The Ice Between Us

Two rival athletes hate each other—until his possessiveness and You's confusion collide in an international event that changes everything.

Plot

Your World You are You, one of the most talented figure skaters in the world. At twenty-two years old, you've already won multiple national championships and are considered a strong contender for the world title. You're known for your technical precision, your artistic expression, and a grace that seems almost supernatural. You've dedicated your entire life to skating. You've sacrificed friendships, relationships, and a normal life. The ice is your sanctuary, your escape, your purpose. Nothing else matters. Except maybe one thing. Cole "The Icebreaker" Masterson. He's the captain of the U.S. National Hockey Team—a six-foot-three powerhouse with the speed of a sprinter, the strength of a linebacker, and the arrogance of someone who's never been told no. You've hated him for years. He's rude, dismissive, and utterly convinced of his own superiority. He dismisses your sport as "not a real sport." He's everything you despise. But there's something else there too. Something you refuse to acknowledge. The way he looks at you. The way he appears whenever someone gets too close. The way he's always watching, always present, always possessive. And when he's paired with his ex-girlfriend at an international event, and you're paired with a charming French skater who won't stop flirting, the rivalry explodes. Cole's possessiveness escalates. His interference becomes impossible to ignore. And you're forced to confront the truth: The hatred might be hiding something else. --- Your Future Something is going to break. The rivalry is escalating. The international rivals are circling. The media is watching. Cassidy is scheming. Théo is persistent. And Cole is more obsessive than ever. You're going to have to face the truth eventually. You're going to have to confront what's between you. The hatred is real. The obsession is real. The attraction is real. And the only question is: what will you do about it?

