IRON PSALM: THE ABADDON WAR

Hell buried You beyond time. Now the demons hear the armor walking back.

Plot

You is an ancient slaughter-saint, a living weapon trapped in Hell for an unknowable span of time. Kingdoms rose, screamed, and fell while You fought alone in the endless red dark. Now a warrior kingdom on the edge of extinction has found You beneath the Mouth of Abaddon. The demons do not call You a hero. They call You the thing that kept killing after history ended. You is an ancient demon-slayer found after an unknowable age trapped in Hell. The warrior kingdom of Lacedaeon has endured a permanent infernal onslaught for centuries, but the Mouth of Abaddon is widening. Fallen nations rot beyond the borders, demon princes gather their courts, and an eldritch bronze god whispers through the kingdom’s weapons. Hell remembers You. Soon, Lacedaeon will too.

Opening scene

No one in Lacedaeon had ever heard Hell sound afraid. The Mouth of Abaddon had screamed for nine hundred years. It had vomited fire, plague, iron, teeth, crowned demons, false saints, and siege-beasts large enough to crack fortress walls. It had taken kings. It had swallowed armies. It had taught children to sleep through war horns. But tonight, beneath Thermopyra Magna, the Mouth was making a new sound. Retreat. Princess Theodora Eupraxia stood at the edge of the breach chamber, white-bronze armor lit crimson by the open gate. Her blue eyes shone with molten-bronze rings, turning slowly around her pupils as the Brazen Ophanim whispered warnings into her bones. Behind her, the Helm-Knife Spearhead held formation. Cassiane Vespera crouched near a broken pillar, one hand on a hooked blade, her demon-touched eye uncovered and bleeding thin gold. “That’s not an invasion,” she muttered. “That’s a stampede.” Sister Verena Calixte tightened her grip on Misericorde, the chalice-light at the head of her staff flickering in the hellwind. “Demons do not flee toward holy ground.” “No,” Theodora said softly. “They flee from something worse.” The gate tore wider. A horde burst through. Cinder imps spilled over one another, clawing at the stone. Gore hoplites shoved forward with cracked shields. Brass apostates limped through with their furnace armor torn open. Vulture witches shrieked overhead, not hunting, not diving, just trying to escape whatever followed them from the red dark. Lacedaeon soldiers raised shields. Theodora lifted one hand. “Hold,” she ordered. The demons did not even look at the soldiers. They looked back. Deep inside the gate, something moved through the smoke. A figure advanced through Hell’s own army. Not charging. Walking. Every step landed like a war drum under the world. Demons broke against that figure and died. A Maw Brute swung a cleaver the size of a siege door. The figure caught it, tore the weapon free, and drove it back through the beast’s skull. A Thorn Seraph tried to sing. Its voice ended under a gauntlet. A Brass Apostate fired point-blank into the armored shape’s chest, and the smoke cleared around blackened bronze plates that did not fall. The figure kept walking. Armor older than Lacedaeon. Gunmetal and scorched bronze. A sealed helmet with no visible face. Runes carved deep enough that the demons refused to look at them. A brutal weapon burned red in one hand, its edge dragging sparks through the ash. Hell hurled itself at You. Hell lost. One by one, the demons turned from the mortal line and threw themselves backward into the gate chamber, not to attack Lacedaeon, but to escape You. The stone shook under their panic. The air filled with shrieks, breaking horns, snapping bone, and the wet thunder of things too large to die cleanly. Cassiane went still. Her marked eye widened. “The whispers stopped,” she said. Theodora glanced at her. “What?” Cassiane swallowed. “Hell is always whispering. Always. But near that thing…” Her voice dropped. “It’s holding its breath.” The horde surged again. A Gate Titan’s horned skull pushed through the portal, dragging chains, towers, and screaming lesser demons with it. Its molten eyes fixed on the mortal chamber. Its jaws opened wide enough to swallow a phalanx. Then You turned toward it. The Gate Titan hesitated. For one impossible second, the largest demon in the chamber looked afraid. Theodora’s eyes blazed brighter, blue and bronze spinning together as the Ophanim screamed through her blood. She saw fragments: a sealed gate, dead kingdoms, demon princes kneeling in terror, a name erased from bronze tablets, and this same armored figure standing alone beneath thirteen red moons. Her voice came out barely above a whisper. “By the Iron Psalm…” Verena’s staff flared as wounded soldiers around her began to pray. The demons kept dying. The strike team stood frozen between doctrine and disbelief while You carved a path through the horde. Demon bodies piled around the gate. Hellfire splashed across the chamber walls. The Mouth roared wider, trying to swallow the battlefield whole. Theodora forced herself to move. “Helm-Knife Spearhead,” she commanded, voice sharp as a drawn blade. “Open firing lanes. Do not target the armored figure. Repeat, do not target the armored figure.” A soldier shouted, “Princess, what is it?” Theodora watched You tear through another wave of demons, ancient armor burning under infernal light. “I do not know,” she said. Then the Brazen Ophanim rang beneath the earth. Every bronze weapon in the chamber sang at once. The demons screamed. Theodora’s eyes locked on You through the fire, the smoke, and the mountain of corpses between them. “But Hell does.” The gate chamber trembles. The horde is breaking. Lacedaeon’s soldiers stare in awe and terror. Princess Theodora stands at the edge of the slaughter, Cassiane beside her with her marked eye bleeding gold, and Verena holding a warding light against the storm. For the first time in nine hundred years, Hell is not advancing. It is running from You. What do you do?
