ARK OF A THOUSAND WORLDS
After swapping minds with a dying fantasy hero, You must stop an immortal Demon King and uncover his world’s truth.
Plot
You believes he lives on Earth, unaware that his world is only one of many enormous inhabited rings contained within an artificial Dyson-sphere-like life-raft. Every ring preserves a different civilization from the lost galaxy, including humanity, fantasy races, supernatural creatures, sentient animals, and individual alien species. Spatial technology makes each ring feel like a spherical planet, leaving its inhabitants completely unaware of the structure surrounding them. Rarely, two rings pass close enough for their spatial systems to overlap. When people cross corresponding locations during these alignments, their consciousnesses can accidentally exchange worlds. During one such crossing, You swaps minds with Caelan Veyr, a legendary warrior fighting the Demon Lord Malgrath in the fantasy world of Elaris. Awakening inside Caelan’s injured body in the middle of the final battle, You instinctively accesses the warrior’s combat abilities and newly developed spatial powers, allowing him to kill Malgrath and save Caelan’s companions. Unable to return home and surrounded by people who believe he is Caelan, You must build a life within Elaris while fighting to preserve his real identity. The heroes gradually discover that Malgrath’s death coincided with the death of an alien tyrant on another ring. Their minds, bodies, and energies became linked through the same malfunction that exchanged You and Caelan, transforming both villains into nearly immortal beings. As Malgrath returns and attempts to seize his former kingdom from his daughter, Princess Vaelira, Elaris falls into a three-sided war between mortals, Vaelira’s demon forces, and the resurrected Demon King. Former enemies are eventually forced to unite, and Vaelira becomes a genuine friend to the heroes. Their alliance ends Malgrath’s reign and begins the first era of peace between demons and mortals. Throughout the conflict, You may continue investigating the mysterious exchange that brought him to Elaris. If he refuses to abandon the search, his research gradually reveals the Ark of Orbits, the existence of the other rings, and the possibility that Caelan is still alive inside You’s body on Earth. By the time a path home is discovered, however, You must decide whether returning to his original world is still what he truly wants.
Opening scene
The Demon Lord stood alone amid the ruins, yet the entire Dawn Vanguard could not force him back a single step. Seraphine’s radiant blade shattered against the black fire surrounding his armor. Lyra’s strongest spells broke apart before reaching him. Garrick’s shield had been split down the center, Mira could barely remain standing after exhausting her healing magic, and Kael’s arrows lay melted across the scorched earth. They attacked from every direction, chaining together techniques that had defeated armies and slain monsters spoken of only in legend, but Malgrath swept them aside as though they were frightened children challenging a god. His laughter rolled across the battlefield while the last surviving soldiers fled from the fortress walls. The heroes had reached the end of their journey, crossed a kingdom consumed by war, and sacrificed everything to stand before him—and it had not been enough. Caelan Veyr forced himself between Malgrath and the others, his sword trembling in hands slick with blood. He barely managed to turn aside the Demon Lord’s first strike, but the second came from below, the immense war hammer Griefmaker tearing through the ground before crashing into the side of his head. The impact lifted Caelan from his feet. His body spun through the air, trailing blood as he was hurled beyond the shattered courtyard and into the strange black arches of the Horizon Scar. “Caelan!” Seraphine screamed, lunging after him before Malgrath’s backhand sent her skidding across the stone. Garrick roared his name as he raised his broken shield, standing over Mira while Malgrath advanced. Lyra dragged Seraphine upright and threw up a failing barrier. Kael fired desperately from the smoke. Each of them called for Caelan, but the warrior did not move where he had fallen beneath the flickering violet light. You opened his eyes to fire, screaming, and a sky that did not belong to him. His skull felt as though it had been split apart. He was lying on broken stone in clothes he had never owned, holding a sword he had never touched, while horned creatures and armored warriors fought among the ruins around him. A woman with silver armor stared through a fractured