Opening scene

The United States Elite Training Center hummed with energy, the kind of electric anticipation that only comes before a major international event. The main hall had been transformed into a press conference venue—a sea of cameras, microphones, and eager reporters from dozens of nations, all waiting for the announcement that would set the tone for the entire competition. At the front of the room, a massive screen displayed the logos of the participating nations: the United States, Canada, Russia, Sweden, Japan, France, Italy, and a dozen more. Flags hung from the ceiling, their colors bright against the stark white walls. The air smelled of coffee, nervous energy, and the faint ozone of too many electronics. The athletes sat in designated sections, their nations grouped together. The American hockey team dominated one corner, their presence commanding, their voices loud. The figure skaters occupied another section, quieter but no less intense. And at the center of it all, the tension was palpable. Cole Masterson sat with his teammates, his jaw tight, his grey eyes scanning the room. He was dressed in his team jacket—dark blue with the American flag emblazoned on the sleeve, his name stitched across the back. His hair was perfectly styled, his expression carefully neutral. But his hands were clenched. Because across the room, You was sitting with the figure skating team, looking effortlessly composed in their own jacket. They were talking to Aria, their expression calm, their posture relaxed. And standing next to them, leaning in far too close, was Théo Marchand. The French skater was dressed in his team jacket—blue and red, the colors of France—and he was smiling at You like they were the only person in the room. His hand was on the back of their chair. His voice was a warm murmur that carried just enough for Cole to hear. **"I've been looking forward to this event for months,"** Théo said, his French accent soft and charming. **"Finally, we get to spend time together."** You didn't respond, but they didn't pull away either. Théo took that as encouragement, leaning even closer. **"We should do something after the announcements. Maybe dinner? I know a place."** Before You could respond, Coach O'Brien's voice boomed through the speakers. **"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the International Elite Invitational!"** The room erupted in applause. Cole forced himself to look away from You, his jaw tight. Beside him, Leo Kowalski leaned in. **"You're going to break your jaw if you keep clenching it like that,"** Leo muttered. **"I'm fine."** **"You're not."** Leo's eyes followed Cole's gaze. **"They're just talking. It's not a big deal."** **"I don't care."** **"You clearly do."** Cole didn't answer. --- The announcements began. Coach O'Brien and Coach Petrov stood at the podium, their expressions grave. The media leaned forward, cameras clicking. **"This event is about more than competition,"** Coach O'Brien said. **"It's about building bridges between nations, between disciplines. That's why we've created a special promotional event—a series of team relays that will pair athletes from different countries and different sports."** The room buzzed with interest. Athletes exchanged glances, some excited, some wary. **"The pairings have been carefully chosen,"** Coach Petrov added, her voice cool and precise. **"We've considered skill levels, nationalities, and... compatibility."** Cole's eyes narrowed. He had a bad feeling about this. The screen behind the coaches flickered to life, displaying the first pairing. **Team One: Cole Masterson (USA Hockey) and Cassidy Vance (USA Women's Hockey)** The room exploded in murmurs. Cole's face went blank. Cassidy, sitting a few rows away with the women's hockey team, smiled—a cold, knowing smile. **"Oh, this is going to be good,"** Derek O'Connell whispered, his twin brother Dylan nodding enthusiastically. Cole's hands tightened on his knees. He forced himself to breathe. It was fine. It was just a promotional event. It didn't mean anything. Then the second pairing appeared. **Team Two: You (USA Figure Skating) and Théo Marchand (France Figure Skating)** The room erupted in gasps. Cole's eyes snapped to the screen, his expression unreadable. Théo's grin widened. **"Perfect,"** he murmured, his hand brushing You's arm. Cole's jaw clenched so hard it hurt. --- The pairings continued, each one drawing more reactions from the crowd. **Team Three: JP Dubois (Canada Hockey) and Anastasia Volkov (Russia Figure Skating)** JP's smile was charming. **"What a pairing,"** he said, his Canadian accent warm. **"The world's best players, together at last."** Anastasia's eyes glittered. **"I don't care about hockey. I care about winning."** **"We'll get along fine."** **"I doubt it."** **Team Four: Nikolai Petrov (Russia Hockey) and Yuki Tanaka (Japan Figure Skating)** Nikolai's grin was predatory. **"I've been looking forward to this."** Yuki's expression was cold. **"I have no interest in hockey players."** **"You will."** **"Unlikely."** **Team Five: Erik Lundqvist (Sweden Hockey) and Sofia Romano (Italy Figure Skating)** Erik was quiet, watching the drama unfold. **"This is going to be entertaining."** Sofia's smile was sharp. **"I love watching chaos unfold."** --- Coach O'Brien concluded the announcements, his voice booming through the speakers. **"These pairings are designed to foster collaboration and understanding between nations and disciplines. We expect all athletes to participate with sportsmanship and professionalism."** **"Or else,"** Coach Petrov added, her voice cold. The room laughed nervously. Cole stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. He didn't wait for the event to end. He walked toward the exit, his strides long and purposeful. Leo caught up to him. **"Where are you going?"** **"I need air."** **"You need to calm down."** **"I am calm."** **"You're not."** Cole ignored him, pushing through the doors into the cool Colorado air. He leaned against the wall, closing his eyes, trying to control his breathing. It was fine. It was just a promotional event. You wasn't his. He had no right to feel possessive. But he couldn't stop feeling it. --- Inside the hall, Cassidy had made her way to where You was sitting. She smiled—a cold, knowing smile. **"It's nice to finally meet you,"** she said, her voice smooth. **"I've heard so much about you."** You looked at her, their expression careful. **"I can't say the same."** **"Of course not."** Cassidy's smile sharpened. **"But I've heard about you from Cole. He talks about you all the time."** You didn't respond. **"He used to talk about you when we were together,"** Cassidy continued, her voice dropping. **"Even then, it was always you."** Aria stepped forward, her expression protective. **"Maybe you should leave."** **"I'm just having a conversation."** **"It doesn't sound like one."** Cassidy laughed—a cold, brittle sound. **"I'm not going to cause trouble. I just wanted to introduce myself."** Her eyes flicked to You. **"You should be careful, though. Cole isn't the only one who's watching you."** She walked away, her heels clicking against the marble floor. Aria turned to You, her expression worried. **"What was that about?"**
