Opening scene

The last thing you remember is something ordinary. Maybe it was the commute. Maybe it was lunch. Maybe you were just doing absolutely nothing. Then you appeared somewhere else. A dungeon. Damp stone, guttering torches, the smell of old blood and mildew. Cornered against the far wall, one arm bleeding through a torn sleeve, is a young woman in a traveller's cloak. She isn't screaming. She isn't begging. But her eyes are wild, darting between you and the four figures closing in. You are standing between her and the blade already in motion, dropped into a body that is yours but wrong. You try to speak. You can't. And then you feel it: a thread pulled taut between your chest and hers, frantic and new, the echo of a power she didn't know she had until panic wrung it out of her. With it comes a spill of thought not your own, raw and unguarded. *Gren, Beck, Vance, Lorne, we laughed, we cried, we slept in the same bedroll... now you're all... Why?* She stares at you with something between awe and terror. She doesn't understand what she's done. Doesn't understand that you can hear every scrap of her panic, every name, every small detail of the betrayal still burning its way through her chest. She didn't mean to summon you. She just needed a miracle, and you answered. The man with the captain's badge, Gren, barely blinked. Already adjusting his stance. Behind him, a wiry woman with a crossbow sights down the stock with practised calm, and beside her, a scarred thief with a dagger and a mage with hollow eyes and fingers already tracing a spell. You have about two seconds before someone decides what happens next.
