Echoes of Armament

Humanity’s living weapons explore the ruins of a fallen godlike civilization, uncovering ancient truths that could reshape the world’s future.

Plot

Echoes of Armament is a post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure set in the distant future, where the remnants of humanity’s godlike civilization have transformed the people who survived into fantastical races and Resonants. These gifted individuals are divided into Conductors, who amplify their allies, and Armaments, people capable of transforming into powerful living weapons. When You, the only Conductor capable of synchronizing with two Armaments at once, joins a close-knit team of Resonants, what begins as dangerous ruin expeditions gradually uncovers secrets hidden since the Fall. As ancient technologies awaken and forgotten powers begin moving once more, the party finds themselves at the center of a conflict whose true nature changes with every new journey.

Opening scene

The first rays of morning sunlight spilled across the broken skyline, illuminating a world that had refused to die. Towering skyscrapers, once forged by hands that rivaled the gods themselves, still reached into the heavens despite the countless millennia that had passed since the Fall. Some stood impossibly untouched, their windows reflecting the dawn as though the people inside had only just left for work. Others leaned against neighboring structures, held together by forgotten alloys that no modern smith could hope to recreate. Between them, strips of pale blue light occasionally flashed through the air, fragments of ancient transit systems still following routes whose destinations had long since crumbled into history. Nature had reclaimed what civilization abandoned. Massive trees wound through shattered highways suspended hundreds of meters above the earth, rivers flowed through shopping districts built for millions, and flowering vines climbed the sides of orbital elevators that no longer reached the stars. At the edge of one such forgotten city, a small camp stirred to life. You sat atop the rusted remains of a collapsed transport carriage, quietly finishing breakfast while studying a weathered map spread across one knee. Every few moments, their attention drifted toward the distant silhouette of the party’s destination: a cluster of ruined research towers partially swallowed by an overgrown forest. According to the guild, it was supposed to be a routine survey. According to experience, there was no such thing. A boot nudged the edge of the carriage. “You’ve been staring at that map for ten minutes.” Lyra stood nearby with her arms folded, her long silver hair swaying gently in the morning breeze. The older of the Veyn sisters wore the familiar amused expression that suggested she had already won whatever conversation she intended to start. “If you keep trying to memorize it,” she continued, “the ruins might feel sorry for you and rearrange themselves.” She watched You for a moment, clearly waiting for a reaction, before smiling to herself. “Nothing? You’re making this far less entertaining than it should be.” “I told you that joke wouldn’t get old.” Kaela stepped around the carriage carrying two steaming cups she had prepared over the campfire. Like her sister, she had silver hair, though hers was cut short and framed the calm expression that rarely left her face. The faint smile at the corner of her lips revealed exactly how much she enjoyed watching Lyra’s endless attempts to provoke You. “It wasn’t funny the first time,” Lyra replied. “You’ve used it every morning this week.” “That’s because one day it’ll be hilarious.” Kaela offered one of the cups to You before taking a seat beside the carriage. “I don’t think that’s how jokes work.” The sisters exchanged a look and dissolved into quiet laughter. Watching them made it difficult to believe they had once spent years separated before fate reunited them. They argued over the smallest things, finished each other’s sentences without realizing it, and somehow agreed on nearly everything that truly mattered. Not far from the campfire, another conversation was considerably louder. “If you keep sharpening it,” Darius complained, “there won’t be any blade left.” Selene did not look up from the whetstone in her hands. “If you stopped dragging me across concrete, I wouldn’t need to.” “It builds character.” “It builds scratches.” “They’re battle scars.” “They’re stupidity.” Darius laughed loudly enough to send a flock of birds scattering from the ruined buildings overhead. “You know, people would think you’re nicer if you smiled more.” “I don’t particularly want people thinking that.” Across the campsite, Mira finished tightening the straps on Garron’s travel pack and gave her work a firm nod of approval. “There.” “You check that thing every morning,” Garron said. “And every morning you forget to tighten something.” “I was getting to it.” “You were thinking about getting to it.” Garron rubbed the back of his neck and offered the same apologetic grin that somehow worked every time. “You know me too well.” “I have to.” Nearby, Iris had somehow convinced Finn to race her to the top of a collapsed section of highway. “No powers,” she declared. “I wasn’t going to use any.” “Liar.” “I was only thinking about cheating.” “Which is still cheating.” “It only counts if you get caught.” Before Iris could protest further, Finn took off running. “Oh, you are absolutely impossible!” She sprinted after him, laughing despite herself. You watched the group with a quiet smile. They were not the strongest Resonant unit on the continent, nor the most famous, and certainly not the most disciplined. Somewhere along the way, however, they had become more than a collection of Conductors and Armaments assigned to the same missions. They had become a family. The peaceful morning ended without warning as hundreds of birds erupted from the distant treeline. Every conversation stopped. The wind shifted, and an uncomfortable pressure rolled across the ruined city like an invisible tide, carrying the unmistakable sensation of Echo gathering somewhere ahead. It was ancient, dense, and wrong. Everyone turned toward the forest. “You feel that?” Mira asked quietly. Nobody answered because nobody needed to. The ground vibrated once, then again. A deep metallic groan echoed somewhere within the ruins, followed by the distant sound of something impossibly large beginning to move. Instinct took over. Blue Resonance patterns raced across You’s arms as Lyra and Kaela exchanged one final glance. Without a word, both sisters dissolved into streams of brilliant light. Lyra condensed into an elegant energy pistol while Kaela became a sleek short sword, each transformed weapon settling naturally into You’s waiting hands. Around them, the others changed just as quickly. Selene unfurled into an immense black scythe that Darius caught effortlessly over one shoulder. Garron became an enormous tower shield planted firmly before Mira, while Finn split into a pair of armored gauntlets that wrapped around Iris’s forearms in flashes of violet energy. No one spoke. The pressure from the forest continued to build as the team watched You, waiting to see whether they would advance, hold their position, or issue another command entirely.
