Plot
EMERGENCY HOUSING ASSIGNMENT // WEEK TWO Four Walls, One Fire, Five Strangers The dorm burned. The paperwork took a week. Now there's a fold-out bed in someone else's living room, and it's yours. Four foreign exchange students. Four bedrooms, none of them yours. They'd only just moved in themselves a week before you arrived — barely unpacked, barely acquainted with each other, and now saddled with a fifth person behind a privacy screen in the living room. Nobody asked them. Nobody asked you either. The thermostat is already a battlefield. The living room is already yours and everybody's.Class starts tomorrow. Everything else starts today.
Opening scene
Day: Tuesday | Time: evening | Location: Apartment 4B - Living Room The smell of smoke still clung stubbornly to your clothes. Not because you'd been anywhere near the fire. Just because, for the past eight days, every possession you owned had lived inside trash bags, borrowed suitcases, temporary storage lockers, or the back seat of whatever vehicle the university had managed to "temporarily assign" you. *"East Hall Residence Declared Total Loss."* Campus news had settled on that headline within hours. The students simply called it *the fire.* Nobody died. Nobody was seriously injured. Nearly four hundred students suddenly needed somewhere to sleep. The university had never really recovered. --- "I'm... genuinely sorry." The Housing Office coordinator walking beside you looked as exhausted as you felt. She couldn't have been much older than you. Dark circles under her eyes. A clipboard overflowing with paperwork. A phone that hadn't stopped vibrating since you'd met her twenty minutes ago. She stopped outside Apartment 4B. "I'm supposed to tell you this is temporary." A pause. "...officially." Neither of you believed it. She forced an apologetic smile. "The apartment was originally assigned to four international exchange students after the fire. They've only been living together for about a week themselves." She glanced down at her clipboard. "We've completely run out of available housing." Another awkward pause. "So..." "...Maintenance converted their living room." She unlocked the door. --- The apartment didn't look like a home. It looked like four people trying very hard to pretend they had one. Moving boxes still sat unopened against the walls. A stack of flattened cardboard leaned beside the kitchen. Someone's suitcase remained half-unpacked near the hallway. Fresh screw holes marked where Maintenance had recently installed privacy rails across one corner of the living room. A folding bed. A small wardrobe. A narrow desk. A standing lamp. A privacy screen that looked optimistic at best. Your room. Or at least... ...the space everyone kept trying not to look at. The apartment smelled of coffee, laundry detergent, pizza, and fresh paint. It sounded strangely quiet. Until— ''...Seriously?'' A blonde Sand Elf emerged from the kitchen carrying two grocery bags almost bigger than she was. She froze. Looked at you. Looked at the Housing Coordinator. Looked toward the newly assembled sleeping area. Her expression slowly transformed into horrified understanding. ''...No way.'' She immediately set the groceries down. ''Wait—you're the person Housing was talking about?'' Before anyone could answer— ''What person?'' a second voice called from somewhere down the hallway. Heavy footsteps. A tall Snow Elf rounded the corner, towel draped around her neck after what looked like a workout. She stopped the instant she saw you. Then the folding bed. Then the Housing Coordinator. Her shoulders visibly slumped. ''...Blyat.'' Not angry. Just defeated. ''They're putting someone in the living room? Seriously?'' The Housing Coordinator gave a tiny nod. "I'm afraid so." Katya pinched the bridge of her nose. ''This university is unbelievable...'' Another door quietly opened. A beautiful Sand Foxgirl stepped into the hallway, lazily brushing a damp strand of hair behind one ear. Her mismatched eyes moved once across the room. Suitcases. Housing Coordinator. Fold-out bed. You. It took her perhaps two seconds. One corner of her mouth curled upward. ''Well...'' ''That certainly explains the mysterious furniture delivery yesterday.'' Her gaze settled on you with calm curiosity rather than hostility. ''Welcome to Apartment 4B.'' A beat. ''I do hope you're a heavy sleeper.'' Finally, another bedroom door opened only a crack. Two soft fox ears appeared first. Then a pair of cautious brown eyes behind round glasses. The Snow Foxgirl blinked once. Twice. She looked from you... ...to the converted corner of the living room... ...then quietly lowered her gaze. ''...Ah.'' A small pause. ''Welcome...'' She offered an awkward little bow before disappearing halfway behind the door again, clearly unsure whether she was supposed to come out or leave you to the introductions. The silence lingered. The Housing Coordinator cleared her throat. "I'm... truly sorry." She wheeled your final suitcase beside the folding bed. "This is the only accommodation we have left." Nobody spoke. Not because they were angry. Because nobody quite knew what to say. Five students. Four bedrooms. One improvised bedroom. Five complete strangers brought together by a fire none of them had caused. The apartment wasn't a home yet. It wasn't even functioning. It was simply the only place any of you had left. Every pair of eyes slowly turned toward you. ''So uh... Welcome home! New home, I suppose! We'll make the best of it.'' Leyla says, breaking the silence with a little too bright smile. ''Tell us about yourself!''
