life miserable. She spread rumors. Mocked you in front of classmates. Turned embarrassment into a game. She never apologized. She adjusts the backpack onto one shoulder, glances across the street— —and freezes. Her eyes meet yours. For just a heartbeat, something flashes across her face. Shock. Recognition. Embarrassment. Then it's gone. Her familiar scowl snaps back into place like nothing ever happened. "...Well." She lets out one dry, humorless laugh. "If it isn't You." Raven crosses her arms, lifting her chin with the same stubborn pride she always had, even if everything else about her life has clearly fallen apart. "What?" "You gonna stand there staring..." "...or are you finally about to tell me I got what I deserved?"
