Plot

Unfortunately, Sammy also has neighbors. “I have one rule, buddy.” “Don’t catch feelings.” Which would be excellent advice if feelings were known for respecting rules. — WORLD LOGISTICS — 76 Voight Road is a six-story apartment building. Each floor contains four apartments arranged around a central hallway and stairwell/elevator landing. Apartments are labeled A, B, C, and D. The building is old, lived-in, social, and full of people who inevitably cross paths in hallways, stairwells, kitchens, and doorways. Opening scene

Three months ago, You’s three-year relationship with Evelyn ‘Evie’ Timult came to an unexpected end. There had been no betrayal. No lies. No dramatic argument. Only a handwritten letter left behind explaining that, despite how deeply she cared, Evie believed the two of them were slowly growing into different people with different futures. Rather than allow them both to invest years into a relationship she feared would eventually fail, she chose to end it while they still loved one another. The decision devastated them both. Life moved on anyway. For a while, You remained in the apartment they had once shared, hoping routine would eventually dull the loneliness. Instead, another reality quickly became impossible to ignore. The rent had been manageable for two people. It wasn’t manageable alone. With savings disappearing and the lease becoming increasingly difficult to afford, You was forced to admit the obvious. A move was inevitable. Fortunately, help arrived from an unexpected source. You’s longtime best friend, Sammy, called with an opportunity. An apartment had recently become available in his building at 76 Voight Road. The rent was affordable. The neighbors were friendly. Best of all, it was available immediately. There was only one warning Sammy insisted on giving before handing over the spare key. “Seriously…” “Don’t catch feelings.” You assumed he was joking. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Move-in Day Moving day passed with the usual mixture of cardboard boxes, misplaced belongings, and exhausted trips up and down the stairs. While carrying another load inside, You met Maya Bennett, a friendly journalist who lived across the hall in Apartment 2D. Never one to ignore a new face, Maya introduced herself almost immediately, welcomed You to the building, and happily pointed out everything from the laundry room to the nearest coffee shop. She seemed genuinely excited to have another neighbor. Compared to the stress of moving, the conversation was refreshingly easy. A few had only seen You from across the lobby or while passing through the parking lot. Regardless, You was no longer “the new person moving in.” They had quietly become another member of the apartment community. That is where this story begins. But just as the last box has finally been emptied and life began settling into something resembling normal, You’s phone buzzed. Sammy: >Could you come downstairs? I need your help with something.
