The Calyx Reclamation

David vs Goliath in space with Tech and Magic. Oppose the growing factory. Decorate your own Star Ship.

Plot

One star. Six worlds. Four corporations that never learned the word enough. Solterra is the only planet in this system that can support life so naturally, it's the one that decided to strip-mine all the others. Rare metals torn out of Vharesh. Fusion fuel skimmed from the storms of Ophidia. An entire ocean draining out of Nyxara's ice. And on Verdance, a living jungle producing something the corporations can't patent, can't replicate, and are quietly terrified of. You've got one ship, and either a head full of scavenged tech or a working knowledge of the Magic they can't buy, that's enough to make yourself a very expensive problem. Let technology be your weapon or surrender yourself to the magic Solterra refuses to acknowledge. "The factory must grow" That's what they say. But the life on these planets deserves a chance to prosper, do they not? Star: Calyx — a stable yellow-orange star, slightly cooler than Sol, giving the inhabited worlds a permanent late-afternoon quality of light that corporate marketing calls "golden hour, forever" and everyone else just calls home. Solterra (the Earth-like world) The only naturally habitable planet in the system, and the origin point of every corporation now operating in Calyx. Solterra is a study in contrast: gleaming corporate arcologies and orbital shipyards on one hemisphere, and the sprawling, underserved settlements of dock workers, ship crews, and displaced colonists on the other. Solterra doesn't get mined — it gets managed. It's headquarters, courtroom, stock exchange, and recruiting ground all at once. Any corporate executive You has ever had to outmaneuver keeps a residence here. Vharesh (rocky/mineral world) A cracked, tectonically violent planet rich in rare heavy metals — particularly duralite, a dense alloy ore essential for ship hulls and reactor housings. Vharesh's surface is dotted with kilometer-deep strip mines and automated drill-cities that never power down. The native rock-burrowing fauna, the skarrin, are driven deeper and deeper as the crust is hollowed out. Exploited by: Cindral Extraction Group Ophidia (gas giant) A vast banded gas giant harvested for helium-3 and thermovapor, both critical to fusion drives and orbital habitats system-wide. Massive skimmer platforms float permanently in its upper atmosphere, tended by skeleton crews on brutal rotation schedules. Ophidia has no solid surface to speak of — but it does have storms the size of Solterra, and at least one corporation has lost entire skimmer fleets pretending otherwise. Exploited by: Aventine Skyworks Nyxara (ice moon, orbiting Ophidia) A frozen moon whose subsurface ocean is being drained for cryowater — ice so structurally pure it's used in everything from coolant systems to luxury goods on Solterra. Beneath the ice, Nyxara hosts bioluminescent ocean life that has never been formally studied, only harvested. Rumors persist of something old and aware living in the deep water, which the extraction corp has classified and buried. Exploited by: Halcyon Deepwater Concern The Thessaly Belt (asteroid field) A dense asteroid belt between Vharesh and Ophidia, mined for raw ore and volatile ices, and increasingly used as a staging ground for illegal salvage claims, black-market refineries, and corporate proxy skirmishes that never make it into any official report. Whoever controls the Belt's shipping lanes effectively controls trade timing for the whole system. Contested by: Cindral Extraction Group and independent salvage crews (potential allies of You) Verdance (jungle world) A humid, densely overgrown planet whose ecosystem produces aurelin sap — a bioluminescent resin with properties that read as pure superstition to corporate scientists and as living magic to everyone who actually grew up near the groves. Verdance is the spiritual and, if You takes the magic path, literal source of power in this setting. Its indigenous groveskeepers have resisted corporate contracts for decades, at increasing cost. Exploited by: Lumen Vire Botanical

Opening scene

Crash Landing on Verdance Smoke curls up from the console before the alarms even finish screaming. The last thing You remembers clearly is Ophidia's gravity well spitting the ship out wrong, and now green is rushing up too fast through the cracked viewport, canopy after canopy of jungle where a landing strip should be. The impact throws You sideways against the restraints. Metal shrieks somewhere aft. Then, silence, the too-loud kind, full of dripping condensation and ticking hull plating and the distant, unfamiliar calls of something alive out there in the dark green. The cockpit lights flicker, die, flicker back on dim emergency red. Through the spiderwebbed viewport, massive fronds sway against a sky the wrong shade of gold. Somewhere out past the wreck of the hull, a twig snaps, deliberately, like something's testing whether the noise woke anyone up. You's hand finds the harness release. Whatever's out there, sitting still in a broken ship isn't going to be the safer option for long.
