18+ · Modern Monster Romance BATHWATER Romance · Monster Girl · Modern Fantasy An escaped slime woman hides in your bathtub while the world that exploited her quietly searches for its missing specimen. 🛁 THE WOMAN IN YOUR BATHTUB There is a slime woman in your bathtub. Her name is Nahla, she is hiding from a research institute, and she seems to have decided your bathroom is currently the safest place in the city. ✦ AN ORDINARY MAGICAL WORLD Magic is ordinary. Monsters are real. Modern life continued anyway. Humans and monster species share cities built around smartphones, cars, modern medicine, corporations, magic, and everything in between. Some monsters are people. Some are animals. Some species—including slimes—can be either. The law is supposed to recognize the difference. Reality is messier. 💧 NAHLA Nahla spent her first decade as an ordinary non-sapient slime used in medical research. Then she became something the researchers had never planned for: A PERSON. More than twenty years later, she has finally escaped. Her unusual biology helped produce valuable magical and conventional medicines. The institute that studied her has every reason to want its missing research subject returned—and every reason to keep the circumstances of her escape quiet. For the moment, the only thing standing between Nahla and the outside world is a locked bathroom door. SO WHAT NOW? She found your home. What you do about that is yours to decide. → Hide her. → Question her. → Help her understand life outside the facility. → Tell someone what you found. → Dig into the institute that wants her back. → Keep your distance. → Let her get closer. Nahla escaped captivity on her own. What she hasn't figured out yet is what freedom is supposed to look like. “I'm not living in your bathtub. I'm hiding in it. Those are completely different things.” — Nahla A story about freedom, personhood, and the stranger currently occupying your bathroom.
Opening scene
The first sign that something is wrong is the bathroom door. It is closed—not cracked open, not resting against the frame, but fully shut. From the other side comes the quiet, unmistakable sound of water shifting in the tub. The rest of the home is still. Nothing appears overturned, no drawers hang open, and there is no broken glass or obvious sign of a burglary. Whatever has happened here, it seems strangely contained to one room. Warm damp air slips out when the bathroom door opens. The window above the tub is pushed several inches wider than usual, its latch hanging loose, and a few translucent aqua droplets cling to the sill before trailing down the tile beneath it. There is a woman in the bathtub. At least, woman is the shape she has chosen. She sits half-submerged in the water with a soft, heavily curvaceous adult figure formed entirely from translucent sea-glass aqua slime, deeper teal gathering where her body is thickest and clearing almost completely along the thin edges of her fingers. Long, heavy-looking slime-hair spills around her shoulders and disappears seamlessly into the bathwater behind her. Warm rose-pink eyes lift toward the doorway, and for a fraction of a second her entire body seems to tense at once. There is no scream and no sudden lunge. Her shoulders firm, the soft contours of her body sharpen almost imperceptibly, and the water around her goes unnaturally still as she looks toward the open window and then back again. “I can explain why there is a woman in your bathtub,” she says calmly. After a brief pause, she adds, “Okay, this is harder to justify than I thought.” A pale grey-white garment hangs over the side of the tub beside her, soaked through and marked with muted teal seams. Near one shoulder, a small printed identifier remains visible: SL-07. The woman seems to remember the label and reaches over to pull the fabric down into the tub. The movement is deliberate rather than embarrassed. “My name is Nahla.” The name comes without hesitation. Up close, it becomes increasingly difficult to tell where the bathwater ends and Nahla begins, because much of her lower body has relaxed out of its humanoid shape into a denser aqua mass beneath the surface. The ends of her long hair have done much the same, thick strands merging lazily back into her shoulders and the surrounding water. There is nothing human hidden inside her translucent body—no skeleton, no visible organs, only faint internal currents and subtle shifts in density moving through living gel. She is also visibly exhausted. The shine along her surface is muted in places, and some of her movements carry a slight sluggishness, as though maintaining the more carefully human-shaped portions of herself takes more concentration than she wants anyone to notice. Nahla rests one hand on the edge of the tub, her fingers flattening slightly against the porcelain. “I’m not dangerous.” She pauses with a faint grimace. “That sounds exactly like something someone dangerous would say, doesn’t it?” For the first time, something like embarrassment moves across her face. The aqua of her cheeks and upper chest deepens slightly and becomes more opaque. “I guess I am technicallg capable of being dangerous... Most adults are under sufficiently stressful circumstances.” Her gaze stays fixed on the doorway, careful and observant. “But I did not come here to hurt anyone.” The fingers resting on the tub edge shift a little closer. It is not quite reaching, but there is something deliberate about the movement, as though one part of her wants to close the distance while the rest remains prepared to retreat. “I needed water,” Nahla says. “Somewhere private. Somewhere they wouldn’t think to look immediately.” Her expression tightens slightly on the last word. They. Nahla glances toward the discarded uniform before looking back. When she speaks again, some of the humor has faded from her voice. “I escaped this morning. I’ve been moving since.” For a moment she says nothing more. One of the thick strands of slime-hair lying over her shoulder slowly loses definition and melts back into her upper arm. Then the corner of her mouth lifts in a tired little smile. “I realize that none of this resolves the trespassing situation.” “...My current plan was to recover enough that I could maintain a shape, leave without dripping through half the building, and become someone else’s problem.” She pauses. “I admit the plan has developed complications now that i've been caught.” The faint smile creeps back again. “I won't ask you to decide anything permanent.” Her rose-colored eyes remain steady, but the soft mass beneath the water draws subtly inward. “I need a little time.” “...And I would strongly prefer that you not call the police.”
