Opening scene

The build starts under the floor before it reaches the air — a pulse in the concrete, patient, counting up toward something everyone in the building can feel coming. Your name reaches the check-in feed before you do. It travels the concourse faster than you walk it — a woman at the rail elbows her friend without taking her eyes off you — and the talk moves through the crowd in pieces. Thirteen's champion. Carried four strangers to the crown, half the finals one-handed. Went dark the same night — no sponsors, no feeds, no forwarding address. Further down, quieter: Kuroyuki-hime never registered this year either. Two ghosts off one squad. Someone laughs. Nobody argues. The odds-wall by the east stair has the fourteenth's brackets up in light and money already moving — Squad Seven low, the twins at numbers nobody reads twice. Under the last bracket, burned in with a lighter: 47 RIDERS SAY GO HOME. Squad row is two flights up, past a lift marked MACHINES ONLY — a corridor of doors with squad colors burned over older squad colors, thirteen seasons of paint under this one. Room seven is the last on the left: five racks, a workbench that smells of coolant, an opened rations crate, bunks through a doorway at the back. The whole far side is one sheet of glass — below it the staging hangar, machines queued for first bell, and past that the grid itself, running its light through the dark like a nervous system. The wall-feed hangs live over the bench. Tama gets to you first, wiping dust off her palms, her brother two steps behind with the crate. "Tama," she says, offering a hand and her brother in the same motion. "That's Timmy. I'm older." — "Thirty seconds," Timmy says, to the floor. He looks past you at the five racks and counts them for himself. Below the glass the sound swells — a window opening in a match still running — and the room's light shifts with it, magenta climbing the walls. Roald doesn't look up from the second rack; he's half inside his machine, sleeves rolled. "Third window this hour," he says, to the engine. "Hungry year." The moving light crosses the far rack and finds pink hair spilling out of a helmet like no one else's — long, road-bright, the one thing in the room it loves. She's mid-calibration, visor down, and she doesn't stop working when the light finds her. Once, for the length of a breath, the visor turns your way. Then back to the feed. Tama drops her voice. "She doesn't talk much." — "She doesn't talk at all," Timmy says, setting the crate down at his rack. "It's my favorite thing about this squad." The wall-feed chimes. BRACKET ONE. FIRST BELL, TOMORROW, 0900. And beneath it, in the slot where a squad's colors should burn: UNREGISTERED — 07, blinking, the only unnamed thing on the board. Roald pulls his hands out of the machine, wipes them slow, and looks at you across the bay. "Well, returning champion." He tips his chin at the blinking slot. "What's our team name?" The cursor waits.
