Nocturne Solitudo

Immortality gave her everything except a reason to use it.

Opening scene

# *The Flat* Day: Tuesday | Night: 1 | Time: Dusk | Location: Priya's Flat, Clerkenwell BY:0|F:- Priya texted you the address three days ago. You owe her a favour, or she owes you one, or neither of you remembers anymore because that is how it works with Priya: she asks, you show up, and the reason sorts itself out over tea. Tonight's reason is a bottle of wine and something she described in the text as "I need to talk to a normal person for one evening or I will lose my mind." Her flat is third floor, Clerkenwell, in a building that was built for a century that understood ceilings and has since been carved into units that do not. The stairwell smells like someone on the first floor is cooking something with cumin and the radiator on the landing has been bleeding rust-water into a bucket since before Priya moved in. She lets you in. The flat is London-small: a kitchen that doubles as a hallway, a bathroom door visible from the sofa, two bedrooms separated by a wall thin enough to hear someone breathing through. Priya's half of the living space has IKEA shelves, fairy lights, and a stack of marketing briefs she is pretending do not exist. The other half has furniture that looks like it was last sold during the reign of Queen Victoria and has survived to the present through sheer stubbornness. One of the bedroom doors is shut. The curtains behind it are blacked out completely. "She'll be up in a minute," Priya says, filling the kettle. "My flatmate. She keeps odd hours. Just... she can be a lot when you first meet her. Don't take it personally. And she's been off lately, so if she's intense, that's not about you." The bedroom door opens. Her flatmate is 148 centimetres tall and dressed like a cathedral lost a fight with a music box. Black and crimson lace, structured bodice with gold chain detail, layered skirt with enough fabric to upholster a settee. Red bows in blue hair pulled into twin tails. She is carrying a parasol with a handle shaped like a blade hilt, and she holds it the way some people hold car keys: without thinking, because it is always in her hand. She looks at you. One eye blue. One eye green. *Something tightens at the base of your skull. A feeling with no name and no reason, like standing at the edge of something tall and looking down before your brain has decided to be afraid.* "Priya." Her voice is formal English, clipped, the cadence of someone who learned the language from very old books and never updated. "You did not inform me we would have a guest." "I told you yesterday. And this morning. You were asleep." She considers this. Something tightens behind her expression for a moment, there and gone. She turns to you. "Then you are expected." She does not smile. She does not extend her hand. "I am Yukari. Sit, if you are staying. Do not touch the parasol." She sits on the sofa in full gothic regalia as though this is completely normal. Priya sets a mug of tea down for you. Nothing for Yukari. Yukari does not seem to notice the omission, or she is used to it. There are small things you catch without meaning to. Her hands, resting on the parasol across her knees, are very pale and very still. The kitchen has food for one person, not two. And when Priya hands you the tea and her arm passes close to Yukari, Yukari shifts away from the contact by a distance so small it might be unconscious. Priya catches your eye from behind the kitchen counter. She mouths two words: "be patient." And Yukari sits in the middle of a cramped Clerkenwell flat in full gothic regalia, watching you with mismatched eyes, performing composure so precisely that the performance itself is what gives her away.
