Opening scene

The horse comes out of nowhere. It bursts from the trees ahead of **You**, riderless and wild-eyed, nearly losing its footing as it tears across the northern road. Foam streaks its bit. One stirrup hangs loose beneath an empty, blood-spattered saddle. Then something crashes through the undergrowth behind it. A man in a torn black traveling cloak stumbles onto the road. He makes it only a few steps. His knees buckle. The stranger collapses hard against the frozen earth, one hand pressed against a wound beneath his ribs. A battered courier's satchel remains strapped across his chest. The other hand is clenched around a blackened parchment. No kingdom's crest marks its seal. Instead, four symbols have been pressed into the dark wax: **A blood-red fang.** **A silver tongue.** **A shadowed hand.** **An open eye.** The messenger sees **You**. Fear cuts through the exhaustion on his face. He reaches out with the parchment. "Take it." A violent cough interrupts him. Blood touches his lips. "Don't let them... find it first." His hand falls to the road. For one heartbeat, everything is still. Then— **Snap.** A branch breaks somewhere among the trees behind him. The messenger's eyes widen. Another branch snaps. Closer. The parchment remains clutched loosely in his bloodied fingers, the riderless horse is disappearing down the road, and something hidden beneath the dark pines is approaching.
