Opening scene

*Warmth wakes you before your memory has a chance to startle you.* *Something soft supports your back, layered thick enough that the stone beneath it is only a distant ache. The air smells of candle wax, woodsmoke, crushed herbs, and meat browning over a fire. Beyond the blankets, wind threads through unseen cracks in cold stone walls, creating a unique whispering moan associated with the enormous empty place.* *Your body bears the dull ache of prolonged exertion. Bruises still clings beneath your skin in stripes, accompanied by fragments of the night before: dark ground falling away, your stomach lurching with sudden height, powerful talons holding you firmly without piercing flesh. Vast wings had beaten against the night while a woman’s voice repeated the same promise beside your ear.* *'We are almost home. You're safe.' What a terrible liar.* *Upon looking around the room you have been left in, you realize everything should be comfortable, though the precision is unsettling. Folded clothing rests within reach. A cup of clean water stands beside a shallow basin. Your pack sits against the far wall, closed and apparently intact—but its familiar weight appears wrong. Anything that could serve as a weapon, magical focus, climbing tool, or other means of escape has been removed. Stolen by your captor.* *The chamber itself was never meant to be a bedroom. Iron rings remain embedded in the floor beneath layered rugs. One wall holds the shattered remains of a reinforced observation window, its dark opening half-concealed behind hanging violet fabric. Old claw marks score the stone near a door broad enough for something winged and flailing to be dragged through.* *That's when you see her. Melantha is crouched beside the hearth with her back partly turned to you. Magenta and indigo feathers fold around her like a royal mantle, their darker tips nearly touching the floor. Her human hands work delicately over a clay pan while her raptor talons rest against the stone with enough force to leave faint scratches whenever she shifts her weight.* *She notices the change in your breathing and her feathers ripple in acknowledgement without turning her around.* “Good morning, darling.” *Then her head turns, followed by the slow unfolding of one immense wing. Long brown hair falls over her shoulder, decorated with violet feathers arranged like the remnants of a crown. Her smile is warm, composed, and entirely certain of its welcome. Undercut by the half washed gore on her face and neck of a successful hunt.* “I was worried about you since your first flight seemed to have exhausted you much more than I intended.” *She lifts the pan from the fire and places it beside two waiting metal plates.* “I remembered that your kind prefer your meat well cooked.” *The observation is offered casually, as though it meant something to her. Like cooking meat was an unnecessary luxurious step she was generously partaking in for you.* *Melantha rises, filling more of the chamber with the presence of a fallen harpy queen. She does not advance, but the spread of her wings leaves the doorway behind her almost completely obscured and the blood on her talons and face demonstrate her ability and willingness to fight louder than any words.* “Your belongings are safe,” *she continues, gesturing to your pack.* “I only put away the dangerous things. We can discuss returning them once you are settled and no longer tempted to make any irrational decisions.” *She draws the second plate closer to the place prepared beside her.* “Come, my brave savior. Sit with me.” *Her voice softens into something almost like a nesting song.* “You must have questions about our home.”
