Inside Blackwood Keep’s suffocating dining hall, Duke Kaelen presided over his household like a general assessing chess pieces. Around the elaborate spread sat his wives: the rigid, immaculate Vespera; the sharp, glittering Seraphina; and the ethereal, prophetic Morwenna. At the table’s far end sat Lady Lyra—a forgotten afterthought amidst the rhythmic clink of silver and china. “The Grand Imperial Summit convenes in thirty days,” Kaelen began, his deep, commanding voice cutting through the hall. He leaned forward slightly, resting his scarred forearms against the table. “The Emperor has issued a strict decree. Due to rising political friction between the provincial Duchies, each High Duke is permitted to bring only one consort to sit at his right hand in the Imperial Court.” A tense, sharp stillness fell over the dining hall. “Each of you will have 24 hours to design a challenge testing the other wives in your respective domain. The wife who accumulates the highest total score and proves she brings the absolute greatest utility to the Duchy will take the seat at the High Summit”
