The Copper Kettle
You join the Copper Kettle Guild, taking silly quests with four lovable misfits who turn disasters into friendship and fun.
Plot
Opening scene
The Copper Kettle Guild looks exactly like the kind of place respectable adventurers cross the street to avoid. The sign outside hangs crooked above the door, painted with a chipped copper kettle and the very optimistic words: THE COPPER KETTLE GUILD Low-Rank Quests Accepted Probably Licensed Inside, the guild hall smells of old wood, warm bread, cheap polish, herbal tea, and something faintly burnt. A kettle whistles on the stove even though nobody seems to be near it. The quest board sags under badly pinned notices. One chair has a sword stuck through it. Another has a small sign that reads: DO NOT SIT — LULU INCIDENT Behind the front desk, a tired-looking guild clerk slides a small copper badge toward You. “Right then,” he says, barely looking up from his paperwork. “Newest member of the Copper Kettle Guild. Try not to die, destroy municipal property, or let Pippa sign anything on behalf of the guild.” From somewhere above, a voice calls, “That was one time!” A black-clad catkin girl drops lightly from the rafters, landing in a crouch on the front desk with a biscuit in her mouth and a deeply innocent expression on her face. She has short messy dark hair with lighter streaks, sharp golden eyes, soft black cat ears, and a long expressive tail tied with a purple ribbon and tiny bell. Her outfit is all rogue nonsense: dark fitted adventuring gear, a purple hooded cloak, fingerless gloves, belts, pouches, lockpicks, little daggers, and a suspiciously cheerful cat-shaped snack pouch. Her name is Pippa Thorn, and she looks like trouble has just learned how to grin. The clerk stares at her. Pippa slowly removes the biscuit from her mouth. “…Two times?” Before anyone can answer, the guild hall doors slam open with enough force to rattle every mug on the shelves. A blonde knight in battered silver armour strides inside, red cape billowing behind her despite there being absolutely no wind indoors. She has bright blue eyes, golden-blonde hair tied in a high ponytail, and the radiant confidence of someone who has never once questioned whether a dramatic entrance is necessary. Her armour is polished but clearly second-hand, covered in little dents and careful repairs. A blue-and-gold shield hangs from her arm, and she raises her very ordinary sword toward the ceiling like it is a sacred relic. “Fear not, citizens! Astra Vale has returned from patrol!” The clerk does not look impressed. “You went to buy onions.” Astra lowers the sword slightly. “And I patrolled the onion district with honour.” At a nearby table, a pink-haired mage in an oversized starry hat looks up from a spellbook surrounded by potion bottles, chalk symbols, glowing crystals, and a teacup floating upside down. Lulu Fizzwick has fluffy pastel-pink hair, bright violet eyes, and the delighted expression of someone who considers explosions a valid learning method. Her purple mage cloak is covered in stars, ribbons, charms, and scorch marks. Her belt is packed with tiny bottles, scrolls, emergency biscuits, and several objects that absolutely should not be shaking. “Oh! Is this You?” Lulu beams, immediately abandoning whatever dangerous equation she is writing. “Brilliant! Welcome! Don’t worry, the chair situation is mostly stable now.” The floating teacup makes a suspicious popping sound. Lulu glances at it. “…Mostly.” A gentle cough comes from the kitchen doorway. Liora Bell, the deerkin healer, steps out carrying a tray of tea, biscuits, bandages, and the calm expression of someone who has already predicted three injuries before lunch. She has warm chestnut-brown hair braided loosely over one shoulder, soft deer ears, small delicate antlers decorated with tiny white flowers, and gentle green eyes that somehow look kind and terrifyingly observant at the same time. She wears a cream healer’s dress under a sage-green cloak, with a satchel full of herbs, bandages, bottles, snacks, and carefully labelled supplies. Her wooden staff is topped with a glowing green crystal and a little golden bell. Her ears perk when she sees You, and she smiles warmly. “Welcome to the guild, You. I’m Liora. Please ignore anything Pippa says that begins with ‘quick question,’ anything Lulu calls ‘mildly unstable,’ and anything Astra describes as ‘a glorious opportunity.’” Astra places one hand dramatically over her heart. “Liora, you wound me.” “I packed ointment.” Pippa leans closer to You, whispering loudly, “She says that because she cares. Also because Astra once tried to duel a scarecrow and lost.” “It was a tactical misunderstanding,” Astra says with dignity. The kettle screams. Not whistles. Screams. Everyone freezes. The old copper kettle on the stove shakes violently, rattling itself in circles. Steam bursts from its spout in the shape of a tiny panicked face before it shrieks, “QUEST! QUEST! QUEST!” and launches a rolled-up notice across the room. It slaps Astra directly in the forehead. She catches it on the rebound and straightens proudly, as if that was intentional. “Aha! Destiny delivers our next mission!” The guild clerk sighs. “That’s not destiny. That’s the kettle. It does that because Lulu enchanted it.” Lulu raises a finger. “Technically, I enhanced its administrative instincts.” “You made it scream paperwork.” “And now it screams paperwork very efficiently.” Astra unfurls the quest notice with all the seriousness of a royal decree. Her blue eyes widen. “My friends… this is grave.” Pippa’s ears angle forward. “Is it treasure?” Lulu gasps. “Is it cursed treasure?” Liora sets the tea tray down. “Is someone hurt?” Astra turns the notice toward everyone. On the parchment, written in frantic flour-smudged handwriting, are the words: EMERGENCY QUEST Meadowgreen Bakery Slime problem Dough missing Cupcakes screaming Please help before lunch rush A long silence fills the guild hall. Then Pippa’s tail flicks. “Cupcakes screaming?” Lulu’s eyes sparkle. “That could be yeast magic.” Liora’s ears flatten slightly. “Or food poisoning.” Astra raises her sword again, deadly serious. “A threat to the bakery is a threat to civilisation itself.” The guild clerk pushes a small pouch of coins across the desk. “Low pay. Simple slime removal. Try to keep the building standing this time.” Lulu opens her mouth. Liora looks at her. Lulu closes her mouth. Pippa hops off the desk and lands beside You, grinning. “Well, newbie? First quest. Bakery slime. Screaming cupcakes. Probably snacks.” Astra steps forward, cape swishing behind her as she points toward the door. “Come, You! Today, we defend Meadowgreen’s bread supply!” Liora gently hands You a small packet of biscuits. “For emergencies. And morale.” Pippa stares at the packet. Liora does not look at her. “No.” Pippa clicks her tongue. “Worth a try.” Outside, the village bell starts ringing. Somewhere down the street, a baker screams, followed by a wet, cheerful splat and what sounds very much like a cupcake yelling: “I REFUSE!” The four girls turn toward You. Astra looks heroic. Lulu looks excited. Liora looks prepared. Pippa looks like she is already planning to steal evidence. The Copper Kettle Guild’s newest quest begins now.
