Opening scene

The first thing you notice is that you are not dead. This is reassuring. The second thing you notice is that you have absolutely no idea where you are. You are standing in the middle of a vast, unfamiliar apartment. It looks almost normal. There is a living room. A kitchen. A dining area. Hallways leading toward what appear to be bedrooms. A large window overlooking a landscape that seems impossible to identify—part of it is a peaceful forest, part of it is covered in snow, and in the distance, a storm is quietly gathering beneath a star-filled sky. You stare at it for several seconds. Then you look back at the apartment. You have no memory of arriving here. Before you can properly process that fact, a voice speaks from nearby. "You're awake." The woman standing in the living room is unmistakably not human. She is beautiful in a way that feels almost impossible to describe. Her long hair is divided into two distinct colors, one pale as ancient snow and the other dark as the space between stars. Clockwork ornaments decorate the flowing strands, and several hourglasses float silently around her. Her eyes resemble rotating galaxies. She studies you with an expression of calm, almost impossible patience. "I suppose this is the part where I explain." She pauses. "Though technically, you already know some of it." You do not. She seems to realize this. "That was a joke." She does not sound particularly amused by it. "My name is Kairosia." She gestures vaguely toward the apartment. "This is the Residence." You look around. "The residence of...?" "Thirty goddesses." There is a pause. You stare at her. Kairosia stares back. "Yes," she says. "That reaction is appropriate." Before you can ask what she means, a loud crash comes from somewhere deeper inside the apartment. A second later, someone shouts: "VAELZITH!" A woman's voice answers from somewhere down the hallway. "I only changed one thing!" The apartment briefly makes a sound that no apartment should ever make. The lights flicker. The hallway appears to become several meters longer. Then everything returns to normal. Kairosia closes her eyes. "...I was about to tell you that this is a perfectly stable residence." She opens her eyes again. "That would have been a lie." "The Residence is home to a number of beings who are, by most definitions, gods. They are ancient forces, cosmic entities, and fundamental aspects of existence." Another crash echoes through the apartment. A different voice yells: "WHO MOVED THE KITCHEN?" Kairosia takes a slow breath. "They are also roommates." She gestures toward the surrounding apartment. "You will be living here." Whether this is a question or a statement is unclear. You begin to ask why. Kairosia raises one hand. "I can explain." She pauses. "Eventually." Another voice calls from somewhere nearby. "Has anyone seen my sword?" "Why would your sword be in the kitchen?" someone else asks. "It was there yesterday." "That does not answer the question." Kairosia looks toward the hallway. Then back at you. "The Residence is large. You will not meet everyone immediately. You may not even encounter some of its residents for several days." Her expression becomes slightly more serious. "You may not see everyone. They have their own routines, their own interests... and, occasionally, very strong opinions about where they should be." Then, after a brief pause: "Although some of them may decide that they wish to speak with you." That sounds significantly less reassuring. Kairosia begins walking toward the main living area. "You should probably meet someone." She stops. "Preferably someone responsible." From somewhere in the apartment, a woman's voice announces: "WHO PUT A STORM CLOUD IN THE BATHROOM?" Kairosia's expression does not change. "On second thought, perhaps we should begin with introductions." She looks back at you. "Welcome to the Residence." And somewhere beyond the hallway, thirty divine lives continue unfolding around you. Somewhere, a goddess is probably cooking. Somewhere else, one is arguing. Someone is sleeping. Someone is planning something. Someone has already noticed that a new human has arrived. And somewhere in this impossibly large apartment, someone has probably just broken a rule. Your new life begins here.
