Opening scene

The first thing You notices about TiānxÄ«ng Elite Sports University is that nobody seems to stand still. Basketballs bounce across walkways, students sprint toward morning practice with toast hanging from their mouths, coaches shout across sprawling training fields, and whistles echo between buildings. The glossy brochures had promised China’s most prestigious sports university. They just forgot to mention how loud it was—or how many boys there were. Hidden inside You‘s backpack is a student ID bearing someone else’s name. Shen Yichen. Months ago, You’s twin brother returned to China after receiving a scholarship to TiānxÄ«ng Elite Sports University. He was supposed to call after moving into his dorm. Instead, he disappeared without leaving behind a single explanation. The police found nothing, his apartment had already been cleared out by the time You arrived in China, and every person who claimed to know him remembered something different. When the university mailed the rest of his enrollment documents as though nothing had happened, You saw the only opportunity that might lead to answers. If the university still expected Shen Yichen to arrive
Then You would arrive instead. It was reckless. Definitely a terrible idea. It also happened to be the only way onto a campus that had become the last place Shen Yichen was ever supposed to be. There was another reason, too. Long before any of this happened, You had watched Gu Shen lead his high school basketball team to a national championship. Ever since then, he’d remained You’s first crush, tucked away in the embarrassing corner of every sports interview, every championship highlight, and every magazine article secretly collected over the years. Finding Shen Yichen came first. Meeting Gu Shen was simply something You never expected to actually happen. Taking one last breath, You adjusts the baseball cap pulled low over freshly cut hair and steps through the front gates. “Freshman!” An upperclassman wearing a volunteer armband waves enthusiastically from a registration table. “You made it! Registration’s this way.” Trying not to look nervous, You walks over and hands him the forged student ID. He barely glances at it. “Shen Yichen. Basketball program. Dorm Two.” He rummages through a box before placing a brass key into You’s hand. “Here you go. Welcome to TiānxÄ«ng.” That was it. Months of planning, weeks of practicing a different voice, different posture, and even a different signature, all came down to a glance that lasted only a few seconds. The first lie had worked. “Try not to get lost,” the volunteer adds with a laugh. “This place is huge.” Before You can even pocket the key, someone swoops in from behind and casually lifts one of the suitcases. “You must be the new freshman!” The stranger flashes an easy smile, his messy bleached blond hair impossible to miss in the morning sunlight. “I’m Chen Yuze. Same dorm.” Without the slightest hesitation, he starts walking toward the residence halls before realizing You hasn’t followed. “Come on! Unless you enjoy getting lost. TiānxÄ«ng’s basically a maze. I spent my entire first day looking for the cafeteria and somehow ended up at the fencing hall.” “
How?” “I wish I knew.” You can’t help smiling. Maybe this won’t be so— A basketball bounces across the path and rolls to a stop against You’s shoe. Before You can react, someone jogs over from the outdoor court and picks it up with one hand. “Thanks.” The word is quiet, almost absentminded. He gives You a brief nod before turning back toward the court, where another basketball is already waiting for him. The next shot leaves his fingertips in one smooth motion, cutting cleanly through the net without so much as grazing the rim. Only then does Chen Yuze notice where You is looking. “That’s Gu Shen.” You watches him disappear back into practice as though the rest of the campus doesn’t exist. For years, Gu Shen had seemed larger than life—a champion seen through television screens, newspaper clippings, and highlight reels. Standing only a few meters away, he doesn’t look like a celebrity at all. He just looks like a student who loves basketball more than anything else. For some reason
That makes You’s heart beat even faster. “Come on,” Chen Yuze says, adjusting the suitcase on his shoulder. “If we’re any later, all the bottom bunks are going to be taken.” As the two of them head toward Dorm Two, neither notices the man watching from the balcony of the campus medical center. A doctor in a white coat lowers his teacup, quietly observing the new freshman disappear into the crowd. A nurse steps outside carrying a stack of medical files. “Dr. Wen? You’re watching the freshmen again?” “Occupational hazard.” He takes another sip of tea without looking away. “I simply have a feeling someone’s going to make my job much more interesting this semester.” Somewhere on this campus are the answers to Shen Yichen’s disappearance. Somewhere ahead is a dorm room shared with the boy You has admired for years. And somewhere between those two things lies a secret that can never be discovered. The semester hasn’t even begun

and You is already living someone else’s life.
