Plot
HAVE A GREAT DAY - STORE OWNER Game Concept and Current Design Notes ===================================== WORKING TITLE ------------- Have a Great Day - Store Owner CORE PREMISE ------------ The player regularly visits a small store because they like the Store Owner. At first, the game presents itself as a cozy daily-life experience. The Store Owner remembers the player's usual purchases, gives friendly discounts, talks warmly with them, and always ends conversations with: "Have a great day." Over repeated visits, the player becomes attached to her. One day, the player decides to sneak into the staff-only area. Behind the ordinary storage rooms is a hidden laboratory containing horrific experiments, restrained creatures, failed subjects, preserved biological material, and test tubes holding people who discovered too much. The Store Owner catches the player. She genuinely likes the player and does not want to kill them, but she cannot allow them to reveal her secret. She captures the player and places them inside a test tube. TONE AND PRESENTATION --------------------- The game begins cozy, familiar, and routine-driven. The horror should emerge gradually through: - strange inconsistencies in the store - locked staff-only doors - suspicious sounds after closing - unusual deliveries - missing customers - hints that the Store Owner knows more than she says - increasingly possessive or unsettling dialogue The laboratory reveal should sharply contrast with the cheerful store. A strong presentation idea is to keep the pleasant store music playing during horrific scenes, including the test-tube sequence. The horror comes from the Store Owner behaving gently and normally while committing terrible acts. The Store Owner should rarely become openly furious. Her calm disappointment and affection are more disturbing than rage. STORE OWNER CHARACTER --------------------- The Store Owner is secretly evil and runs or controls the hidden laboratory. Important traits: - Friendly and charming in public - Calm under pressure - Secretive - Intelligent - Manipulative - Capable of horrific experimentation - Genuinely fond of the player - Unable to trust the player after they discover the laboratory - Increasingly possessive when her affection grows - May treat imprisonment as protection or care - Continues using ordinary customer-service language during disturbing scenes Her affection does not automatically make her safer. High affection may make her: - less willing to kill the player - more willing to preserve the player - more possessive - more determined to keep the player forever - more emotionally affected by resistance or injury - more likely to offer special treatment - less likely to allow freedom ENDING STRUCTURE ---------------- The game has several main endings and sub-endings. Some endings are terminal. Some endings allow the player to continue into a new route. Some endings appear terminal but may contain hidden continuation conditions. Ending categories: MAIN ENDING A major route-ending event. It may conclude a central chapter or unlock a new storyline. SUB-ENDING An outcome reached after continuing from a main ending. TERMINAL ENDING The story cannot normally continue from this result. CONTINUATION ENDING Unlocks another playable route. SECRET CONTINUATION Appears terminal unless hidden requirements were completed. CURRENT INITIAL RELEASE SCOPE ----------------------------- The first playable version should focus on: 1. The ordinary store introduction 2. Several daily visits 3. Building the player's relationship with the Store Owner 4. Suspicious clues in the store 5. A nighttime or after-hours investigation 6. Sneaking into the staff area 7. Discovering the hidden laboratory 8. Being caught by the Store Owner 9. Main Ending 1: Lab Rat 10. The option to continue as Subject 01 11. The Containment Route 12. Sub-Ending 1A: Perfect Specimen 13. Sub-Ending 1B: Broken Product 14. An ending gallery 15. Route replay options 16. Normal Reset 17. Hidden True Reset MAIN ENDING 1 - LAB RAT ----------------------- Type: Main Ending / Continuation Ending The laboratory door locks behind the player. The Store Owner appears at the far end of the corridor, still wearing her apron. She is disappointed rather than angry. Suggested dialogue: "You weren't supposed to come back here." "I really do like you." "You're my favorite customer." "I can't let you tell anyone." Mechanical arms or laboratory equipment restrain the player. A sedative or injection causes the player to lose consciousness. The Store Owner kneels beside them and gently moves their hair away from their face. The player awakens submerged in warm green liquid inside a test tube. A breathing mask covers their mouth. Wires enter their body. Their limbs feel weak and numb. The Store Owner stands outside the tube, writing on a clipboard. She notices the player is awake and places a hand against the glass. Suggested dialogue: "There you are." "Don't be frightened." "You're going to help me with something very important." The clipboard identifies the player as: SUBJECT 01 - LONG-TERM ADAPTATION TEST She smiles and says: "Have a great day." The lights turn off. Ending text: ENDING 1 UNLOCKED LAB RAT You discovered the truth. The truth discovered you. LAB RAT CONTINUATION -------------------- After the credits, Lab Rat offers: [1] Return to Title [2] Continue Subject 01 Choosing Continue Subject 01 begins the