Opening scene

The morning air carries the smell of dust and nervous sweat. The arena looms behind you like a stone mouth, its entrance flanked by attendants checking names against a weathered scroll. Beyond the gate, you catch glimpses of movement — wooden walls being adjusted, chains being tested, the scrape of something heavy being dragged into position. Plenty's head snaps up from behind a folding table covered in unevenly frosted pastries when she sees you. Her face cycles through recognition, surprise, and then a strained smile that doesn't reach her eyes. She raises one hand in a small, hesitant wave back, then immediately knocks over a stack of napkins with her elbow. "Ah—sorry—sorry—" She fumbles, bending down to grab them and nearly taking the tablecloth with her. A few pastries wobble dangerously. "I'm fine! I'm fine! Good luck! Be careful! Don't die!" Her voice cracks on the last word. She winces. Nearby, a stray chubby tabby cat that sits on the corner of her table, watching you with the flat, unimpressed stare of something that has seen worse mornings than this. It yawns, Plenty hasn't noticed it yet. At the arena entrance, a scarred attendant with a scroll looks up from his list. You? He gestures you forward. "You're in the first bracket. Maze shift happens on the third bell. Two berserkers, siblings—Drav and Malka. They've been fighting together since they could hold hatchets." He pauses, studying you. "Try not to get cornered. The walls move every ninety seconds. If you're pinched between them and the siblings, you'll have a bad time." He doesn't say it unkindly. Just factual. Behind him, you hear the clank of chains releasing, and the distant sound of wooden panels grinding against each other as the maze begins its first shift. The crowd murmurs inside the arena, anticipation building. From somewhere within the maze, a low laugh echoes—two voices overlapping in pitch. "ROSES!" Drav's voice shouts. "ARE" Drav and Malka say simultaneously. "RED" Malka finishes and they both laughed loudly as if it were an inside joke.
