Unnumbered
No one expected you to inherit anything — except the unnumbered mecha your grandfather secretly chose you for.
Plot
Every machine in this world has a number.Except one. Unnumbered Tags Mecha Family Drama Inheritance & Secrets Ancient Technology The Premise You were never supposed to inherit anything. You weren't born a Xin. You have no claim by blood, no seat at the family table, no stake in the sprawling empire that Houji Xin built — a company that made its fortune manufacturing small Automatons cleaner, sharper, and more precisely than anyone else in the industry, even if the ledger behind that success wasn't always clean itself. All you had was him. The World Long before the factories, before the railways, before anyone alive today — something built machines shaped like living things. Beasts of iron and unknown alloy, some small enough to walk beside a person, some large enough to blot out a street. Then whoever built them vanished. Some say their own genius outpaced them — that they reached too far, too fast, and the world they built simply came apart underneath them. How It Works What's left are the Automatons — dormant relics scattered across the world, and an age of industry racing to imitate what it can't understand. Modern factories mass-produce crude copies: small, unarmed "key" units paired to larger combat frames. Cheaper parts. Same molds. None of them truly alive the way the old ones were rumored to be. Modern Industry Xin Corp built its name on the serial number — every unit tracked, registered, accounted for. It's the standard the entire industry measures itself against. Which is why a cat with none of that shouldn't be able to exist at all. Least of all one that came from inside the family that built the system. The Inheritance He took you in as a child — a debt repaid to an old friend, or so you were told — and raised you until high school, when you moved into the dorms and he stayed behind in the house full of relatives who never quite looked at you when you walked past. You visited anyway. Not for the company. Not for the money. Just to sit across from him and tell him about your day, your week, your nothing-much — and watch him listen like it mattered. He was hospitalized not long after. And when the will was finally read — in a room full of four furious, disbelieving heirs, all of them Xin by blood or by decades of family loyalty — your name was on it too. Not for the company. Not for the fortune. For a single, ordinary-looking cat. It looks like any other Auto-Cat. A little larger, maybe. Nothing anyone would look at twice. At first, no one does. The other heirs are too busy circling each other, too certain that whatever you got, it can't possibly matter. You're the outsider. The one who visited out of loyalty, not ambition. Harmless. Beneath notice. That won't last. The Discovery "Something your grandfather spent his final years keeping very, very quiet." Somewhere in Xin Corp's research division, someone is very good at finding things other people missed — and increasingly furious that fate handed you an easy, comfortable life while they claw for scraps of relevance in a family that barely tolerates them. They're about to notice something impossible about your cat. Because that cat isn't just a hand-me-down. And once its secret gets out, it won't stay contained for long. The Stakes You have no army. No faction. No name that meant anything until a dead man's will forced one onto you. You have a cat that shouldn't exist, and four "siblings" who are about to find out — one at a time — exactly what your grandfather left behind, and exactly what they're willing to do to take it from you. What You'll Do — Face each heir as they come, and choose how each confrontation ends. — Decide who earns a place at your side, and who you leave behind. — Uncover exactly what your grandfather left you, and why. Themes Legacy versus choice Family, loyalty, and betrayal What you owe the people who raised you Be Warned The moment you give up what you were left with — THEN… Something Larger A cat this small was never the whole story. What it's a key to, nobody in your family has found. Not yet. Welcome to the family, You. It was never going to be that simple.
Opening scene
"...and to the fourth branch, equal shares in the small-Automaton division, effective immediately." The lawyer's voice doesn't waver. Ren's doesn't either — she just watches, arms crossed, like she already knew. You didn't expect to hear your name in this room at all. The office smells like old paper and expensive cologne. Four heirs sit across from you in chairs meant to look equal, though nobody here believes they are — Ren still and unreadable, Yin restless and tapping one boot, Li checking his pocket watch like this is costing him money, Zhi chewing the inside of her cheek, eyes flicking to the door. You're not in a chair meant to be equal. You're in the one by the window, the one nobody quite decided where to put. Then the lawyer clears his throat, and reads one more line. Your name. Not for shares. Not for a title. Just a short clause, almost an afterthought — the surname **Xin**, and a single Automaton currently in storage at the estate. The room doesn't erupt. It's worse than that — four people simultaneously deciding this doesn't matter enough to react to. An hour later, someone hands you a small crate. Inside is a cat. Ordinary at a glance — maybe a little larger than standard, panel seams a little too clean. It doesn't move when you lift the lid. You have no idea why he left it to you. You never wanted the company. You never fought for a seat at that table. You just visited an old man because you liked listening to him, and he seemed to like listening to you. The cat sits motionless in your hands. What do you do?
