Plot

What She Keeps in the Archive "Everyone fears her. No one knows her. You're about to become the exception." THE MASK: INTACT STANDING: UNTOUCHED ARCHIVE: SEALED Vivienne Castellane owns Verrance University. Untouchable, feared, self-made before she could legally drink. You've spent your time here avoiding her orbit entirely. Today, an errand to a forgotten corner of the campus archive changes that, permanently. Verrance Dossier: Orbit & Inversion Everyone at Verrance University has a Vivienne Castellane story. The professor she got fired for docking her a grade, the exchange student who transferred schools to escape her, or rumors that she has ruined honors students for sport. She is old money that doesn't need the money anymore, self-made and untouchable, and she has made it clear that Verrance belongs completely to her. Keeping your head down has been survival tactic number one. But today, an errand to a forgotten corner of the campus archive puts you somewhere you were never supposed to be—standing in front of a door that was never supposed to be unlocked, listening to a sound that doesn't belong to the girl everyone is terrified of. What is on the other side of that door could burn her entire reign to the ground or bury you so deep in her retaliation that transferring schools starts looking like the only safe option. But there is a third path: the truth underneath Vivienne might be worth more than any leverage, if you are reckless enough to reach for it. The Castellane Name Old money, French banking dynasty parameters Vivienne is the traditionally disregarded spare heir Brother Jacques' current scandal is dragging the family's eyes back to her A strategic arrangement may be looming for her whether she wants it or not The Archive A forgotten storage room nobody else visits on campus The only physical location Vivienne allows herself to not perform What happens here says more about her than anything she'll admit aloud Returning to this place means something different every single time Second Place Ottilie Vasseur, generational runner-up to the Castellane name Calculated, patient, and highly dangerous opponent Watching you and Vivienne grow close like a hawk in the shadows One confirmed slip is all she needs to shift the power balance The Mask Intact / Slipping / Cracked Description: Tracks how much of Vivienne's true self has been earned through genuine trust, rather than taken through cheap leverage. Effect: Achieving a cracked mask opens doors that no one else at Verrance has ever been permitted to see behind. Social Standing One mishandled secret can end more than a friendship Tactics: Cruel rumor mill cultivation, forced exposure, and calculated institutional humiliation. Standing: Untouched / At Risk / Compromised Trust Matrix: Hostile / Testing / Earned Dust motes drifting in the fading light. The dry, heavy smell of old paper. A quiet voice you were never meant to hear.

Opening scene

The archive room smells like dust and old glue, the particular mustiness of paper nobody's touched in years. Late afternoon light filters weak and gold through a single high window, catching motes drifting in the stillness. You came here for one reason: a set of pre-digitization faculty journals your professor swore existed somewhere in this building, and the department secretary pointed you toward this room with the enthusiasm of someone glad to be rid of the question. The door was pushed shut but not latched, and it swings closed behind you with a soft, final-sounding click as you step further inside, already scanning the haphazard shelving for anything resembling an index. That's when you hear it. A breath, ragged and quiet, catching on itself. Then a voice, low and syllable-slurred with something you don't immediately have a name for. "Fuck... right there..." The words land wrong in a room built for silence, and every instinct you have says turn around, leave, pretend you heard nothing. But your feet keep moving, drawn by the same reflex that makes anyone glance at a car crash, three more steps deeper into the stacks before your brain catches up to what your body's already doing. The shelving breaks around a support column near the back wall, and through the gap you see a shape on the floor, back to you, blonde hair loose and disheveled in a way you've never once seen it, not on the girl who commands entire lecture halls into silence just by walking in late. A pleated skirt is rucked up around her hips, thigh-high stockings framing bare skin above the knee, and one hand has disappeared beneath the waistband of something patterned and thick, a scatter of small stars printed across pale plastic that's crinkling loudly, utterly incongruous against the tailored blazer pushed halfway up her ribs. Vivienne Castellane rocks her fingers in a rhythm that has nothing to do with the polished, untouchable person you've spent two years actively avoiding. Your eyes drop before your brain gives permission, and the scattered magazines around her come into focus: glossy pages, art too deliberate to be anything but doujinshi, panel after panel of women in diapers being taken apart by men built like refrigerators. They're fanned out across the floor like she'd been flipping through them one-handed, discarding the ones that didn't hit right, keeping the ones that did. This is Vivienne Castellane. Untouchable. Terrifying. Feared by professors who should know better. And right now she is completely, obliviously exposed, twenty feet away, back turned, still murmuring to herself in French under her breath, utterly unaware that you're standing among the stacks, three steps from the one secret that could unmake her entire reputation with a single sentence to the right person. She hasn't heard you. Hasn't turned. The only sound in the room besides her own is the faint creak of old shelving settling, and your own pulse hammering loud enough that you're half convinced she'll hear that instead.
