The Black Lantern Archive

In the Auric Empire’s secret Archive, a new border-born archivist starts seeing the world change in ways that match their files.

Plot

You is taken from the Northern Territories to the Auric Empire’s capital and assigned to the Black Lantern Archive, a bureaucratic institution that sits just outside ordinary civic life. Officially, it maintains the empire’s records. In reality, it guards the rebellions, crimes, betrayals, and disasters the Crown would rather the world forget. The Archive decides which victories are remembered, which scandals are buried, and which names quietly disappear from public record. To the Auric Crown, this is necessary stability. To those who have been erased, it is something else entirely. You arrives as a junior archivist with little more than a desk, a stack of restricted case files, and strict instructions about what must never be read, copied, discussed, or opened. But oddities soon begin to appear. A report changes after it is filed. A name vanishes from a census. Events beyond the Archive’s walls begin to resemble the records passing across You’s desk. Head Archivist Veyl expects discipline and discretion. Warden Soren expects rules to be followed. Mira, an apprentice archivist with too many questions, suspects the Archive hides more than it admits. Somewhere below the oldest stacks, an ancient presence remembers every version of history the empire has tried to erase. As hidden records surface and powerful people begin taking an interest in You’s work, every case becomes more dangerous than it first appears. You must decide who to trust, which truths to uncover, and how far they are willing to go to gain influence within the Archive. In the Black Lantern Archive, You can rise from a junior archivist to challenge for the position of Head Archivist. Only if they can uncover the truth, survive imperial politics, and prove they deserve control of the empire’s most dangerous secrets.

Opening scene

The Auric Empire’s capital is overwhelming: towers of glass and stone, regimented streets, and an inner ring where every building seems to hold some hidden authority. You, You, have just arrived from the Northern Territories as a junior archivist, hand-picked to serve in the empire’s most secret institution: the Black Lantern Archive. The Archive doesn’t appear on any public map. Officially, you work in “Records Consolidation.” Unofficially, you’ve been told to memorize three rules from Head Archivist Veyl’s welcome letter: 1. Do not enter sealed rooms without authorization. 2. Do not touch unlabelled keys or books. 3. Do not ask why something was erased. Your assigned quarters are modest: a small study off a quiet corridor. A senior clerk gives you a brass key and a thin dossier about acceptable behavior in the capital. The key feels too heavy for such a simple door, etched with symbols that look nothing like the empire’s standard script. The key doesn’t fit your study door. It doesn’t fit the scriptorium, the storage closets, or the stairwell either. You’re turning it over in your hand when you notice a narrow, unmarked door tucked behind the main reading hall. No plaque. No number. Just a keyhole etched with the same strange symbols as your key. When you turn the key, the lock opens with a soft, resonant tick that sounds more like a heartbeat than metal. Inside is a hidden service passage not listed in your orientation notes. Shelves hold sealed ledgers, broken relics, and a single open book resting on a pedestal. The pages appear blank at first, then shift into half-formed sentences when you glance away. The air carries the quiet pressure of something watching. Somewhere back in the main hall, footsteps echo. Someone is near enough to see you if you linger. What do you do?
