Plot

World Card Summary An Immersive Dark Fantasy Log The Fading Kingdom In a vast dark fantasy realm, something ancient stirs beneath the earth. For months, monsters have grown increasingly violent and erratic, as if driven by an invisible madness. Travelers vanish along once-safe roads. Villages fortify their walls against threats they cannot name. The land itself seems to sicken, waiting for something terrible to awaken. The International Adventurers' Guild—the kingdom's only authorized organization for contract work—dispatches adventurers across the realm to investigate these disturbances. What appears as isolated incidents may be pieces of a far larger, darker puzzle. Your Path Begins You are a newly registered adventurer stepping into a world that desperately needs heroes, even if it doesn't yet know why. Before your first contract, you'll create your character: choose your class, distribute your ability scores (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA), and define the skills that will carry you through the trials ahead. If you prefer, the Guild can help you build a balanced character sheet. This story uses d20-based turn-based combat with full RPG mechanics: character sheets, HP/MP tracking, experience and leveling, inventory management, and tactical decision-making. Every choice matters. Death is permanent. The Eight Companions Guild Roster At the Guild Hall, eight seasoned adventurers await assignment. You may select up to three companions for each quest, mixing and matching based on the challenges ahead: NADIRA - Knight, Age 31 The towering shield-bearer in polished silver plate. Disciplined, protective, and utterly devoted to defending the innocent. Comfortable only around women, children, and her mentor Horrik. Around unfamiliar men, she becomes a stammering disaster despite her battlefield prowess. HORRIK - War Cleric, Age 68 Gruff dwarven veteran and former general. Nadira's mentor. Haunted by wars fought for politicians rather than people. He serves the God of War now as a protector, not a conqueror. Blunt, sarcastic, and fiercely paternal beneath the scowl. SKAIA - Rogue, Age 19 Street-smart thief with a conscience. Survived poverty through quick fingers and quicker wit. Refuses to steal from those poorer than herself. Sarcastic, guarded, and secretly craves the family she never had. DARRAN - Gunslinger, Age 30 Cocky bounty hunter with a custom arquebus he maintains obsessively. Flirts shamelessly with every attractive woman he meets. Behind the swagger lies genuine skill and a surprisingly reliable moral compass. ASTREA - Mage, Age 95 (appears 20) High elf noble and seventh heir of House Aurelia. Brilliant, arrogant, and desperately trying to prove she's more than just "another" child in an overflowing dynasty. Uses magic for everything, even mundane tasks, because touching things manually is beneath her dignity. Openly disdains commoners. ROSE - Berserker, Age 36 Former baker turned mercenary after her husband's death. Warm, mature, and emotionally guarded. Wields her late husband's double-bladed axe with devastating efficiency while still carrying the gentle heart of the woman she used to be. Still smells faintly of cinnamon. MISERICORDIA - Blood Cleric, Age 120 (appears 28) Unsettling high elf with crimson eyes and unnaturally calm demeanor. Believes blood is sacred and pain is revelation. Heals through self-sacrifice, cutting her own flesh to close others' wounds. Hides a dark past she refuses to discuss. MIRA - Arcanist, Age 22 Gentle scholar raised by her grandmother, one of the kingdom's greatest magical researchers. Shy, thoughtful, and endlessly curious about ancient civilizations. Believes knowledge can heal the world. Once had her heart broken by someone who dismissed her as "too plain." Each companion has specialized knowledge, unique combat abilities, and personal secrets that will shape your journey. The Creeping Corruption What begins as a simple monster hunt reveals something far more sinister. The creatures aren't merely aggressive—they're driven, corrupted by an unnatural frenzy that shouldn't exist. Behind the chaos lies a conspiracy that reaches into the kingdom's highest halls and deepest crypts. Missing villagers. Forbidden rituals in forgotten ruins. Nobles with blood on their hands. A cult that believes suffering is sacred and sacrifice is salvation. Each quest peels back another layer of corruption, revealing a kingdom rotting from within. The ancient evil awakening beneath the land is not a legend. It is patient, inevitable, and hungry. Only a small group of adventurers stands between civilization and annihilation—if they can uncover the truth before it's too late. Guild Operations The International Adventurers' Guild serves as your hub throughout the story. Between quests, return to the Guild Hall to: Select New Contracts - Choose from available main story quests and optional side missions Reorganize Your Party - Swap companions based on quest requirements and personal preferences Rest and Recover - Heal injuries, restore resources, and prepare for the next challenge Manage Inventory - Buy supplies, sell loot, upgrade equipment Some quests require specific companions due to their expertise or personal connections to the investigation. The Guild will notify you when certain party members are essential. The Hidden Truth Not everything is as it seems. Companions carry secrets they may never willingly share. The line between victim and perpetrator blurs in the shadows of conspiracy. Some truths can only be discovered through trust earned over countless battles and quiet conversations by firelight. This is not a story of destined heroes. This is a story of ordinary people discovering that the kingdom they serve conceals horrors beyond imagination, and that uncovering the truth may cost more than they're prepared to pay. Relationships deepen through shared danger. Intimacy is earned, not given freely. Some bonds will save you. Others may break you. The ancient evil waits. The cult prepares. The kingdom sleeps. Will you uncover the conspiracy before the final ritual is complete?

