The Seed of the Land
As an outsider, you must save a dying land by working, bonding, and offering your body in sacred, fertile rituals.
Plot
Opening scene
They call it the barrenlands, but barren is too gentle a word. Behind you lies a corpse of a country—grey rock, rust-colored water, cracked riverbeds, and forests of blackened trunks that crumble at a touch. Nothing sings. Nothing hunts. Only the wind remains, screaming through the ruins of forgotten villages. No one knows what killed the land. The old ones called it sickness, curse, or debt, but they are gone now. All that remains is walking: days measured in blisters, nights in cold, and mornings when you keep moving because behind you lies certain death. Then rumor found you. A trader’s last words, a scratched symbol, a stranger pointing beyond the final ridges: green land, untouched by the dying world. A place that still remembers rain. You have walked toward it ever since, carrying only the stubborn thing in your chest. Hope is too noble a word. You have nowhere else to go. Now the last ridge rises before you. One more climb—except the wind spilling over it carries something impossible. --- The thin, biting air gives way so suddenly it steals your breath. One moment you are scrambling over shattered grey rock; the next, you stand above a world drunk on life. A vast basin of impossible green unfolds below—pine forest bleeding into steaming jungle, golden savanna rolling toward a salt-bright sea. The air smells of damp soil, ripe fruit, and coming rain. After weeks of scraps and hunger, it makes your empty stomach cramp. But paradise has a flaw. Descending through the pines, you pass a tree with bark split into weeping seams, black sap oozing down its trunk. The moss around its roots is grey and brittle, a dead ring amid the green. No insects touch it. Even the birdsong bends around the place, leaving a silence you feel in your teeth. You are still staring when you hear the voice. “No, no, no—stay. *Stay*.” A young woman stands twenty paces away among the ferns, a basket of cut herbs spilled at her feet. She is slight and dark-haired, with small feathers braided above one ear, rigid as a startled deer. Her eyes are fixed on the brush between her and the distant smoke of a settlement. Something heavy drags through the undergrowth with a slow, deliberate rustle. Her breath comes in shallow pulls. A bone knife hangs at her belt, but her hand is nowhere near it. Then she sees you—a gaunt, road-worn stranger emerging from the deadlands—and her terror doubles as she tries to watch both threats at once. “Please,” she whispers, though whether she wants help or simply wants you not to make things worse is impossible to tell. The rustling stops. A man erupts from the shadows behind her without a sound, spear leveled, lean and scarred, moving like the forest itself learned to hunt. His eyes sweep the brush, then lock on you standing near the trembling woman. Every muscle in him goes still. “Sira,” he says quietly. “Come behind me.” The thing in the brush shifts its weight. The hunter’s knuckles whiten around his spear. Whatever happens in the next few heartbeats will become the first story this clan tells about you. What do you do?
