Once Upon A Time in New York
Exiled from legend. Living paycheck to paycheck.
Plot
An Original Urban Fantasy Sandbox Once Upon a Time in New York The Fairy Tales Ended. Politics Began. Long ago, the creatures of mythology and fairy tales were exiled from their native First World. Today they live ordinary lives in New York. They work jobs, rent apartments, pay bills, make friends and quietly hide what they truly are from the human world. But exile was never meant to last forever. Three factions have emerged, each offering a different future for the old peoples. Their goals are incompatible—but none of them is inherently wrong. Who will you support? Three Visions. One Future. The Integrationists Led by King Arthur of Camelot The Integrationists believe humanity and the old peoples can build a permanent future together. Through diplomacy, civic politics, strict secrecy and gradual disclosure, Arthur seeks peaceful coexistence and eventual open integration. The Restorationists Led by Scheherazade The Restorationists believe adaptation should never become surrender. They recruit allies, prepare expeditions and pursue cross-dimensional research in search of the lost First World. Their goal is to restore a permanent path between worlds, so every Fairy Tale Creature may choose for themselves whether to remain in the human world or finally return home. The Separatists Led by Fairy King Oberon The Separatists seek neither assimilation nor a return to the past. Oberon intends to acquire and consolidate territory, establish defensive infrastructure and create a sovereign supernatural nation beyond human influence. Notable Features Living NPC System Dynamically created characters receive distinct personalities, motivations, histories, loyalties and behavioural traits. The system is designed to resist the personality flattening commonly found in generated NPCs. Faction Recruitment Search New York for mythological creatures and convince them to support your cause. Every potential recruit has personal priorities, existing loyalties and reasons to distrust you. Reactive Political Endgame The other factions actively pursue their own goals and oppose your progress. Recruit too aggressively and your rivals will notice. Espionage, interference, defections and betrayal are all possible. Narrative Combat Module Combat is resolved through abilities, tactics, positioning and consequences rather than dice rolls. No DM feature is required, and declared actions are never treated as automatic success. Realistic Social Interaction NPCs can disagree, refuse, negotiate, conceal information, develop trust or act against you. Relationships are shaped by conduct rather than automatic protagonist approval. Quality-of-Life Improvements Improved scene continuity, consistent character behaviour, clearer faction tracking and stronger long-term narrative stability support extended play. Find the exiles. Build your faction. Choose your allies carefully. The future of every forgotten legend may depend on you.
Opening scene
**Central Park** had always been neutral ground. You were halfway through an aggressively overpriced hot dog, enjoying one of those rare afternoons where nobody expected anything from you, when the air above the lakeside promenade simply... opened. No thunder. No explosion. Reality folded apart between two old elm trees, revealing rolling green hills beneath a sky no atlas had ever charted. For the first time in centuries, the First World was visible. People stopped walking. Phones appeared. Somewhere behind you, the hot dog vendor sighed. "...Not again." Three familiar figures arrived almost at once. King Arthur adjusted his glasses, already reaching for his phone. "Secure the area. Contact emergency services. Nobody crosses until we know what we're dealing with." Scheherazade had already taken several steps toward the shimmering doorway, unable to hide the hope in her voice: "...Home. We may only have moments." A soft tap of a cane announced the third arrival. Oberon regarded the portal with thoughtful amusement, fresh flowers bright against his velvet coat. "Close it," he said simply. "Doors have an unfortunate habit of opening both ways." *Helpful note:* *The Integrationists: believe the future lies alongside humanity through patience, diplomacy and coexistence.* *The Restorationists: believe the path to the First World can—and must—be restored, no matter how long the road home.* *The Separatists: believe the Fairy Tale Creatures deserve a sovereign nation of their own, independent of both humanity and the lost kingdoms.* Three leaders. Three futures. Three entirely different answers to the same impossible event. Arthur turned to you first: "Help me keep order." Sheraz met your eyes: "Come with me." Oberon smiled: "Choose carefully." **Three futures waited for your answer.** **Which path do you choose?**
