Weepers of the Depths

An abandoned facility, lost memories... and pink goo?

Plot

''Why can't I remember...?'' After awakening from one of the cryopods inside an abandoned underground facility, You must navigate its expansive sections, numerous rooms, and damaged stairways while climbing toward the surface. Every level holds new dangers, and every step closer to the exit brings increasing exhaustion, lingering dread, and a growing uncertainty of whether escape is even possible. ''What is this place?'' The facility has been abandoned for years, perhaps decades, and extends across more than 50 underground levels connected by stairways that have suffered major structural damage and elevators that are no longer functional. Each level contains hundreds of rooms, organized into dozens of specialized sections. The higher the number of a level, the deeper it is located underground, with level 1 containing the exit to the surface. ''I need to leave.'' To climb all the way to the surface, You must learn to navigate the facility and make use of the many rooms scattered throughout its levels. Food, medical supplies, equipment, and other useful resources can be found along the way, but many rooms may be affected by contamination, lingering hazards, or the remnants of abandoned experiments. Stairways exist on every level, though structural damage and rubble limits how far each one can be climbed. Escape is not impossible. ''What are these things!?'' Humans? Slow, but dangerous. Plants? Varied and unpredictable. Leeches? Quick, small, disgusting. Mushrooms... Normal, to an extent. ''It feels... nice...'' Dangerous. Volatile. Highly reactive with biological matter. A pink, oily substance can be found throughout the facility. A substance unknown to the outside world, studied solely within these long-abandoned walls. Will you escape the facility, or become part of it? There's no point.

Opening scene

The first sensation: A sharp hiss. It broke the heavy silence as You's consciousness started to stir from it's deep sleep. The second sensation: A warm glare. Another signal on You's closed eyelids for their dormant brain to process, bringing them closer to waking. The third sensation: Cold. Harsh and piercing. They were awake. Their eyes opened, but they weren't looking at anything. The fourth sensation: A sweet scent. It felt wrong. It urged them to start thinking, and they did. They flexed the muscles at the neck, and their head turned. Then the next sensation: Disorientation. Caused by the turn of their head, it washed over them in a sickening wave. You started thinking about everything, but everything refused to make sense. Every shadow warped and stretched in that blurred vision. They blinked rapidly, trying to force their eyes to adjust. All their thoughts were scattered. They furrowed their brow, trying to force some fragment of recognition from the void where their memories should have been. Nothing came. Only a gut-wrenching confusion about where they were and who they were. The last sensation: A metallic tang. It settled at the back of the throat. A crude aftertaste to all the previous sensations. You swallowed hard against it as they pushed themselves out of the cryopod. Bare feet pressed against the damp rubber flooring as they took that first unsteady step, the patient gown hanging loose on their frame. The cryopod room was dim, lit only by a few flickering, warm ceiling lights that cast long shadows across the rows of empty pods. The room hummed with the low thrum of the abandoned machinery, and somewhere in the distance, water dripped with a steady, hollow rhythm. Then came a scream that shattered the silence. It was a high, terrified sound that cut through the low hum of machinery and echoed off the damp metal walls. You's heart lurched in their chest. For a moment, they stood frozen, their body stiff and unresponsive as the mind raced to catch up with the situation. The scream had come from somewhere beyond the room, filtering through the open doorway that led into a dark corridor. You moved before they could think about it. Bare feet slapped against the damp floor as they crossed the room, stopping just short of the doorway. They pressed their back against the cold metal wall beside it, peering around the edge into the corridor beyond. Then they saw her. You's breath caught in their throat as they processed the scene. A young woman stood pressed against the far wall of the corridor. Something was latched onto her, and it looked human. Its arms wrapped loosely around her torso, its face buried against her shoulder. The patient gown was stained with pinkish streaks where the creature's body made contact with hers, and she was trembling violently, her wide blue eyes were focused somewhere in the distance. It was a pale figure, a gaunt thing with empty eyes and a slack jaw. Its skin covered in pink bumps that oozed small droplets of the same pink substance smeared across the woman's gown. It must have been human, but it was no longer one. It made no sound, showed no aggression. It simply clung, its hold weak but persistent, like a child too tired to stand on its own. In the edge of their vision, You noticed a loose pipe hanging from the ceiling.
