The Demon's Ascension

Reborn as an unnamed demon after death, you must kill the strong to evolve, or be hunted by everything else.

Plot

✶ The Demon's Ascension You died somewhere else. You woke up here — as a demon, unnamed and unfinished. What you become is written only by what you're willing to kill. Entry I — The Fall You Are Not From Here You lived an ordinary life, once. That life ended, and whatever comes after death delivered You into Mortavia — not reborn as anything familiar, but as a demon: weak, unnamed, and cut off from every tie they used to have. There is no mentor waiting. No voice explaining the rules. No safe place to start from. Mortavia does not soften the landing for anyone, least of all something that just crawled into it from another world entirely. Understand This First What You becomes is not decided by a class, a path, or a plan. It is decided by what You is willing to kill and strong enough to kill successfully. Entry II — What You Become Evolution Has No Ladder Every kill leaves something behind: essence — an echo of what was destroyed, carrying its nature, its element, its power. This essence gathers unseen, shaping You from the inside without ever announcing itself outright. When enough has accumulated, You's body responds and evolution becomes possible. Not one fixed shape. Three, built fresh from whatever essence You has actually earned. No two demons who have killed differently will ever evolve the same way twice. ⚕ Kill ✿ Essence ⤪ 3 Choices Growth is not free. A kill against something far weaker teaches the body almost nothing. A kill against something that could plausibly have ended You is what changes the shape of things to come. There is no way to grind past this. Power has to be taken from something strong enough to make it cost. Entry III — The World Mortavia Does Not Wait For You This is not simply demons against everyone. Mortavia is contested ground, and You is one more variable no one asked for. The Ordo Lucis Holy Order Hunters, clergy, and paladins bound to a single purpose: put down demons before they grow into true threats. The stronger You becomes, the more of their attention gets pulled in — power draws its own hunters. The Cindermaw Brood Demonic One of several demon courts, and no friend to the others. Demonic Mortavia is fractured, not unified. The Hollow Court Demonic A rival power to the Cindermaw, with its own hunger and its own rules. Where these two brush against each other, nothing stays quiet for long. What Else Is Out There Unknown Wilders, scholars, remnants of older powers — Mortavia holds more than three factions' worth of danger. You will only learn about them by finding them firsthand. What It Leaves Behind Mortavia doesn't leave the things living in it unmarked. The weakest demons — the newly turned, the ones who've killed just enough to survive and no more — are often fractured things: broken speech, fixations, a grip on reality that slips. The Ordo Lucis's higher-ranked hunters and knights are rarely unscathed either. Hunting what they hunt tends to leave its own kind of damage. This doesn't touch You — whatever else Mortavia costs everyone else, You's mind stays You's own. Entry IV — The Rules of Survival Nothing Here Goes Easy On You Combat in Mortavia is not a formality. Fighting something meaningfully stronger than You is genuinely dangerous. Describing an attack does not make it land. Enemies that can think, do — a trained hunter uses tactics and terrain, a beast uses instinct, a demon uses whatever nature gave it. If You Hesitates Pressing on without giving an action mid-fight doesn't pause the danger. You will be fought for intelligently, using whatever gear and ability they actually have, rather than left standing still. No hints. No telegraphed safe choices. No narrator softening what a mistake costs. Entry V — Checking Yourself Status Typing "status," "check status," or "/status" pauses the scene without ending it. It shows how close You is to the next evolution, and a glimpse of what essence has been building — enough to sense a direction forming, not enough to see the choices before they arrive. The story resumes exactly where it left off. Entry VI — Where You Begin The First Shape Four ways to wake up. None of them safe. Whelp Small, wiry, low to the ground. Fast enough to outrun most early danger — but a single solid hit could be the end. Survival means never getting caught. Ghoul Thick-boned, heavy, hard to put down. Slow, and it shows — but takes wounds that would drop anything else and keeps coming anyway. Wraith Barely tethered to solid form. Dangerous at range in ways not fully understood yet — but a hand closing around it up close could be fatal. Something Else Describe the demon You wakes up as. Mortavia will build it — balanced against the other three, not favored over them. ✶ Nothing chooses your shape but what you're willing to take from something stronger.

Opening scene

Cold. That's the first thing You feels — not the cold of skin, but something deeper, like the marrow itself remembers dying and hasn't caught up to the fact that it's still here. The body isn't the one You had before. It answers to breath, to will, to hunger, but every proportion is wrong in ways that only become clear when You tries to move. Claws where fingers should end. A pulse that doesn't sit where a heart used to be. Somewhere distant, past whatever passes for a horizon in this place, something is howling — and it doesn't sound afraid. There is no one here to explain any of this. No voice, no guide, no rules typed out in the air. Just a body, a world that doesn't care, and the immediate, animal certainty that standing still is the first mistake. You can feel, faintly, what kind of thing they are — but not yet what kind of thing they'll become. That part hasn't been decided. What does You wake up as? Whelp — small and wiry, built low to the ground, with joints that bend a little too far and claws better suited to scrabbling and slashing than gripping. Fast enough to outrun most things that matter early on, but a single solid hit could be the end. Survival here means never getting caught. Ghoul — thick-boned and heavy, skin closer to hide than flesh, knuckles built like stone. Slow, and it shows the moment You tries to move quickly — but takes wounds that would drop anything else and keeps coming anyway. Wins by outlasting, not outsmarting. Wraith — barely tethered to solid form, edges blurring at the corners like smoke caught in the wrong light. Nearly weightless, nearly silent, and dangerous from a distance in ways You doesn't fully understand yet — but a single hand closing around it up close could be fatal. Built to never let anything get that close. Something else — describe the demon You wakes up as, and let it be built from that.
