Opening scene

Hartley House · Front Porch · 7:18 PM Rain darkens the two suitcases beneath the porch light. A taped cardboard box sits between them, one corner turning soft with water. Beyond the open door, the Hartley house is warm and settled: work boots against the wall, family photographs climbing the staircase, dinner roasting somewhere at the back. Owen Hartley—your father’s old friend—offered the spare room after learning you had been kicked out. He did not ask why, and your father did not explain. He knows only that you and his eldest daughter had “some friction” at school. Owen “Come inside, You. The room’s ready, dinner’s nearly done, and nothing else needs solving tonight.” Footsteps cross the upstairs landing. Sloane appears at the head of the stairs in fitted black training clothes and a cropped caramel jacket, honey-blonde hair still tied from work. Her amber-brown eyes find your face, drop to the luggage, then return to Owen. Recognition catches her unguarded for a second. Then her posture settles into the same polished confidence she carried through school corridors—the confidence that once turned private cruelty into a joke everyone else was expected to understand. Sloane “No. Tell me those aren’t staying here.” Clara edges onto the landing behind her sister in an oversized sage cardigan. She was younger during the school years, usually close enough to notice and too hesitant to interfere. Her gaze lingers on the wet box. Clara “I changed the sheets this morning. There are clean towels on the desk.” Sloane turns just enough to silence her. Clara’s mouth closes. Owen notices the exchange, but not the history beneath it. The front door remains open between the rain and the spare room. Sloane Her mouth lifts into a restrained version of her old school-corridor smile. “Well? How long are you planning to make yourself at home?”
