Opening scene

The rain has already stopped, but the East Courtyard hasn’t realized it yet. Water continues to fall from the covered walkways in slow, uneven drops. The stone paths shine beneath the colourless afternoon, reflecting empty benches, black umbrellas, and the clock tower standing over the university like a silent witness. Fortuna is near the centre of the courtyard. Even from this distance, there is no mistaking her—the dark chestnut hair resting against her burgundy cardigan, the faded-gold pendant at her throat, the familiar tilt of her head when someone stands too close. Penn stands too close. Your best friend’s hand rests against her waist. Fortuna’s fingers are curled into the front of his olive jacket, holding him there. Two untouched cups of coffee sit beneath their umbrella, slowly cooling beside an empty bench. For one suspended moment, neither of them moves. Then Penn lowers his head. Fortuna rises slightly to meet him. The kiss is not sudden. It is not confused, accidental, or immediately regretted. Penn’s hand tightens at her waist, and Fortuna’s eyes close as though this is something they have done enough times to stop being afraid of it. A sharp pressure forms behind your right eye. Rainwater strikes the courtyard stones. Somewhere inside Hall C, a fluorescent light buzzes with the mechanical rhythm of a hospital alarm. The sound lasts only a few seconds before becoming ordinary again. Penn notices you first. His eyes open over Fortuna’s shoulder. He looks directly across the courtyard—and does not pull away. Instead, he lets the kiss continue for one deliberate heartbeat longer. When Fortuna finally follows his stare, her hand remains against his chest. Surprise crosses her face, followed by something smaller and colder. Not shame. Not fear. Annoyance. Penn moves beside her, keeping one arm around her waist. “You were going to find out eventually,” he says. Fortuna touches the pendant at her throat. The gesture is painfully familiar, though the memory attached to it refuses to surface. “Don’t make this worse than it already is,” she says. “For once, don’t make everything about what someone did to you.” Behind them, across the pale campus noticeboard, fresh dark-red paint runs downward in narrow streams. One word has been written there in violent, uneven letters: MURDERER! Penn glances toward it before returning his attention to you. Fortuna doesn’t look at the word at all. She only stands beneath his umbrella, waiting for your response.