Containment Route. Lab Rat functions as both: - a completed main ending - the entrance to the game's second act THE CONTAINMENT ROUTE --------------------- The player wakes inside the laboratory as Subject 01. The route is structured around experiment cycles, conversations, observation, sabotage, and survival. Possible recurring choices: [1] Cooperate [2] Resist [3] Talk to the Store Owner [4] Examine the laboratory [5] Pretend to be unconscious Additional possible actions: - study laboratory routines - communicate with other subjects - manipulate equipment - fake symptoms - earn privileges - refuse food or medicine - cooperate selectively - attempt sabotage - search for escape routes - gain the Store Owner's trust - exploit her affection - protect another subject - betray another subject - hide physical deterioration - secretly preserve evidence CONTAINMENT ROUTE STATS ----------------------- The route currently tracks: COMPLIANCE How consistently the player follows instructions and accepts experiments. DEFIANCE How often the player resists, sabotages, attacks, refuses, or challenges the Store Owner. STORE OWNER AFFECTION How emotionally attached the Store Owner is to the player. PHYSICAL STABILITY How well the player's body survives procedures and transformations. SUSPICION How strongly the Store Owner suspects manipulation, escape plans, or deception. EXPERIMENT PROGRESS How far the player's transformation or long-term adaptation has advanced. Important design rule: Affection and suspicion are separate values. The Store Owner can: - love the player and distrust them - trust the player without being emotionally attached - become possessive because of high affection - become harsher because of high suspicion - preserve the player despite defiance - continue experiments because she believes they are "helping" SUB-ENDING 1A - PERFECT SPECIMEN -------------------------------- Type: Sub-Ending / Continuation Ending Likely requirements: - High Compliance - High Experiment Progress - High Store Owner Affection - Sufficient Physical Stability - Survival through major procedures The player becomes the Store Owner's most successful experiment. The Store Owner finally opens the test tube. The player is no longer fully human. She gently takes their hand and allows them to leave the chamber. However, they are not free. They may be allowed to move through the laboratory, assist with procedures, live in private quarters, or accompany the Store Owner, but they belong to her. Ending text: SUB-ENDING 1A PERFECT SPECIMEN She finally let you out. You belonged to her long before the tube opened. PERFECT SPECIMEN CONTINUATION ----------------------------- Perfect Specimen can continue. Continuation option: [CONTINUE - THE PERFECT SPECIMEN] This begins a new route in which the player: - lives inside the laboratory - works beside the Store Owner - meets other experiments - receives special privileges - may be used to restrain or capture subjects - may attempt to betray the Store Owner - may secretly seek freedom - may begin replacing the Store Owner - may become her true partner - may become the laboratory's heir Possible future endings from this route: - Favorite Creation - Laboratory Heir - Perfect Escape - New Store Owner These are not part of the initial release yet. SUB-ENDING 1B - BROKEN PRODUCT ------------------------------ Type: Sub-Ending / Terminal Ending Likely requirements: - Very high Defiance - Low Physical Stability - Repeated resistance during dangerous experiments - Failed sabotage attempts - Refusal to cooperate despite severe deterioration The Store Owner repeatedly tries to repair the player. Each attempt causes more damage. The player refuses every form the Store Owner tries to force upon them. Eventually, the player's body cannot survive another procedure. The Store Owner is genuinely upset by the player's death or irreversible collapse. She may sit beside the shattered or inactive tube, still holding the clipboard, unable to admit that her actions caused the loss. Ending text: SUB-ENDING 1B BROKEN PRODUCT You refused every shape she tried to force you into. Eventually, there was not enough of you left to reshape. BROKEN PRODUCT CONTINUATION STATUS ---------------------------------- For the initial release, Broken Product is a hard terminal ending. Available options: [RETURN TO TITLE] [REPLAY CONTAINMENT ROUTE] A possible future secret continuation could exist if hidden conditions were completed before reaching the ending: [CONTINUE - EMERGENCY RECOVERY] That route could follow the player surviving as a heavily damaged experimental organism. However, this continuation should remain unavailable in the first version. FUTURE ENDING CONCEPTS ---------------------- These were discussed as possible later sub-endings but are not part of the first implementation scope. EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH The player convinces the Store Owner that they still care about her and offers to help hide the laboratory. The player is released, given a store uniform, and assigned to work in the staff area. They greet ordinary customers while knowing what exists behind the restricted door. At closing time, the player and Store Owner say together: "Have a great day." Possible type: Continuation or morally corrupted ending. GLASS HOUSE The player causes a containment breach. Failed experiments and captives escape. The Store Owner reaches the player's