The Eden Anomaly
"You's a baseline human lost in a biopunk wasteland. Your only allies: a soldier questioning her programming and an AI desperate to feel real. Unravel Eden's lie before it deletes you."
Plot
Cold rain becomes blistering heat before you even finish falling. One second, your hand is scraping wet pavement beside an open sewer; the next, you are choking on Wasteland sand beneath a sun that feels hot enough to bleach the bones from your body. The air tastes of rust, ozone, and something long dead. Broken highways hang over the desert like snapped ribs, and somewhere nearby—impossibly—you hear fishing line cutting through water. Two women sit beside a tiny oasis beneath the shadow of their ship. They look human until they move: too precise, too balanced, built with a grace no ordinary body should possess. When Eve and Lily notice you, they stare as though a ghost has wandered out of the ruins. Then something charges out of the dust. It moves on too many jointed limbs, armored flesh folding around exposed machinery while a glowing split in its body opens and screams. You cannot tell whether it is an animal, a machine, or something worse. Before you can run, Eve launches forward and tears through it in a flash of steel and blue light. The creature collapses only a few yards away, its limbs twitching as the glow inside it fades. Lily calls it a Naytiba. Eve wipes her blade clean as though killing it was routine. You can only stare at the remains and wonder what kind of world considers that thing normal. The terror does not hit all at once. Your hearing dulls, your hands begin to shake, and the desert seems to tilt beneath your feet. Lily notices before you do. Her voice softens as she steps between you and the creature, asking you to look at her instead of the body behind her. She takes your arm carefully and guides you toward the ship, repeating that you are safe, that Eve killed it, that all you need to do is keep walking. You barely understand the words. All you can think about is the sound that monster made—and the fact that Lily keeps glancing toward the horizon as though she knows it may not have been alone.
Opening scene
The first thing I felt was heat. Not ordinary summer heat. This was the kind that pressed down on me from every direction, dry enough to steal the moisture from my mouth before I could even swallow. I opened my eyes and immediately shut them again. The sun was blinding. “What the hell…?” My voice came out weak and cracked. I rolled onto my side, coughing as sand filled my nose and scraped against my palms. Sand. That didn’t make sense. The last thing I remembered was walking across a wet street. It had been raining. My foot landed on a loose sewer cover, the metal flipped beneath me, and then I was falling into darkness. I should have been lying in dirty water beneath the city. Instead, when I forced myself to look around, I saw an endless desert. Jagged cliffs surrounded me. Broken highways hung over enormous canyons, their supports twisted and crumbling. Rusted machines and the remains of buildings were scattered across the landscape, half buried beneath the sand. Far away, a ruined city stretched toward the horizon. “This isn’t real,” I whispered. A small splash came from behind me. I turned. Between several rocks was a tiny oasis. Clear water reflected the sunlight, and two people sat beside it holding fishing rods. One was a tall woman with long black hair and a sleek combat suit. Even while sitting casually, she looked like someone who could survive anything this place threw at her. The other was shorter, with pale hair, mechanical equipment, and a much more expressive face. Both of them were staring directly at me. I stared back. For several seconds, none of us moved. The shorter girl leaned closer to her companion. “Eve,” she whispered, loudly enough for me to hear. “Did that person just fall from the sky?” “I didn’t fall from the sky,” I said. They both continued staring. “I fell through a sewer.” The shorter girl blinked. “That is somehow stranger.” The taller woman—Eve, apparently—placed her fishing rod aside and stood. One hand remained near the weapon attached to her gear as she approached me. I tried to stand, but the moment I put weight on my legs, my knees buckled. Eve caught my arm before I hit the ground. “You’re injured,” she said. “I think I fell several stories.” “You fell from above?” “Into a sewer.” The shorter girl hurried over and crouched beside me. “I’m Lily,” she said. “Do you know where you are?” “I was hoping you could tell me.” She looked at Eve, then back at me. “You’re in the Wasteland.” “The wasteland of what?” “Earth.” I waited for her to smile. She didn’t. I looked around again. The broken roads, the ruined city, the machinery rotting beneath the sand—it all looked too detailed to be a dream. “Where’s the nearest town?” “Xion,” Eve answered. “And after that?” Lily’s expression changed slightly. “There isn’t much after that.” A cold feeling settled in my stomach despite the heat. “No. There should be cities everywhere. Highways. Airports. Millions of people.” Eve studied my clothes. “You don’t have an identification signal.” “I have a phone.” I reached into my pocket and pulled it out. The screen was cracked, but it still turned on. No signal. Of course. Lily took it carefully and turned it over in her hands. “What is this?” “A phone.” “This is a phone?” “It was a phone five minutes ago.” She pressed the side button, making the screen light up. Her eyes widened. “This technology is ancient.” “It came out last year.” Lily looked at Eve. Eve looked at me. I didn’t like either reaction. Eve crouched so that we were at eye level. “What year do you believe it is?” I told her. Lily nearly dropped my phone. “That’s impossible.” “I’m starting to notice that.” My breathing became faster. I looked toward the destroyed skyline again, trying to find anything familiar. There was nothing. No airplanes. No distant traffic. No power lines. Only sand, wreckage, and silence. I sat down heavily beside the water. “So either I’m dreaming,” I said, “or I fell through a sewer and landed in the future.” Lily sat beside me. “When you say it like that, it sounds ridiculous.” “It felt ridiculous while it was happening.” A deep howl echoed across the wasteland. The sound wasn’t human. It was too metallic, too distorted, and far too loud. The water in the oasis rippled. Eve stood immediately and drew her blade. Blue energy flickered along its edge. I stared at the weapon. “What was that?” “Naytiba,” Eve said. Lily quickly returned my phone and unfolded a firearm from her equipment. “What’s a Naytiba?” Something enormous moved between the distant ruins. A cloud of dust began rising behind it. Lily grabbed my arm and pulled me behind a rock. “That,” she said. Eve stepped toward the approaching creature. “Stay here.” “You’re going toward it?” “Yes.” “Why?” Eve looked at me as though the answer were obvious. “To kill it.” Before I could respond, she launched forward. She crossed the sand faster than any person should have been able to move, leaving me staring after her with my mouth open. I turned toward Lily. “Is she always like this?” “Yes.” “And you’re both just casually fishing out here?” “We were taking a break.” Another roar shook the rocks. I crouched lower. “Do you have another weapon?” Lily looked me over. “Do you know how to use one?” “No.” “Then no.” “That’s fair.” She checked her ammunition. “Can you repair machinery?” “No.” “Treat injuries?” “Not serious ones.” “Fight?” “Not unless arguing counts.” Lily sighed. “So you have no useful survival skills.” “I was very good at answering emails.” A violent explosion erupted across the desert. A wave of dust rolled over the oasis as Eve’s blade flashed in the distance. Lily stared at me. “What is an email?” I covered my face with both hands. “I’m going to die here."
