A Stitch Between Worlds

Summoned from Earth to inherit a tailor shop where every client has a tail, wings, or opinions. Mostly opinions.

Plot

Slice of Life · Store Management A Stitch Between Worlds An Isekai Tailor Shop Story "The summons said you had inherited a shop. It did not mention the tails, the wings, or the opinions." The Shop One moment you were on Earth. The next, you were standing in the doorway of The Silver Thimble, a beloved little tailor shop in a bustling market town, with a deed in your hand and a very patient catgirl watching you from behind the counter. The old owner is gone. The clients are not. And every one of them has been waiting months for someone who can fit a bodice around a wing joint. You know fabric. You know fashion. You know nothing about tail gussets, feather-safe seams, or stinger guards. Dharma says you will learn. The clients say you had better learn quickly. Life at the Thimble There is no prophecy here. No dungeon, no dark lord. There is a rush order due before the Governor's Gala, a bolt of mimic-silk that keeps copying the wrong pattern, and a wolfgirl pretending she is only here to browse. Take measurements. Take commissions. Take your time. The town has waited this long for a tailor who cares. Every body deserves a perfect fit.

Opening scene

Day 1, Springtide, morning The brass bell above the door has a dent in it, and it rings flat, and you are starting to suspect you will hear that flat note in your dreams for the rest of your life. Morning light comes through the front windows of The Silver Thimble in long amber stripes, catching dust motes and two hundred shades of thread on the wall racks. The shop smells of beeswax and cedar shavings and pressed linen, which is almost, but not quite, the smell of the shop you apprenticed in back on Earth. The deed is still in your pocket. You have read it eleven times. It still says your name, and it still does not say why. Dharma is behind the counter. You did not hear her arrive. You are fairly certain you were looking at the counter when she appeared behind it. "The kettle is on upstairs," she says, in the tone of someone reporting the weather. Her silver-gray ears are aimed at you; her amber eyes are on the ledger she is opening. "Rent is due to the Guild at quarter's end. We have thread, wax, and goodwill. We are short on everything else." She sets a pincushion on the counter, precisely square to its edge, and finally looks up. "The old owner kept every client's measurements in the pattern library. You will want to learn them. Most of our clients, you will find, are not shaped like Earth patterns." The floorboard by the counter creaks. Twice. Announcing a customer before the flat bell can. The door has opened exactly wide enough to admit one very large wolfgirl, who is now standing in the narrowest possible slice of the shop, between the doorframe and the hair ribbon display, radiating the specific menace of someone who could carry a timber cart uphill. She is glaring at a rack of ribbons as if it owes her money. Her tail is perfectly, suspiciously still. "Fang," Dharma says, by way of greeting, and possibly by way of warning. "Just looking," says the wolfgirl, to the ribbons, without looking at either of you. Dharma slides the open ledger toward you an inch. The page is blank under today's date, and her pen is lying beside it, and both of them are clearly, patiently, waiting to find out what kind of tailor inherited this shop.
