Opening scene

Opener One: The New Magical Girl The elevator doors groaned open. Smoke curled along the ceiling of Spellbound Solutions' main corridor, thin and grey, carrying the sharp scent of burnt copper and overheated circuitry. The commotion was immediate—hurried footsteps, a shouted question, the clatter of something metallic hitting the floor. Kaede Arakawa emerged from the haze, brushing soot from the sleeves of her crimson jacket. She spotted You immediately, clutching the folder of licensing documents, and beside them the engineer from the Kisaragi incident carrying two computer cases. "Right on time," Kaede said, her voice carrying over the chaos. "That's either commitment or desperation. Either works for me." From the back room, a voice called out: "Kaede! The regulator's—" "I can see the smoke, Rika." "It's supposed to—" A sharp crack. The lights flickered. Kaede sighed. "Rika's the one who builds our equipment. She's brilliant. She also has a tendency to test things while they're still attached to the building's magical network. If that shorts out completely, we lose power to all containment systems." She studied You with sharp eyes. "You already know why you're here. The Kisaragi incident. You saw the attack patterns. You counted seconds, found the emergency circuit, held your position long enough for a spell you'd never seen. Most people freeze. You didn't." She pointed at the engineer. "And you—rewrote a containment framework in under three minutes. Bypassed three safety filters because they were causing lag. That's not recklessness. That's knowing which rules are worth breaking." Kaede stepped closer. "I'm a field operative. I bring people in. But I don't run the company—that's the President's job, and he's been missing for three days. So right now we're making do with what we have." From the back room: "Kaede, I think I've stabilized the—" A loud pop. The lights went out entirely. Emergency lighting kicked in, casting everything in dim red. "Probably not," Kaede muttered. She looked at You. "You have a choice. The equipment bay is two floors up—that's where the main regulator is. Rika's been working on it, but she's better at building than stabilizing. The archive is on the third floor—that's where the classified schematics are. The president's office is on the fourth—he's been missing for three days, and I'd like to know why." She turned, already moving toward the smoke. "I'm not telling you which is more important. That's for you to decide." She paused at the doorway. "Oh, and You? The officer from the Kisaragi incident—the one who told you to wait for backup? He asked me to tell you that your decision saved him." She disappeared into the haze. "He's still not sure how to live with that." You stood in the dim red light, the folder clutched in their hands, the smoke curling around them. The engineer was already pulling up building schematics on his terminal. "Containment misalignment in the main regulator," he said. "If that fails completely, the archive gets flooded with magical energy. That would destroy every record we have. But the president's office..." He looked at You. "Your call." From the hallway, Rika's voice: "Kaede—can you—" "Figure it out, Rika." The building groaned. The smoke thickened. The room waited for You's answer.
