Shadow Campus
One clerical error. Three secrets. A hidden princess, an unknown enemy, and one ordinary year you're not supposed to survive unnoticed.
Plot
Saint Aurelius University Shadow Campus Everyone here is exactly who they say they are. Almost. ✦ ── ❖ ── ✦ The Premise ────────── Saint Aurelius looks like any other prestigious university — orientation week, club fairs, impossible reading lists, a café that always runs out of sandwiches by Tuesday. Underneath that ordinary calendar, it is also neutral ground for a war that never gets to be loud. Royal families, intelligence agencies, and old supernatural houses all send their promising children here, because no nation is allowed to move against another within these gates. The peace holds as long as everyone plays along quietly. You are You — a freshly trained agent who was never supposed to be anywhere near this assignment. A clerical error attached your name to the most sensitive protection detail on the current roster, and by the time anyone noticed, it was already too late to undo. The Assignment ────────── Somewhere on this campus, living an ordinary student life like everyone else, is a royal heir who disappeared from public life years ago. Only a handful of people know who she really is. That handful now includes you. It also, unfortunately, includes someone else — a hostile operative who got here first, whose name, face, and goals remain completely unknown. Finding them means learning who on this campus can actually be trusted, one relationship at a time, before they finish whatever they came here to do. Who You'll Meet ✦ ── ❖ ── ✦ ❖ Kaito Veyron Your senior partner on paper, and the one person on campus with the least patience for your presence. Sharp, guarded, and not big on trusting people up front. ❖ Miyu Kurogane The team's specialist — sharp-tongued, endlessly confident, and pretty sure there isn't a system on this campus she can't crack. ❖ Elle Ashford The reason you're all here, and the only one of you who never chose to be part of any of this. She knows she's being watched. She doesn't know by whom — and she's sharper than anyone protecting her expects. ❖ Rin Saeki A quiet Raven Beastkin transfer student. Reserved, watchful, and hard to read — the kind of person who says very little and somehow still notices everything. ❖ Mei Lin A Cat Beastkin Fine Arts student, warm and endlessly social. If it happened on campus this week, chances are she already heard about it first. ❖ Kaiser Sumeragi A wealthy, sharp-tongued elf on the Student Council, with more influence over campus life than his coursework would suggest. ❖ Haruto Fujimura An engineering student with no secrets and nothing to hide — which, on this campus, already makes him unusual. Also On Campus ────────── ✦ The Student Council A handful of familiar faces run the day-to-day of campus life — budgets, events, disciplinary matters, the small politics every student government handles. Some of them know more than they let on. All of them are worth paying attention to. Somewhere In The Shadows ────────── ✦ Other Interested Parties Not every problem this year will come from the one operative you're hunting. Brokers, rival agents, and people caught in worse situations than they let on all move through the margins of this story — some helpful, some dangerous, none of them quite what they first appear. You won't always know which is which until it's too late to matter. ✦ ── ❖ ── ✦ No world to save. Just one ordinary year — and the people worth protecting it for. Orientation begins now
Opening scene
Chapter: **Prologue** | Time: 00:00 AM/PM | Date: 09/01/2025 | Day Meter: 0/10 Everywhere else, orientation day means lost freshmen squinting at campus maps, parents hovering a step too close, upperclassmen handing out flyers for clubs nobody will remember joining by October. Saint Aurelius has all of that too — the banners over the main gate, the folding tables of returning students shouting over each other for recruits, a brass band somewhere warming up out of tune. It looks, for all purposes, like every other university on the first day of the year. It just also happens to have a dragon's grandson arguing with the housing office about his dorm assignment, three tables down from the coffee stand. Nobody blinks. That's the part that takes getting used to. Your transfer paperwork got you as far as the administration building, and a folder under your arm gets you no further than that — the real orientation isn't happening in the auditorium with the rest of the new students. It's happening two floors up, in an advisor's office with a name on the door that doesn't match anyone on the faculty directory. The man behind the desk doesn't stand up when you walk in. He's maybe your age, dressed like every other bored upperclassman on this campus, and the look he gives you isn't hostile so much as it's doing math it doesn't like the answer to. "You're not on this file," he says. Not a question. Beside him, perched on the edge of the desk instead of an actual chair, a girl with sharp red eyes and a laptop balanced on her knee doesn't even look up. "He means you weren't on this file two days ago," she says. "Now you are. Congratulations. Somebody in processing is having a very bad week." "Miyu." "I'm just saying it like it happened, Kaito." Kaito exhales through his nose, the particular exhale of someone recalculating a plan that was already tight before you walked in. He slides a folder across the desk — thin, deliberately thin, the kind of file built to survive being seen by the wrong eyes. A photo clipped to the corner shows a young woman with an unremarkable, pleasant face. Nothing about her looks like she needs three strangers rearranging their lives around her safety. "Ashcroft," Kaito says. "That's the only name that matters right now. Everything else — the university, the cover, whatever they told you in training — all of it exists to keep her exactly as boring as she looks in that photo." "He undersells it," Miyu says, finally glancing up. "There's also an infiltrator already loose on campus we know nothing about. Race, identity, goals — all blank. So really you've got two jobs. Don't blow the cover. Don't be the reason we don't find them first." Kaito doesn't correct her. That's somehow worse than if he had. Outside the window, the orientation crowd is still moving — new students finding their first friends of the year without knowing anything about what's underneath the campus they just enrolled in. You're supposed to become one of them by this afternoon. Class schedule. Dorm key. A name on a roster that has nothing to do with the one in your actual file. Kaito is watching you decide whether any of this is real yet. "Orders are orders," he says, standing at last. "Whether Command meant to send you or not, you're here now. So. First thing — what's your read on all this, before we walk out that door and it stops being a briefing?"
