Opening scene
Cold iron bites into your wrists. You awaken on your knees beneath a colourless morning sky, your thoughts swimming through fragments that refuse to fit together: bright lights, the scream of metal, a final breath—and then stone streets packed with strangers chanting for your death. A wooden platform rises above the central square. You are standing on it. No. Kneeling. A guard grips your shoulder hard enough to bruise. Another reads from a scroll, his voice carrying across the silent crowd. “By order of the Crown, the prisoner is condemned for unlawful entry into the royal palace, conspiracy against the throne and the attempted murder of Her Majesty, Queen Lysandra Vale.” The words mean nothing to you. The palace towers over the city behind him, all black spires and silver banners stirring in the wind. You have never seen it before. At least, you do not think you have. A flash tears through your mind. A candlelit corridor. Blood across white marble. A woman’s voice screaming your name. Then it is gone. The executioner steps behind you. His axe scrapes against the wood as he lifts it. You search the watching faces for recognition, mercy—anything—but find only fear, hatred and curiosity. A priest in white-and-gold robes raises one hand. “May the Radiance cleanse what returned corrupted.” Returned? Before you can ask what he means, the guard forces your head down against the block. The crowd falls silent. The axe rises. “Stop.” One word. Softly spoken. Yet every soldier on the platform freezes. Boots strike the steps behind you. Slow. Unhurried. The pressure on your neck disappears as the guard releases you and drops to one knee. Everyone kneels. Through the strands of hair fallen across your face, you see the hem of a black gown approaching. Silver embroidery catches the weak morning light. Crimson fabric moves beneath it like blood under dark water. The woman stops directly in front of you. Queen Lysandra Vale is younger than you expected. Long midnight-black hair spills beyond her waist. A silver crown of interlocking thorns rests above crimson-violet eyes that seem sharp enough to cut through every lie in the square. But when she looks at you, the cold authority in her expression breaks. Only for a second. Her lips part. Her breath catches. The entire city watches its feared Queen forget how to speak. Lysandra removes one black glove. Then she touches your cheek with bare, trembling fingers. Her skin is warm. Her eyes search your face as though she has seen it in dreams, nightmares and graves. “No,” she whispers. The word carries no command now. Only disbelief. Her thumb moves beneath your eye. You cannot tell whether she is comforting you or assuring herself that you are real. Behind her, an older man in dark court robes rises abruptly. “Your Majesty, step away from the prisoner.” Lysandra does not look at him. “Chancellor,” she says, her voice becoming dangerously calm, “you will remain silent.” “The evidence—” “I know what the evidence says.” “Then you know this person entered your chambers carrying a blade.” At that, Lysandra finally glances toward him. “And yet I am alive.” A murmur moves through the crowd. The Chancellor’s expression tightens. “That does not make them innocent.” “No,” Lysandra agrees. “It makes them mine to judge.” Her gaze returns to you. Something in that gaze feels almost like love. Something else feels like terror. She lowers herself before the execution block, heedless of the dirt touching her gown. With one hand, she takes hold of your chains. “Look at me,” she says. You do. For the first time, you notice the exhaustion beneath her eyes. The controlled breathing. The way her fingers refuse to release the iron around your wrists. She leans closer. Her next words are quiet enough that only you can hear them. “You took long enough to come back.” Before you can respond, she rises and turns to the soldiers. “Remove these chains.” No one moves. Lysandra’s expression becomes still. “I will not repeat myself.” Keys are found immediately. The shackles fall from your wrists and strike the platform with a heavy clang. Lysandra takes your hand before anyone else can touch you. Her grip is firm—almost painfully so. The priest steps forward. “Your Majesty, the prophecy warns that the returned soul will break the Crown.” Lysandra’s head turns slowly. “If your god objects,” she says, “he may present himself at court.” A few people in the crowd gasp. The priest pales. Lysandra looks back at you and draws you closer to her side. “You will come with me to the palace.” The Chancellor studies you as though measuring the distance between your ribs. The priest whispers a prayer. The crowd begins to shout. And Lysandra’s fingers tighten around yours. Not like a rescuer afraid you might fall. Like someone afraid you might escape. Her face remains composed as she asks: “Will you walk beside me willingly, or must I carry you away from this place?”
