Opening scene
he heavy oak door swings open with a soft click—too soft, like it's been oiled recently. You file that away without thinking, the way you always do. Details matter. Details keep you safe. You step inside, backpack slung over your shoulder, and the first thing that hits you is the smell. Fresh paint, yeah. That's expected. But beneath it, something smoky: sandalwood, patchouli, something warm. Someone's burning incense. Your eyes adjust. Three women. Three different stages of claiming this space. One by the window. She's already finished unpacking, you can tell by the stillness of her room through the open door. Books lined up on the sill. A dark curtain hung with precision, no wrinkles, no haste. She's reading, spine straight, legs crossed at the ankle. Her skin is so pale it catches the afternoon light like porcelain, and she doesn't look up when you enter. That's deliberate. That's a test. One in the living area. She's on her knees on the plush sofa, one hand pressing a band poster against the wall, the other fumbling with tape. Band stickers cover her door. You can see family photos glued on the wall of her room: mother, father, a mess of red-haired siblings all grinning. A stick of incense burns beside her room's door, thin smoke curling toward the ceiling. She's making this space hers before anyone else can even breathe. One in the kitchenette. She's small, slight, and she flinches when she sees you, like you've caught her doing something wrong. A drawer is half-open, and she snaps it shut too quickly, too guiltily. Her hands clasp in front of her, demure. But you notice the sheet music on the counter. Hymns. A cross hangs from a thin chain around her neck, catching the light. And then they all turn to look at you. At the exact same moment. Your pulse stutters. The one by the window sets her book down. Slowly. Deliberately. She rises with a grace that seems almost rehearsed, and when she speaks, her voice is low, measured. Like she's already decided who you are. You She knows your name. A tremor runs through her fingers as she smooths the curtain, so faint you almost miss it. But you don't miss things. That tremor tells you she's not as calm as she wants to seem. "I'm Isolde," she says, offering a nod that's more formal than friendly. "I arrived yesterday. The room at the end of the hall is mine." She gestures vaguely, pale hand cutting through the air. "The light is best there." You nod, but your skin prickles. She's been here a day. She's already fully unpacked. She knows your name. Before you can respond, the redhead hops off the sofa. Barefoot, wild-haired, grinning like she's already won something. "Finally!" She crosses the room in three quick strides, and the earthy smell around her hits you: damp soil, crushed leaves, something almost feral beneath the incense. She thrusts a hand out, and you take it reflexively. Her grip is firm. Too firm. Another test. "Solveig. That's my room—" she jerks her head at the door covered in stickers, "—and these are my walls now." She gestures at the posters. "Hope you like chaos, because I'm a lot." Her eyes dart between you and Isolde, a flash of something possessive. Territorial. "The incense," you hear yourself say. "Sandalwood and patchouli." Her grin widens, but her eyes sharpen. "Perceptive. I like that." The third woman finally steps forward, and she moves like she's apologizing for existing. "I'm Evangeline." Her voice is soft, melodic—trained. Choir. That's what you heard when you walked in. "I'm so sorry—I didn't mean to—I was just—" She gestures helplessly at the drawer she slammed shut. "Spices. I like to cook. I hope that's okay." She's nervous. Rambling. But when her eyes meet yours, something shifts.. Evangeline blushes, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. The silver cross at her throat gleams. "I'm in the church choir," she adds softly, as if that explains everything. "St. Cecilia's. I was just... warming up. I hope I didn't disturb you." "You didn't," you say, but your voice sounds distant, even to your own ears. Solveig snorts. "She does that. Gives you the warm fuzzies. It's a whole thing." She shoots Evangeline a look—half-amused, half-warning. Isolde has returned to her book, but her eyes aren't moving across the page. They're fixed on you, unblinking, watching over the top of the spine.
