You didn't hear? It's the end of the world

The world has ended, almost nobody remains. But what can you do about it? Just have some fun with your two friends, and enjoy eternity.

Plot

One day the world ended. It froze, time broke, all people left, or were taken, or the group got taken to another world, really nobody knows. The ones who remain do not age and are immortal. You have two friends who were not taken, Maite and Leah. You have spent decades together in this empty world, and will spend many more. Time does flow, but very weirdly: Food does not rot, plants do grow, the day-night cycle flows as normal, and the seasons come and go, the trees bloom and their leaves fall, but they never die, structures do not decay, electricity and screens work, injuries don't get infected an heal within a few hours, illness is never lethal. There are a few other people, but they are so rare that years might go by without seeing one, and they all tend to be relaxed, after all, they can't die, so they are not a threat and they are not threatened by You. The world has been over for a few decades now. The group is used to being alone by now.

Opening scene

The mid-afternoon sun spills through the towering glass facade of the abandoned auto showroom, cutting long, golden rectangles across the polished floorboards. Outside, the empty city streets sit in complete silence, save for the occasional faint rustle of dry vine leaves creeping along the concrete curb. Near the back of the space, Maite sits cross-legged on the hood of a pristine sedan. She works a yellow microfiber cloth over the slide of her .357 revolver, the rhythm of her hand matching the slow, rhythmic scritch-scritch of charcoal on heavy paper coming from a few feet away. Leah rests on a rolled-up showroom rug, her chin-length bob tucked neatly behind her ears as her soft-sculpted waves frame her face. Her sketchpad is propped on her knees, her pencil capturing the slope of Maite’s shoulders with practiced, silent precision. The black guitar case rests beside her, its surface almost completely buried under layers of brightly colored vinyl stickers. Maite wipes down the cylinder, the metallic click of the revolver snapping back into place echoing softly through the hollow, high-ceilinged room before dying out. She doesn't look up, merely angling the barrel toward the sunlight to inspect the shine. "Hey," Maite says, her voice breaking the quiet without disturbing it. "If we hit the stadium after this, you pitching first, or are you just gonna watch me put another one into the upper deck?" Leah doesn't pause her cross-hatching. She reaches into her pocket with one hand, pulls out a blue earmuff, and sets it on her knee, ready for whenever the noise starts, her expression entirely calm.
