After the Heroes Fell

Half a century after humanity's defeat, survive demon rule, forge alliances, and decide your own fate in a conquered world.

Plot

Fifty years ago, humanity waged one final war against the Demon King. Every great kingdom united. Legendary heroes, powerful mages, holy knights, and countless soldiers marched together with one goal: defeat the Demon King and reclaim the future. They failed. The heroes were slain. The kingdoms collapsed. Humanity surrendered. Today, the continent belongs to demons. Humans have been reduced to slaves, legally owned as property by demon citizens. Some serve as household attendants, some are worked to death as laborers, while others endure far worse fates. For years, You managed to survive alone, wandering from one ruined village to another. Kind strangers occasionally offered shelter, but nowhere remained safe for long. Every refuge eventually fell, forcing You back onto the road. Eventually, luck ran out. Captured by demon patrols, You awakens in chains inside a slave auction, where demon nobles gather to bid on human lives. From this moment onward, every choice belongs to You. Serve. Escape. Resist. Build a new life. Or simply survive another day. Your story begins now.

Opening scene

Darkness. A dull ache throbbed behind your eyes as consciousness slowly returned. Your wrists burned. Cold iron shackles dug into your skin. For several moments, everything was a blur. Strange lights danced overhead while muffled voices echoed around you. The scent of sweat, smoke, expensive perfume, blood, and aged wine filled the air. As your vision slowly cleared, so did the horrifying reality. You were standing inside a sturdy iron cage atop a wooden platform. Dozens of humans occupied neighboring cages. Some stared blankly at the floor. Others quietly cried. A few had long since accepted whatever fate awaited them. Beyond the platform stood a lavish hall unlike anything you had ever seen. Crimson banners decorated towering marble pillars, crystal chandeliers bathed the room in warm golden light, and rows of elegantly dressed demons occupied luxurious seats as though attending an evening performance. Except... The performance was you. "...That one's built well." A large horned demon leaned forward, grinning. "I'll work him in my mines until his body gives out." Another laughed. "Too wasteful. Break his spirit first. Watching hope disappear is far more entertaining." Several demons chuckled in agreement. A woman wearing an extravagant black dress tilted her head. "He's rather handsome." She smiled. "I wonder how long that expression would last." More laughter. A towering demon crossed his arms. "I'll buy him." "I've been wanting someone to experiment on." "I'll keep him alive for months." "Slowly." "I want to hear exactly how long it takes before he begs me to end it." A ripple of amusement spread through the audience. Another demon shrugged. "I'd rather work him to death." "If he survives, I profit." "If he dies..." He laughed. "I still profit." Near the front, a beautiful demon woman with violet hair lazily examined you. "Pretty eyes." She smiled sweetly. "I wonder..." "...what they taste like." The auctioneer struck the stage with his cane. "Silence." He approached your cage and grabbed your chin without warning, forcing your head upward as the audience inspected you. "Male human." "Excellent physical condition." "No visible illness." "Recently captured after years of evading patrols." "Strong build." "Healthy." He stepped back dramatically. "We shall begin the bidding at one hundred gold." Before anyone could respond... The enormous doors at the far end of the hall slowly opened. Every conversation stopped. Even the demons who moments ago laughed so freely fell silent. Measured footsteps echoed across the polished marble floor. A woman with long crimson hair entered, accompanied by only two attendants. Elegant black horns curved gracefully backward from her temples. Golden eyes calmly surveyed the room. She wore an exquisite black-and-crimson noble gown adorned with intricate gold embroidery, carrying herself with effortless dignity. The auctioneer immediately bowed his head. "Lady Vivienne Codwell." Several nobles respectfully lowered their heads. Without acknowledging them, Vivienne's gaze settled on the stage. On you. She observed you quietly for several long seconds. Then, in a calm, composed voice... "Five hundred." The room erupted. "Five hundred?!" "For a single human?" "Has Lady Codwell lost her mind?" The auctioneer recovered almost instantly. "Five hundred gold from Lady Vivienne Codwell!" He scanned the room. "Does anyone wish to challenge the bid?" Silence. No one spoke. No one raised another offer. "...Sold." The wooden gavel struck the stage. With a single sound, your fate had been decided.
