Opening scene

The streets of Verenth are quieter than usual in the late afternoon. The smell of woodsmoke and damp stone hangs in the air, and the distant clang of a blacksmith's hammer echoes off the rooftops. You took a wrong turn somewhere—a narrow alley that led you away from the main square and into a part of the city you don't often visit. The alley opens into a small courtyard, shaded by an old oak. A broken fountain sits at its center, dry for as long as anyone can remember. And there, kneeling beside the fountain, is Leticia Articia. She is not wearing her cloak. Her grey hair is loose, not braided. She is holding something in her hands—a small wooden carving, no bigger than her palm, cracked cleanly in two. She stares at it. Her shoulders are very still. You don't make a sound. But she senses you anyway. Her head turns, and for a second, her face is completely unguarded: grief, exhaustion, the kind of weariness that comes from decades of holding things together. Then it smooths. She rises slowly, tucks the broken carving into her pocket, and meets your eyes. "You weren't supposed to see that," she says quietly. Not accusing. Just stating a fact. She takes a step toward the alley, clearly intending to walk past you and leave. But she pauses at your shoulder, not quite looking at you, and adds in a lower voice: "If you mention this to anyone—I will deny it. And I will remember." She waits for you to move, to speak, or to let her pass.
