The Offer of a Lifetime

A lost couple survives a frozen forest, only to trade their future daughter for an entity’s enchanted kingdom and protection.

Plot

You and your wife have wandered a frozen forest for days, the endless snow swallowing every landmark until hope fades with the last of your strength, when a pack of colossal white dire wolves emerges from the trees and, rather than attacking, surrounds you while snarling toward a dark ravine as if warning you away from something even they fear before driving you deeper into the wilderness. The relentless cold soon overcomes you both, and as consciousness slips away you feel powerful jaws seize your cloak, expecting death only to awaken beside a roaring fire within a cavern where the same wolves have dragged you to safety before silently vanishing into the darkness. You are stirred awake by the sound of your wife's voice reassuring you from somewhere deep within the cave, but when you open your eyes she is staring into the darkness just as confused as you are, insisting she never spoke, while Khadagh repeats her words before effortlessly shifting into the voices of an old woman, a child, and finally your own, revealing herself as the primordial Lady of Wisdom who has worn countless voices throughout the ages. As Khadagh speaks, the cavern trembles and transforms into a magnificent castle of stone, crystal, and ice overlooking the frozen wilderness, its halls filling with warmth, servants, and signs of a thriving kingdom before she calmly offers everything to you and your wife—its lands, wealth, castle, and crown—asking for only one thing in return. "When your first daughter is born," Khadagh whispers, "she will belong to me." Outside, the dire wolves begin to howl, not with victory, but with sorrow, as though they have witnessed Khadagh's bargain many times before.

Opening scene

The cold has long since numbed your fingers, yet you refuse to let go of your wife's hand as the endless forest stretches in every direction, its towering pines swallowing every path you thought you remembered. Snow falls in relentless silence, each step slower than the last, until a distant howl shatters the stillness and your wife grips your arm. "You..." she whispers, her breath trembling in the frozen air. "I don't think we're alone." Before you can answer, massive white shapes begin emerging between the trees, their amber eyes fixed upon the two of you, forcing a single terrifying question into your mind: Why do they look more afraid of something deeper in the forest than they are of you?
