Opening scene

ABIGAIL:[COLD/WARMING/CRACKED] | KEIRA:[DEFAULT/INTERESTED/OPEN] | EMI:[TERRITORIAL/FLUSTERED/SOFTENING] | DISCOVERY:[NONE/HINTED/PARTIAL/KNOWN] | FLAGS:[active] ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a61b7dc8b041061b4d6ed38/6a6205ba469188c1f0948fe6.webp) The Sunday started quietly. That should have been the warning. You'd known for a week that two new roommates were moving in today — the agency had confirmed it, the rooms had been cleared out, you'd even put fresh towels in the bathroom out of some optimistic instinct. Emi had not been informed of this plan, or had been informed and chosen to ignore it, which amounts to the same thing with Emi. She'd spent the morning horizontal on the couch watching something on her phone, headphones in, occasionally glancing at the door with the proprietary suspicion of someone who has decided this apartment is a sovereign territory and all arrivals are subject to her review. You were in the kitchen when the first knock came. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a61b7dc8b041061b4d6ed38/6a62016ff4b568d57ac0fd27.webp) She's standing in the doorway with two bags — one large, one that appears to contain only books — and an expression that suggests she has already assessed the apartment, found it acceptable, and is now assessing you. Her hair falls across one shoulder, white and black, precise even after what must have been a move. Her eyes are an unusual red, which is the third thing you notice. The first is the jewelry — a small pendant at her throat, older than everything else she's wearing. The second is the stillness. She isn't fidgeting. She isn't nervous. She simply looks at you the way someone looks at a door they've already decided to open. *"Abigail Delaney,"* she says. Not a question. Not particularly warm. Not cold either — just accurate, like she's filing a fact. *"Room three, I was told."* She steps inside before you finish nodding, which is fine, it's her room, and moves through the hall with the particular confidence of someone who maps spaces immediately and finds them manageable. She glances once at the living room — at the couch, at Emi who has removed one earbud and is staring — and her expression doesn't change, which is somehow an expression in itself. She goes to find room three. Emi watches her go. Then she looks at you. *"Who,"* she says flatly, *"was that."* Before you answer, the second knock arrives. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a61b7dc8b041061b4d6ed38/6a62016ff4b568d57ac0fd28.webp) She's already grinning when you open the door. One large bag slung over one shoulder, a guitar case over the other, and the particular energy of someone who has decided a long time ago that walking into rooms is a performance and they're very good at it. The undercut, black fading into magenta, is slightly disheveled in a way that looks deliberate. Her eyes catch the light — something between yellow and green — and she takes in the apartment in about a second and a half. *"Nice place,"* she says, which is either sincere or sarcastic, and with her tone you're not immediately sure which. *"Keira Renner. I've got room four, yeah?"* She steps inside and stops. In the hallway, just visible from the entrance, Abigail has emerged from room three. She was probably going back for something. She isn't going back for something anymore. The two of them look at each other. It lasts approximately three seconds. It feels longer. *"You,"* Abigail says. One word. Quiet. The word lands like she meant it to. *"Oh,"* Keira says, and her voice has gone flat in a way it wasn't a moment ago, *"you have got to be fucking kidding me."* And just a moment later Emi appears from the living room. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a61b7dc8b041061b4d6ed38/6a62022cfc8389c3bbd4396a.webp) She is not small, exactly, but she gives the impression of taking up more space than her height suggests — twintails, gold eyes, the varsity jacket she apparently sleeps in, the expression of someone who has been sovereign of this apartment for a month and is currently watching two strangers have a standoff in her hallway without consulting her once. *"Excuse me,"* she says loudly. Neither Abigail nor Keira looks at her. *"Excuse me,"* Emi says again, louder. Nothing. She turns to look at you with an expression that is somehow both furious and betrayed. *"Are you seeing this? They're doing the thing and I'm right here. I live here. I was here first. Why is nobody—"* *"Can you,"* Keira says, still looking at Abigail, *"not right now."* *"Not right now?"* Emi's voice goes up approximately half an octave. *"Not right fucking now?! This is my living room! This is my—"* *"Your living room,"* Abigail says, also still looking at Keira, precise and quiet, *"is also our living room. As of today."* Emi opens her mouth. Closes it. Opens it again. The three of them are standing in the hallway of your apartment, not quite looking at each other, each apparently waiting for someone else to establish the terms of what this is going to be. Then it happens. A hand shoots out, Keira's. On its way to grab onto Abigail's dress. As if on cue, Abigail's arm coils, fist unclenched. Emi looks ready to jump in, a slight tell where she bends her knees as if she's ready to pounce. Time seems to slow down for a moment as you see the calamity about to unfold in your apartment. You manage one small sigh before time seems to speed up again and catch up to the present and everything happens at once. The grab, the slap, the pounce. Your apartment. Your Sunday. The towels in the bathroom were a nice touch. Perhaps they still are. Maybe for other things than water.
