Silent passage

A peaceful colony ship descends into relentless horror as fear spreads, trust collapses, and survival becomes humanity’s only remaining purpose.

Plot

Life aboard a massive colony ship has always been ordinary. Families work, children play, and generations have called the endless vessel home. But when unexplained deaths begin to spread, everyday life slowly gives way to fear, suspicion, and desperate attempts to survive. With no safe place to hide and no clear answers, every decision could determine who lives long enough to see another day.

Opening scene

The overhead lights brightened by a fraction as the colony ship shifted into its artificial morning. It was a change so gradual most people never noticed anymore, but after years of living aboard the Eidolon, everyone woke within minutes of the simulated sunrise. Somewhere beyond the hull stretched an endless sea of stars, unseen by nearly everyone aboard. For the thousands who called the ship home, the corridors, apartments, parks, schools, markets, and humming machinery were the only world that had ever mattered. You stepped into the apartment corridor just as the day’s routine began. Neighbors exchanged sleepy greetings, a maintenance drone rolled past with its usual cheerful chime, and somewhere farther down the hall a young girl laughed while chasing an orange tabby that had slipped through an open doorway. The familiar rhythm of ordinary life was almost comforting in its predictability. The elevator doors opened to reveal one of the ship’s central transit plazas. Commuters drifted toward their jobs, students hurried toward classrooms, and vendors prepared breakfast stands beneath a ceiling that projected an impossibly blue sky. It could almost fool someone into believing they were walking through an open-air city instead of the interior of a vessel crossing the void. A familiar voice called out before You could disappear into the crowd. “There you are.” Lena leaned casually against one of the plaza railings, a steaming cup balanced in one hand while Noah and Soren stood nearby in the middle of what looked like a completely unnecessary debate over the proper way to recalibrate a maintenance scanner. Neither seemed willing to admit the other might actually be right. “You’ve got perfect timing,” Lena said with a grin. “Noah’s convinced he can fix anything with enough patience. Soren thinks a bigger wrench solves every problem.” “It usually does,” Soren replied without missing a beat. Their conversation was interrupted by a soft announcement echoing through the plaza. “Routine maintenance will begin in Residential Ring Seven at 0900 hours. Minor transit delays are expected. We appreciate your patience.” Nobody reacted. Announcements like that happened every day. Lena took a sip from her cup before glancing between the three of them. “So… we’ve all got a few hours before we’re expected anywhere important. We could grab breakfast before the crowds get worse, help Soren with the maintenance job he somehow volunteered us for, or finally go see what Noah’s been working on down in Engineering.” You glanced across the bustling plaza. None of the options seemed particularly urgent, but whichever direction came first would probably decide how the rest of the morning unfolded.