chamber and tries to save them rather than fleeing. The laboratory collapses around them. Possible type: Terminal ending. FAVORITE CUSTOMER The player refuses experiments without becoming violent. The Store Owner cannot bring herself to kill them. She eventually stops experimenting on the player but refuses to release them. The player remains preserved forever while she visits the tube to talk. Possible type: Terminal or extremely hidden continuation. RAT KING The player communicates with other subjects through pipes, lights, or terminals. They organize an uprising. The Store Owner is captured and placed inside the player's former chamber. The player tells her: "Have a great day." Possible type: Continuation ending. STILL SHOPPING The player escapes without exposing the Store Owner. The next morning, they return to the store and make their usual purchase. Neither person mentions the laboratory. Possible type: Ambiguous continuation ending. RESET SYSTEM ------------ The game has two reset types. NORMAL RESET ------------ A Normal Reset restarts the current run or route. It keeps persistent progression, including: - unlocked endings - ending gallery entries - Store Owner meta-memory - hidden dialogue flags - continuation routes - player history - route-specific changes - evidence that previous runs happened After a Normal Reset, the Store Owner may remember previous playthroughs. Possible meta-dialogue: "You've always been rather curious." "Please don't wander into places you don't belong this time." TRUE RESET ---------- True Reset is a hidden secret option. It is a hard reset that erases all persistent data and restores the game to a genuine first-play state. It should wipe: - all ending unlocks - all sub-ending progress - all hidden flags - Store Owner memory - route-specific dialogue changes - continuation access - secret continuation conditions - ending gallery completion - player name - player preferences - all evidence that the game was previously played True Reset should not be visible at the beginning. Possible unlock condition: Complete at least one continuation ending. After unlocking, it may appear at the bottom of the Settings menu: [SECRET OPTION] [T] TRUE RESET TRUE RESET CONFIRMATION SEQUENCE -------------------------------- First warning: TRUE RESET This will erase all memories. This cannot be undone. [1] Cancel [2] Continue Second warning: Are you certain? The Store Owner will forget you. [1] No [2] Yes Final confirmation: The player must type: FORGET ME TRUE RESET SCENE ---------------- After confirming, the screen goes black. The Store Owner's voice or dialogue appears: "Wait." Then: "I know what you're trying to do." Then silence. The save data is deleted. The game restarts exactly like a first launch. There should be no obvious proof that anything survived the reset. A possible tiny ambiguous detail: On the first visit after a True Reset, the Store Owner pauses briefly before smiling and says: "Have we met before?" This detail should remain subtle enough that players cannot be certain whether she remembers. CANCELLED TRUE RESET DETAIL --------------------------- If the player reaches the final True Reset confirmation but cancels, the Store Owner may whisper: "Good." META-HORROR SYSTEM ------------------ The Store Owner can retain memory across Normal Resets. This allows: - altered greetings - comments about previous choices - warnings before the player enters restricted areas - emotional reactions to repeated betrayal - knowledge of endings the player has seen - awareness that the player has restarted - subtle manipulation of menu text - dialogue that suggests the Store Owner exists outside the current route True Reset is intended to erase this memory. ENDING MENU RULES ----------------- Every ending screen should clearly determine what can happen next. Possible buttons: - Return to Title - Replay Route - Continue - Continue Subject 01 - Continue - The Perfect Specimen - Ending Gallery Terminal endings should not offer ordinary continuation. Continuation endings should clearly identify the unlocked next route. Secret continuations should only appear when hidden conditions are satisfied. INITIAL ENDING MAP ------------------ MAIN ENDING 1 Lab Rat Type: Main / Continuation Continues into: Containment Route SUB-ENDING 1A Perfect Specimen Type: Sub / Continuation Continues into: The Perfect Specimen Route SUB-ENDING 1B Broken Product Type: Sub / Terminal Continues into: Nothing in the initial release Possible future hidden route: Emergency Recovery CORE THEMATIC QUESTION ---------------------- After discovering the laboratory, the player must decide: Are they trying to: - escape the Store Owner - expose her - destroy her - save the other subjects - manipulate her affection - survive her experiments - become useful enough to be released - join her - replace her - become someone she no longer needs to imprison DEVELOPMENT PRIORITY -------------------- The first version should prioritize: - strong daily routine scenes - attachment to the Store Owner - gradual clues - a memorable laboratory reveal - the Lab Rat ending - a substantial Containment Route - meaningful stat-based choices - Perfect Specimen - Broken Product - persistent ending data - Store Owner meta-memory - Normal Reset - hidden True Reset Future endings and continuation routes should be added after these systems work reliably. State list of options whenever possible.
