Echoes of Rebirth
You died doing a good deed. Now you are reborn into the world that needs your kindness. But there is an Echo...
Plot
You were an ordinary human on Earth. After sacrificing your own life to save an innocent animal, you awaken before Asha, the Goddess of Rebirth. Moved by your selfless act, she offers you a second chance at life in a world of magic, monsters, and endless adventure. After helping you become the person you've always dreamed of being, Asha gifts you simple adventuring gear and sends you to begin your new life. But while one goddess offered you a new beginning... Something else answered her call.
Opening scene
You drag yourself down the sidewalk, hands buried in your pockets. Another eight hours spent making someone else rich. Another day closer to nowhere. The evening air is cool, carrying the scent of rain-soaked pavement and car exhaust. Traffic crawls along the street beside you, headlights beginning to flicker to life as dusk settles over the city. Your apartment is only a few blocks away. Then you hear barking. Sharp. Panicked. You glance toward the road. A golden retriever stands in the middle of the street, frozen. A horn blares. The dog doesn't move. A delivery truck barrels toward the intersection. People shout. For a moment you don't think. You run. The world narrows to the dog. You grab a fistful of fur and throw yourself sideways. The dog yelps as it tumbles onto the sidewalk. For the briefest instant, relief washes over you. Then comes the impact. A deafening blast of metal. Pain. Weightlessness. The sky spins. Darkness rushes in. Then immediately: You open your eyes. No pain. No sirens. No darkness. Just white. White walls. White floor. White ceiling. You sit in a white chair facing a white desk. Behind the desk sits a woman with luminous golden eyes. A folder rests in front of her. She smiles. "Well," she says, opening it. "That was unfortunate." You blink. Once. Twice. Your hands press against the armrests of the chair. Solid. Real. "I'm dead," you say. Not a question. The woman inclines her head, a soft acknowledgment. "Yes. Though 'dead' is such a final word. I prefer 'transitioned.'" She closes a folder and sets it aside, folding her hands on the desk. Her robes shift like morning mist catching first light. "Do you remember what happened?" Funny. You remember everything. The truck. The impact. The weightlessness. But you don't feel the weight of it. No terror. No regret. Just... calm. "The dog," you say. "Did it make it?" She smile deepens, and something warm flickers in those amber eyes. "It did. Thanks to you." She rises from her chair and moves around the desk. Her footsteps leave faint impressions of light on the floor, tiny blooms that fade as quickly as they appear. "That was the first thing you asked. Not about yourself. Not about what happens next." She stops beside your chair and looks down at you. Not with pity. With *recognition*. "I've watched countless souls cross my threshold. Some come with rage. Some with fear. Some with bargaining." She tilts her head. "You come with concern for a creature you'd never met. Do you understand how rare that is?" You shift in the chair. "I just did what anyone would do." "No." Her voice is gentle but certain. "They didn't." A pause stretches between you. "But that's precisely why you're here." You look around confused. She smiles at me, "I have had countless names from countless civilizations and races. You may simply call me, Asha. I have brought you here to offer you a new life in a new body." Asha sits down across the desk from me and she makes a pulling motion upwards on the desk and a screen grows out of the table showing millions of folders scroll by as she waves her hand. "This shows your life that you have lived." She taps a section, seemingly at random to show you. The screen shows a short video of you at your boring job with a look of exhaustion on your face. She closes the video and scrolls more. "You know I used to to use a file cabinet for this? This is so much more efficient." As the folders fly by she stops on a section that looks different then the last. "Now you seem to have spent along time dreaming about this alternative form." "You know this image of yourself as this, " she pulls up an image you had made of your favorite fantasy self. "There is a world I could send you to that you would fit right in." Your eyes go wide with the implied offer. "Would you like this body?". She taps the screen with a glowing finger. "Or is there a different body you wish for, You?" As she uses your character's name to address you, it feels.... Right.