wall of light, terror breaking across her face when she saw him move. “Caelan! Can you hear me?” she shouted. Another man, broad and bearded, turned toward him with desperate relief. “Caelan, get up!” You tried to answer, but his voice came out deeper than it should have been. He looked down and saw blood-covered hands that were larger, rougher, and scarred in places his hands had never been. “Who is Caelan?” he managed, the words strange upon his tongue. The group stared at him as though he had said something impossible. “It’s you,” the armored woman said, breathless and confused. “Caelan, are you all right?” You looked from her to the sword in his hand, then toward the towering horned figure walking through the remains of her barrier. Nothing made sense. He did not know where he was, why they knew him, or whose body had carried him there. Malgrath struck Garrick’s damaged shield and knocked the dwarf onto his back. The broken metal flew from his grip. Mira tried to reach him, but exhaustion brought her to one knee, leaving both of them beneath the shadow of the Demon Lord’s raised hammer. You saw the weapon begin its descent. He did not decide to move. The distance between them simply vanished. One moment he was standing beneath the black arches, and the next he was directly in front of Malgrath, one hand lifted above his head. Griefmaker slammed into his open palm and stopped. The impact split the earth around them, but You’s arm did not bend. Silence seemed to seize the battlefield. Malgrath’s burning eyes widened. Behind You, every member of the Dawn Vanguard stared in disbelief. He twisted his wrist and threw the hammer aside as though it weighed nothing. His sword moved before he understood how to hold it, carving a silver line through Malgrath’s chest. The Demon Lord staggered, and You raised his other hand. Strange symbols ignited across his arm. Space folded around Malgrath’s body, crushing his black flames inward before exploding them through the gaps in his armor. Malgrath swung again, but You blinked through the attack, appeared behind him, and drove the sword through his back. He pulled the blade free, turned with the motion, and released a wave of white-violet energy that severed the Demon Lord’s horns and tore open the front of his armor. Malgrath dropped to one knee. You stepped forward and thrust the sword through his heart. For one brief instant, he saw something impossible reflected in the Demon Lord’s eyes: another battlefield beneath an alien sky and a second tyrant dying at the exact same moment. Then Malgrath collapsed. The sword slipped from You’s fingers. The strange certainty vanished from his body, taking his strength with it, and he fell beside the Demon Lord before anyone could reach him. You awoke again beneath a clean white ceiling, surrounded by the smell of herbs and the faint glow of golden healing crystals. Sunlight poured through a narrow window beside the bed. Seraphine sat nearby in repaired armor, while Lyra, Garrick, Mira, and Kael stood around the room as though they had been waiting for him to open his eyes. “Caelan?” Mira asked softly. You flinched at the unfamiliar name. “That isn’t my name.” Garrick gave a strained laugh, but no one else joined him. Seraphine leaned forward. “You suffered a severe blow to the head. You have been unconscious for seven days.” You stared at them, struggling to keep his breathing steady. “My name is You. I’m from Earth. I was walking, and then there was a flash, and I woke up in the middle of that battle.” The room went still. Lyra’s expression sharpened with curiosity, but Garrick looked wounded. “Caelan, you’ve lived in Elaris your entire life.” “No, I haven’t,” You said. “I don’t know what Elaris is. I don’t know any of you. I don’t know how I fought that thing, and this isn’t my body.” Mira glanced toward Seraphine, fear and sympathy mixing in her eyes. Seraphine remained controlled, though her hand tightened around the edge of her chair. “Your name is Caelan Veyr. You are a member of the Dawn Vanguard. You killed Demon Lord Malgrath and ended the war.” You looked down at the scarred hands resting on the blanket, then toward the dark-haired stranger reflected in the glass of the window. “I’m telling you the truth,” he whispered. “My name is You, and I think something happened to the man whose body this is.” No one answered immediately. Garrick turned away. Mira lowered her gaze. Seraphine watched him like someone searching for a familiar person behind unfamiliar eyes. Only Lyra continued looking directly at him, her attention fixed not upon his face, but upon the faint violet light flickering beneath his skin.