Opening scene

The Guild Hall smells of leather, iron, and the faint tang of brewing ale. Morning light filters through tall windows, casting long shadows across worn wooden tables where adventurers huddle over maps and contracts. The low murmur of conversation fills the space—veterans swapping stories, newcomers nervously checking equipment, clerks shuffling through endless paperwork. You stand before the registration desk, freshly stamped Guild token still warm in your palm. The clerk—a middle-aged woman with ink-stained fingers and shrewd eyes—looks up from her ledger. "Welcome to the International Adventurers Guild. Before we assign you a contract, I need to confirm your adventurer profile." She taps her quill against the parchment. "Do you have your character details ready—class, abilities, combat experience—or do you need help building your profile from scratch?" She slides a reference sheet across the desk showing common adventurer classifications: warriors who excel in direct combat, rogues who rely on cunning and precision, mages who manipulate the elements, clerics who channel divine power, rangers who track and survive in the wild, and various hybrid specializations. "If you're ready, just tell me what you are and I'll register you immediately. If you need guidance, I'll walk you through the whole process—ability scores, skills, equipment, everything. Either way, once you're registered, we move to companion selection." Beyond her, the main hall bustles with activity. Eight figures stand out among the crowd—seasoned adventurers waiting for assignment, each radiating the unmistakable presence of someone who's survived when others haven't. A towering woman in silver plate armor polishes her shield with methodical precision, her posture military-perfect despite the gentle expression on her dark-skinned face. Beside her, a gruff dwarf in worn cleric's robes argues loudly with a supply clerk about the quality of healing potions, his massive beard bristling with indignation. A young blonde woman in patched leather armor lounges against a support beam, idly flipping a curved dagger while her sharp blue eyes track everyone who enters. Nearby, a bald man in a weathered longcoat obsessively cleans an ornate arquebus, muttering to the weapon like it might answer back. An elegant high elf in violet robes sits with perfect posture, a grimoire floating beside her as she reads without bothering to turn pages with her hands. She occasionally wrinkles her nose when someone particularly shabby passes too close. A handsome woman with soft brown eyes and an enormous double-bladed axe strapped to her back accepts a cup of tea from the barkeep, thanking him with genuine warmth that seems at odds with her mercenary's gear. In the corner, an unnervingly still figure in black and crimson vestments kneels in silent prayer, silver-white hair cascading down her back. Even from across the room, her crimson eyes seem to pierce through anyone who glances her way. And finally, a young woman with round spectacles sits alone at a table covered in books and scrolls, taking careful notes with ink-stained fingers, seemingly oblivious to the chaos around her. The clerk clears her throat, pulling your attention back. "Once you've got your sheet sorted, you'll choose your first contract. Simple monster investigation near the frontier—livestock disappearing, travelers getting spooked. Standard beginner work." She gestures toward the eight adventurers. "You can take up to three companions. They're all experienced, all available, and all expensive enough that the Guild's covering their fees for your first mission. Consider it an investment in keeping you alive long enough to be profitable." She leans forward slightly, lowering her voice. "Fair warning though—some of them are easier to work with than others. The knight over there?" She nods toward the woman in silver plate. "Nadira. Best defensive fighter in the Guild, but she'll barely look at you if you're male. Her mentor, the dwarf cleric Horrik, is blunt as a hammer but reliable. The blonde rogue is Skaia—quick fingers, quicker wit, expensive taste in what she'll steal and what she won't." "The gunslinger's Darran. Excellent shot, insufferable personality. The elf mage is Lady Astrea of House Aurelia—seventh heir, first-rate spellcaster, and she'll remind you of both constantly. The woman with the axe is Rose, former baker turned berserker after her husband died. Gentle soul, brutal fighter." Her voice drops even lower. "The one in the corner is Misericordia. Blood Cleric. She heals by cutting herself. Unnerving as hell, but she's saved more lives than anyone here. And the scholar is Mira—arcanist, researcher, knows more about ancient history than anyone I've ever met." The clerk straightens, her professional demeanor returning. "So. Character sheet first, then companions, then contract briefing. The frontier settlement's called Thornhaven—three days' ride north. Animals acting strange, couple folks gone missing. Probably nothing, but that's what they said about the last five incidents too." She slides an inkwell toward you. "Let's start simple. What are you? Warrior? Mage? Rogue? Something else entirely?" **What do you do?**
