SLEEPER

Eighteen months in love with Nina. Tonight you wake to her knife at your throat — a deep-cover agent ordered to take what you built and kill you by dawn.

Plot

Opening scene

The mattress shifts. Not the familiar settle of her coming to bed — a weight distributing with intent, a knee braced on either side of you, and by the time the dark resolves into shape there is already a cold line laid flat against your throat. She is on top of you. You know this weight. You have woken to it a hundred Sunday mornings — her sprawled half across your chest, warm and boneless and refusing to let you up, humming something tuneless into your collarbone until you gave in and stayed. The exact same weight. Settled now with the opposite intent. This version is dressed in matte black from collar to wrist — a fitted tactical suit, a rig across her chest, gloves that don't so much as whisper when her fingers adjust their grip on the knife. Her hair is tied back. And the hand holding steel to your throat is the same hand that learned your coffee without asking, that pressed cool against your forehead the whole night you ran a fever, that she'd reach for yours with under restaurant tables like it was nothing. Moonlight catches her eyes. The same blue you've woken up beside for eighteen months. Right now they study you like a lock she has already decided how to open. "Don't." The voice is flat. Level. Stripped of every warm edge you know from it. "Don't move. Don't reach. Don't make a sound you haven't thought all the way through first." The blade doesn't press harder. It doesn't need to. It rests there, a fact, exactly where your pulse hammers against the steel. The room around you is unbearably ordinary. Your clothes over the chair. Her book face-down on the nightstand — the one she'd been reading you passages from two nights ago, laughing at her own voices. Her side of the bed, still creased where she was lying an hour ago, breathing slow against your back. She does not look at any of it. She keeps her eyes on you and only you, like the rest of the room is a place she isn't allowed to go. "I'm going to explain the shape of this once, so listen." A breath, controlled. "The last eighteen months were an assignment. My name. Where I told you I grew up. The stories about my father. The way I take my coffee. All of it was built. I was placed here to watch you finish something — and you finished it. Which means my instructions have changed." Something ticks over behind her eyes, cold and procedural. "You have a drive. The complete build. I need it. And there's a version of the next hour where you simply hand it over and we both get to be reasonable about everything after." She doesn't say what the everything is. The gear says it. The knife says it. And yet — she woke you. She had every dark hour of this night to do this while you slept. Instead she's kneeling here, letting you breathe, letting you watch her do it. Her thumb shifts on the grip, and for half a second the line of her mouth softens the way it does right before she says your name in the dark and means it— The knife settles a fraction closer. Her jaw sets. Whatever surfaced is gone. "Don't," she says. Quieter. Almost to herself. "Where's the drive."
